"We won't put you in jail if you will do two things for us," Cheska said. She was controlling the emotion in her voice. “First, I want to know the truth. Why did you fool me?"
Jaimee swallowed before speaking. “B-because I want to be cool. I mean, look at you. You have a good family. Your life is good. You have a cool friend. And you didn’t care if you’re not cool in the eyes of other people. I have nothing I can be proud of. My father is just a security guard. My mother just has a stall in the market.”
“But you said you owned a grocery store and your family has a business. That you only suffered financially when your textile factory went bankrupt. Is there any truth in you?”
“I-I just thought that if I had a doctor for a cousin in Korea, I-I would be cool. That I won’t look pathetic. That there’s something good about me worthy to talk about.”
"Are you laughing at Cheska while she was going crazy about my handsome looks?” Carter asked angrily.
Jaimee was startled. “I-I didn’t mean to get into deep. Until I saw that you were already in love with Doc Darryl. I-I feel sorry for you too. That’s why I…I just ‘killed’ him so you wouldn't get hurt anymore.”
Cheska couldn’t help herself and she grabbed Jaimee’s arm. “You felt sorry for me? You felt sorry for me when you almost killed me with your lies? Six years I’ve been mourning. I love Doc Darryl so much that I never let myself love someone else after him. I even went to Korea just to see him. And it was all just for nothing.”
"I-it's not my fault if you can't move on."
“Because you don't want me to move on. You always remind me of him. You even guilt trip me when you said your relatives were blaming me that if only he didn’t come to the Philippines to see me, he would still be alive today. And then you asked me for money for treatment for your fake illness, right after you said those things to me. Am I correct?" Jaimee’s lips trembled as fear showed on her face. “You made me look so stupid. I built my world on a person who doesn’t even exist. Is that how to feel sorry for a friend?”
Jaimee lowered down her head. "I am sorry."
She touched Jaimee’s chin and held it up. “Sorry? Is that all you’re gonna say? Up until we showed in front of your house, you have no plans of telling me that Doc Darryl was not real. If I haven’t met Carter on the train when I arrived in Korea, I would be looking for someone who didn’t exist on Jeju Island. Then you will create another excuse and continue to ask money from me.”
"So, what is it that you want? Do you want me to return your money? I'll give it back to you. Just give me time. I don’t have money at the moment. I do not have a job yet. Please don’t throw me in jail.” Jaimee knelt and hugged Cheska. "Have mercy, unnie."
Cheska couldn’t feel even the slightest pity. Jaimee didn’t deserve her pity with all the things she had gone through because of all her lies. And Jaimee herself didn’t even think about her soul that had been eaten by her greed for money.
"Fine. We will not press charges against you but in one condition,” Carter said and pulled out his cellphone. “I want a public apology. A confession. I want you to let everyone know about what you did.”
"B-but it's embarrassing."
"You didn’t feel ashamed when you did something wrong. And when you’re gonna something right, you feel embarrassed? You have one minute to answer or you’ll hear from my lawyer. And even if you are able to go to Korea, I'll make sure you won’t ever be happy either. Cheska has already met my gangster friend. He will not leave you in peace.”
“THERE. MY COUSIN’S VIDEO is already posted on the internet. Hopefully, it will help other people who had been a victim of hers as well. We won’t be pressing any charges, but can’t say the same for the other victims,” said Carter and stacked dishes they used for their dinner. “Why don't you take a rest now? I know you're tired too.”
They were at her condo where they had their dinner after they came back from Bataan. He was staying at a nearby hotel. They left Jaimee after taking a statement from her. She didn’t want to ruin her name. For old time’s sake. But she had to do teach her a lesson to make her stop her wrong ways. But it didn’t make her feel any better.
"Yes. My head hurts," she said, touching her head. She needed that rest.
Carter walked her to her room, but he was a little stunned to see Doc Darryl’s framed pictures. His pictures. “You really love him."
"Immature love," she whispered and leaned against the headboard of her bed. “Now I understand what my friend Mikha had been saying all along. That I'm just in love with the notion that I'm in love. I loved an illusion. I cannot say that I love someone until I see him and have spent time with him. And that is reality. I am sorry, Carter.”
He sat on the side of the bed. "It's not your fault. Maybe it was meant for us to meet on that train so we could find out the truth. So that you didn't have to look for someone who didn't exist. That there really was no Doc Darryl out there. But I'm still here, Cheska. I am the real one.”
She looked at him sadly. "But you hate me."
He took her hand. “I don’t hate you. But you need to know what you feel about me. Who was it that you really like. If I didn't look like Doc Darryl, would you still love me? You can't blame me if I can’t stop thinking that you love him first. And you love him for six years, Cheska.”
“I will prove to you that I love you. That you are the one that I want.”
“You need time for that, Cheska. You need time to heal. To accept the truth. And maybe go out a little to know if you will like someone else who was not as handsome as me.”
She groaned. "Like seriously?"
He didn’t laugh. He touched her cheeks. “I don't want to leave you. I want to fight for you but I want to be fair to you. To both of us. I want you to give yourself some time to change the way you think about the world. So you won’t revolve your world around me the way you did with Doc Darryl.”
She closed her eyes firmly. "You will leave me? How can I survive that? It only took a few days for my feelings for Doc Darryl to get overshadowed by what I feel for you. How will I be able to show you that I love you if you’ll let me go?”
“If we are meant to be together, we will find a way to be together. You need to do this for yourself. So when it's time for us to meet again, you will not have to doubt that it was me that you want to be with.” He kissed her on the forehead. “But it is goodbye for now, Cheska. Until we meet again.”Download Novelah App
