Chapter 9

Doula left the office closing the door since it was the end of working hours. She put back the tag into the badge and walked away.
“Here is the badge.” She said giving it to the receptionist.
“Alright, you need to sign out.” The receptionist said.
After signing, Doula walked out of the building.
She walked on the street with her handbag while thinking of her uncle's decision.
“After all, I rejected it.” She said to herself. “That's all that matters.”
 Her thought drifted to Kailua.
“I wonder how she is coping?” She said and kept walking on the street.
Minutes later, she got to her house and sighed closing her eyes.
“I should get in, pour out some popcorn for myself and some tea then sit down to watch any movie of my choice.” She said with a sigh. “I will go to uncle's house in the evening.”
With this said Doula opened the door and entered.
“Home, sweet home.” She said looking around.
“It really doesn't feel like home without Kailua.” She said putting off her bag.
Looking around, Doula could only smile as she missed Kailua.
As she had said to herself before, she walked to the cabin and got herself some popcorn and tea. She walked to a couch with them and placed them on a table.
Taking up the TV changer, Doula put on the TV taking it to her favorite channel.
She got up and walked to switch on the air conditioner then walked back to the couch.
She focused her attention on the program being shown.
Minutes later, a knock was heard on the door, and she could not but wonder who it was.
“Maybe Kailua noticed that she can't do without me.” She said to herself getting up.
She happily hopped to the door and opened it just to see a man standing outside.
“How may I help you?” She asked placing her hand on the door.
“Are you Miss Doula?” The young man asked.
 “Yes, I am.” She replied.
The young man held out a book to her.
“I will need you to fill this.” He said.
Doula, who couldn't comprehend what he meant, looked at him.
“What is this for?” She asked.
“Oh, I am sorry.” The guy said taking his hand back. “I came to deliver this to you.”
“I didn't order anything.” She said.
“Yes, you didn't.” The man said opening a card. “It states here from Miss Kailua to Miss Doula.”
“It didn't come with a surname, but it has this address.” The young man said.
Tears fell from Doula's eyes as she signed and was handed the card and a package.
“Thank you.” She said walking into the house.
When she had closed the door, she dropped the package and let loose the tears on her face.
“I really love you, Kailua.” She said.
She opened the card and read the content. She was more sorrowful than before.
Kailua had congratulated her again and told her not to miss her.
“Has my friendship with Kailua ended?” She asked herself.
Making up her mind, she walked to her bag and pulled out her phone. She was going to call Kailua to ask her about the meaning of what she wrote in the card and only then will they be even.
She dialed the new number, but it wasn't answered.
After dialing twice, she hissed and dialed the one she used while staying with her, but it wasn't answered.
“Wow!” She said taking in a deep breath.
Minutes later, her attention was disturbed by a beep on her phone. It was a message.
'Hi, did you get what I sent you? I am sure you love it. ' The message read. ' I am so sorry, I can't answer your call as I am in a meeting. '
Doula smiled as she read the message remembering that her friend had gotten a job before her.
“Take care of yourself.” She wrote and dropped the phone returning her attention to the program.
Hours later, she walked into her room to get her clothes changed.
She had been putting on the dress she wore to the office and didn't bother, but now she had to change into a normal wear.
Ransacking her clothes again, Doula found a picture she had taken with Kailua before they went to high school.
“Kailua!” She called. “Forgive me, I am not going to throw away this picture nor will I burn it. It stays with me, our memories.”
She placed it in a safe place and then kept searching for a suitable cloth.
Some minutes later, she found a cloth and smiled, remembering it was a cloth that Kailua loved seeing her wear.
She got dressed and packed her hair.
“Better!” She said looking at her reflection in the mirror.
Instead of seeing herself, she saw Kailua.
“Kailua!” She called, touching the image she saw in the mirror.
But suddenly, she noticed it was her reflection in the mirror and not Kailua's.
“What is wrong with me?” She asked herself. “When did I begin hallucinating?”
She remembered seeing Kailua's image in the mirror and then hers.
Not worrying, she took up a little bag and her phone. She walked out of her room and took a little fruit wine before leaving the house.
Getting to the roadside, she waved down a vehicle and hopped in.
The journey to her uncle's house was a smooth one but a little bit long as it took the bus thirty minutes to get to his street.
His house was just the third house in the street making it easy for Doula to get there.
Getting to her uncle's house, Doula knocked slightly on the door twice.
The maid walked to open the door for her.
“It's the Miss.” The maid said.
“Uncle, I am here!” Doula said, looking forward to getting a glimpse of her uncle.
Grudgingly, her cousin walked out of his room with his girlfriend and Doula looked on.
 Where is her uncle?
