Chapter 42 - Is this my last day? Author's POV Several days had passed. Xi Song was so busy at Relief Camp that he didn't even have time to call Xingyue. On the other hand, Xingyue used to get anxious hearing the news about the earthquake. She was worried about Xi Song every moment. To take care of her, Xia Na even shifted to her place for a few weeks. She gave her time to Xingyue and took care of her. One day, she was sitting on the couch and scrolling on Weibo. Her eyes immediately became wide when she saw an application form to volunteer in the same town as Xi Song. Without even giving a second thought, she filled the form and submitted it. Xia Na was sitting next to her. And when she saw this, she instantly shouted at her. "XINGYUE! Do you even know how scary that place is? It's not an adventurous park. Many people lost their lives there." "Xia Na, isn't it good to volunteer for a relief event? I mean, when they'll see us working like them, they'll be so proud of us." "Yeah, but..." "No! It's decided. We're going. And we're not staying there and disturbing them. We'll volunteer and just see them from a distance, okay?" "I... You left no choice for me." "That's my Xia Na." Pulling her into arms, she embraced her. .......................................... The cloudy sky kept the temperature cooled. Everyone was wearing a red jacket, indicating them as Volunteers. As their bus reached the relief point, all came out and took out supplies. Everyone held a box in their hand and started distributing it among the people there. Passing the food and water bottle, she smiled at them. "There you go." While doing her work, her eyes fell on a small child who went into the dense backwoods. Seeing him alone like this, Xingyue followed him. But after a while, the child disappeared from her gaze. "Little boy? Little boy? Are you there?" Searching around, she went inside the collapsed structure. The earthquake caused the place to shake. But without taking the child out, Xingyue was not ready to leave. Taking a deep breath, she called him aloud. "LITTLE BOY? ARE YOU THERE? ANSWER ME!" Walking inside the place, she kept shouting. Her voice could be heard by someone passing. However, there was no reply to her. ................................................. After not seeing her around, Xia Na went to find her. "XINGYUE! XINGYUE!" She kept calling her name. Thus, there was no reply to her words. While walking around, her gaze met with someone familiar. "Ling Xiao?" "Xia Na? What are you doing here?" He asked with his jaw gaped. "I came along with Xingyue to Volunteer here. But I can't find her now." Her gaze shifted away from his face and followed to a child standing along with him. "Who is this little kid?" "Oh! Xi Song and I heard him crying. Maybe, he lost his way. Just when we found him, I lost Xi Song. I don't know where he goes?" "Same! I don't know where Xingyue goes?" .......................................... Xingyue's POV "ANYONE HERE? CAN YOU HEAR MY VOICE? PLEASE REPLY!" I kept shouting and searching for that kid, although I myself lost the track to go back. As I took a few steps forward, the whole place started shaking as another earthquake appeared. Some broken blocks had fallen off and closed the way to go out. At this moment, I felt like the unluckiest person on the earth. It was the only way to escape, and now, it was closed. I ran my hands through my hair as it started making me feel frustrated. "How am I going to escape? Why is every single difficulty coming in my way?" With my eyes crinkled, I made my way to search another entryway. Slowly, step by step, I moved forward. This place was collapsing, and my one wrong move could take my life away. Even my loud voice could collapse this place anytime. I was stuck inside, terrified if I could see tomorrow or not? My hands and feet were trembling with terror. The fear had taken over my mind. I couldn't stop but imagine scenes of me dying here. I saw Xi Song shedding tears, and his tears fell on my cheeks. I wanted to wipe them off, but I couldn't reach him. He was with me, but he was far away from me as well. I saw Xia Na and Tang Xue breaking down at my funeral. It clenched my heart, even if it was imagination. My mom, who used to argue with me, was also shedding tears. No matter how many times we argued with each other, in the end, we shared the most precious connection. She lost me, her world. I couldn't stand tears in my loved one's eyes. Pushing myself, I almost found a way when a sudden shake made me slip on the ground. I rested my hand on the wall to support my body. But I guess it was too late. I saw a piece of the block cracking apart. It was just above me, and I stood there, horrified. My feet were freezing there. They didn't even bother to move. With my breaths slowly fading, I shouted for the last time and lowered my head. "AGH!!!"
