Chapter 10

When they got to the land, they stepped out of their dinghy and pulled it out of the water. The sand on the shore was smooth and good to lie on.
“If this sand was somewhere in our village I would have wished to have a girl friend” Nazi said to him self smiling as he lied on it faced up. There was an orange sun in the sky already setting in the west. It was mild to the body almost the opposite of what they felt in the sea. However the temperature now was better than that of the sea. So looking back into the sea it was as though the water was endless.
Dylan, Rickie and Mata went up into the forest. If not for the different sounds birds produced the forest was calm. The trees were all tall without branches on the trunk. They looked evergreen and their shades were gentle and relaxing.
“Over here! I find some fruits” Rickie called.
“How come this fruits bearing tree grew in a place like this?” Dylan asked.
“It’s wasting here. No body feed on it if not birds” says Mata.
They planned on getting up. Mata and Rickie climbed while Dylan stayed down to pick the fruits. Rickie was faster in tree and in water which their mother usually say he took after their father in all things. They plugged not up to three fruits then Rickie heard a hissing sounds. He recognized it. He turned slowly, it was an adder. He moved down gradually not knowing that there’s another one coming up to him. He froze, turned to the other branch he discovered that the snake was everywhere. He was filled with fear, but he did not leave the branch. Being smart and lucky he displayed his skilled and got down. but Mata who only heard him shout fell from the tree to the ground. He sustained plenty bruises. The snakes did not stop coming for them so they hurried away. Rickie helped Mata because he couldn’t walk.
Coming back to the shore, Nazi too was not there. He too went to see around. But not too long he returned with crabs. That evening they gathered dried stick and made fire. There they chatted about home, about what to do the next day in the sea and what to do when they get home.
That very night Dylan had a nightmare. Like he noticed humanlike beast pass where they were lying. He looked like a human with a buffalo head. He took a spear, held it up to stab him and that was when he shouted and opened his eyes. He didn’t see anything like that around. It was dark everywhere but he still had the feeling that the beast went a particular direction.
He stood up quietly, snaffled a torch but there he noticed it was dim due to the battery. But that did not discourage him from following the direction he assumed, slowly. He wanted to see if it was a dream or reality. He went further and further still seeing nothing. But he kept believing there’s something ahead of him. He walked until suddenly fire flies appeared from no where and littered the atmosphere and were coming towards him. It was even more frightening than the dream he had. He didn’t believe there were ordinary fire flies so he reversed and took on his heels.
He woke his brothers one by one. He told them his experience and they were all at alert. They didn’t sleep well that night.

Morning sleep was sweeter, they were lying there until sun rise. The first to wake was Nazi, he woke the rest and made them get ready to row. They got their items back I to the dinghy and pushed it into the water and paddled off, heading East wards as the direction they thought leads home.
Not long they sailed, they sighted an object coming towards them but somehow heading Southwest. They wondered what was floating on the water, but gradually they realize it was a canoe. Those were certainly fishermen but until they go closer before they will recognize the faces.
“That looks like big Bond” Nazi squinted with his hand on his forehead, shading his eyes.
They kept wondering until they got very close. And now their faces were clear. It was Zack, his girlfriend Sonia, Bond and another girl. They don’t know her but they assumed she was Bond’s girlfriend. She’s a cute blonde.
“They are just two? Where could Matt be?” Mata asked.
“I am even wondering why they should come with their girlfriends”
“They did not only come to fish. They want to have fun too” Naughty Nazi said giggling.
“In the canoe, in the middle of the sea?”
“They can go off the shore”
They waved to let them know that they were willing to go with them but Zack refused to stop.
“Go your way. Don’t come with us” Bond shouted. But the four brothers kept following and it was as if those they follow were moving faster. There were plants on the surface of the water. Zack paddled into it. Dylan followed but could not explain how they lost them. They went deep into the vegetation hoping to find them but their search was in vain.
“Those guys are smart” Dylan said.
“I can’t believe we lost them here” Mata said.
They were somewhat stranded. Coming out of the vegetation was becoming another problem. That when they realized how far they went.
“Places like this, there should be something beneath” Rickie suggested.
“Yeah. Let’s try and see. It’s better we go with little than nothing” Nazi said.
Mata brought the net and put it in order. He gave the other end to Nazi and they spread it into the water. Shortly after the net became heavy.
“I knew it!” Nazi kept repeating excitedly. The rest drew closer to help pull it out. It was indeed heavy.
“Did you tie any bait on the net?” Dylan asked.
“No, me too I am surprise how they surged in so fast”
“Maybe they thought the net is something eatable. They must be very hungry” Rickie implied.
“So this is where those guys catch those fishes” Dylan confirmed.
“They thought we won’t find out” Mata boasted laughing.
“I will be coming here everyday. If this goes like this every day we come I bet that within a month we will be making plans as the merchants does” Nazi fantasized.
“It is time we pull it out” Says Rickie.
“It’s becoming heavier!” Mata shouted. “Pull harder!”
They pulled it closer and closer and when it was close enough to see what was there a very large crocodile raise it’s head with a wide teeth-filled mouth. They were freaked out. They threw away the net. The terror almost threw some of them into the water if not that the other ones were fast enough to have grabbed them back into the dinghy. The crocodile sunk back.
Rickie quickly made for the spear because he was sure the crocodile would come back and just as he'd anticipated it returned, this time, very aggressive. It was hitting under the dinghy to make it capsize but it wasn’t easy for it because the boys too, as it was a battle for survival they used all they had on it. And when it was calmer they hurried out of the vegetation. The fear made them seek for a dry land for the water entirely became frightening.
“I thought crocodiles inhabit shallow waters not deep seas”
“There are different species of crocodiles. As a matter of fact I’m surprise to see that one too. It looks too big and instead of grey it’s blackish green”
