He looked like he was not yet ready to walk out of her room. He probably didn’t expect that she would throw him out just like that. "W-wait, what about your bucket list…” He pointed at his lips. “The kiss.”
"There is no kiss written on the bucket list," she said.
“Fine. Good night then. I'll just list the kiss here myself. I’ll include your skinny dipping and your sexy dance as well,” he said, grinning as he walked down the hallway.
Her eyes widened. “Hey, Carter! Don't put just anything in there.”
He let out a silly laugh and gave a flying kiss towards her. "Goodnight!"
“ZIP-WIRE or ferry?” Cheska asked while holding the travel brochure. "What's the better way to go to Nami Island?"
They were on the KTX train to Gapyeong Station where they would start their way to Nami Island, an island in the middle of a lake and were the location of some of the famous Korean shows. It was known to be the best place to watch the autumn foliage.
"Let's try the ferry to be safe," Carter said casually.
She rolled her eyes. "Safe is boring."
“Huh! Did you know that it was almost a kilometer away? What if you fall to the lake or your harness got cut off?”
“Ah! You’re scared. You must be scared of tall places or maybe scared of hanging,” she said and snapped her fingers. “So, you have something you fear. You can face gangsters without batting an eye but you’re scared of heights.”
He crossed his arms over his chest and averted his eyes. "I don't have wings."
Cheska pouted. "What a waste. I was actually thinking of trying it out. Because when I used to tour around before, my co-workers never accompanied me to do the zipline. They said they were old and their knees were weak already. Even Doc Darryl didn’t want to the zipline. But it’s okay if you don’t want to either. I’m used to being rejected.”
Carter was silent. She couldn’t do anything anyway if he really didn’t want want to do the zipline. She would just try it some other time. She kept on saying that to herself until they reached Gapyeong Station.
She was walking towards the sign that was pointing in the direction of the ferry when Carter him in the other direction. “Oh! Where are we going?”
"That’s not the right lane.”
"That’s the ferry station.”
“I thought you wanted to take the zip wire.”
“But you don’t want to. You’re not planning on leaving me here to take the ferry to Nami Island, are you?”
He took her hand and squeezed it. “Of course I won't leave you alone. I am coming with you.”
“But aren't you afraid of heights?” she asked.
“Actually, I haven’t tried the zipline yet. I always thought I would faint or that I might fall. But I also used to think that I couldn't be brave when facing gangsters like Park Gung. That I might just run away from them and hide in fear. But I’m still here in Korea, right? I am still not running away from my responsibilities. I guess the zip wire is worth the try.”
"That's brave," she whispered and squeezed his hand as well.
“I can't just say no to you. You know that,” he said and stroked her cheek with his finger.
"Thank you," she whispered.
She had never met a man who would go out of his way just to be with her. Even if he was just her tourist guide, he didn’t have to risk his life just to please her. She really appreciated it.
She smiled secretly. If only Carter could see how her heart somersaulted like an Olympic gold medalist gymnast at the moment.
Cheska was so excited when they finally reached the top of the platform. From there she could see the Cheongpyeong River and up ahead was the crescent shape Nami Island.
She raised both her hands. "It’s beautiful! Very beautiful! Then we will fly over the river. Aren’t you excited too, Carter? ”
She noticed he was not moving from his place. He was looking out at the space in front of him but he seemed like he was not really seeing anything. “D-did you know that Nami Island was formed due to the construction of the Cheongpyeong Dam? It has a half-moon shape and there you could find the tomb of General Nami who led the fight against the rebels for the seventh king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo.”
He looked like he was just a normal tour guide who was just explaining to her pieces of information about their destination. But he was pale and trembling. The breeze was cold at the top of the platform but she thought he was being gripped by fear.
"Do you want to back out?" she asked him. "You look like you’re about to collapse."
He shook his head. “It was just really cold up here. I won’t back out.”
