Chapter 39 Where should we go?

“I’M SO SORRY, LOVE. There is still no news from your father. I'm already asking his acquaintances where in Guimaras he accompanied his friend who owned a mango farm. No one knows that person over there. Maybe your father just met that man he was talking about.”
“Thank you, Aling Meding. I'm leaving too,” she said with a sad tone. She grabbed Eron’s hand.
"Thank you very much, Aling Meding," Eron said.
Eron and Kulas accompanied Love when she went back to Manila.
“Uncle is really making us worried,” Kulas said. "It was expected though since he couldn’t be bothered to ask whether we’re still alive or whatnot."
Love’s shoulders slumped, she wanted to cry. She hadn't heard from his father in weeks. Even if he doesn't worry about her anymore. She’s doing well anyway. It was more important for her to know if her father was safe wherever he was now. If he was sick or not. Any news about him would be enough for her to not worry about him anymore.
Eron squeezed her hand as he guided her. "Do not worry. You’ll be able to contact Mang Baste soon. Maybe there’s no signal in the province. Or there’s no one with whom he could borrow a cellphone to contact you.
Given the chance, I’m pretty sure he would want to tell you where he is or what was his condition wherever he is right now. Who knows? Maybe he would want you to be with him when he comes back.”
“I hope so. I want my father and me to be together again.”
They dropped Kulas off at the parlor where he used to work. It was his former boss's birthday and he wanted to talk to his former colleagues. They’ll just pick her cousin up later.
"So. Where should we go?” she asked Eron.
"Let me worry about that. You just relax there."
Love had her head down as they drove somewhere. She was really upset. There seemed to be nothing that could make her happy. Will there come a time where she had nothing to worry about? A time where she could have her family whole again and life would be good with them? Those were just simple desires of her heart and yet even that seemed like an impossible thing for her.
"We’re here,” Eron whispered to her.
Love was surprised to see them in front of the School for the Blind where she used to volunteer.
Eron helped her get out of the car and her former students were waiting for her in front of the school building.
"Kids, Ate Love is here," Sister Imelda announced, one of the volunteers who also teaches there.
"Ate Love!" the kids shouted. "We miss you!"
She hugged the children and couldn't stop crying. "I miss you too."
During those times, whenever she was sad, these children were the ones who made her happy, especially when her mother died. And that’s why when she wasn’t able to, she was really sad about it. Teaching blind children was one of the things that made her happy.
"Ate, are you going to teach us again?” asked nine-year-old Stefanie.
“Soon. Ate just needed to finish something important.” He stroked the head of one of the youngest there.
“What? Are you studying hard? Have you learned a lot of things now?”
"Yes!" they answered in chorus.
"Ate, can you tell us a story again?" the kids requested.
"Of course. And I have many new stories for you.”

“THOSE KIDS USED to be shy. Now, they are confident enough. I think they could sing even better than me.
They also haven’t forgotten my stories to them. It’s nice.”
Love just wouldn’t stop talking about her time with the children after their time at the School for the Blind. They are at a restaurant in Makati and later they will pick up Kulas to go to Eron's penthouse and spend the night there.
“Aren't you hungry or tired yet? Your food is getting cold. You haven't had your lunch yet, have you?” Eron asked and put a dish on her plate. "You could get sick, you know."
“Me? Get sick? I’m more than okay. I will never get tired of teaching those kids or telling stories about them. I'm fine, really.”
She felt so free. Eron had left her at the school for a few hours after he received a call from his office. Love was able to act and move normally because no one’s watching her. She missed doing what she usually does. Whenever she’s teaching, she feels like she was useful somehow.
The kids at the school could learn a lot of things there. They can learn music, braille, and computers, while the older ones could learn how to give massages that they can use as their livelihood. She was very much alive in that place.
“You look like you’re so used to teaching kids there,” Eron commented. “I wanted to believe you’re really a certified teacher.”
“My mother used to be a teacher for special children and she also teaches at the School for the Blind before. I used to volunteer there before I had that accident. If my Mom didn’t die and my father didn’t have any debt, I would have finished my degree in Education by now. I’ll be a real teacher.”
She hoped it was not yet too late for her. She only had two years before she completed her education anyway. It was not easy juggling between work and studies. But she would do everything to make her dream come true. She got more inspired in reaching her dreams when she saw the children again.
“I am sure you would have been a great teacher if you finished your degree. Because even now, you’re already a good teacher. The children adore you,” he praised her. “They love you because you also showed them how much they mean to you. Even the teachers there treat you like a family.”
“They were the ones who took me in when my father got into trouble. They gave me the job. So if given the chance, I want to give back to them for everything that they had helped me with. They are good people. And I know, they will be able to help a lot more people in the future, not just the disabled ones but the normal ones as well.”
"Do you want to study again?" Eron asked.
"Of course! I've been dreaming of that for a long time.”
“You must be inspired. Sister Mel said earlier, one of the students who graduated from the School for the
Blind has graduated cum laude at UP. I am sure you can also do that. And I am willing to help.”
She refused immediately. "You don’t have to. You’ve done so much for me already. It was more than enough.
I don’t even know how to pay back what my father and I owe you.”
“You’ve helped me reach my dream, haven't you? Why wouldn’t I do the same for you? Let me help you with your studies. There’s nothing we can do about your eyes. But I can do something for you to help you finish your studies and become a teacher. Will you please let me help you out? ”
"I'll think about it," she said and then turned to her food.
She could not accept his help. He owed him nothing. It was Mitos who she helped out, not Eron.
Where was Mitos anyway? How long would Eron need to pretend? How would she be able to know what happened to the real Mitos? Or does her ex-boyfriend still have a plan to show up again?
When Mitos reappears again, it means that Eron would disappear from her life forever.
Why does it seem like she didn’t want that to happen?
