Chapter 22

Walking up the next morning was exhausting. I haven’t done anything yet but I already feel tired. I wanted to take a rest but I couldn’t skip at work. So, I endured the heaviness in my insides.
After fixing myself, I decided to skip breakfast and go straight to work. But I almost want to jump back on my room when I saw Lucas, seriously looking at me while he was waiting for me outside of my apartment.
I couldn’t move much; I felt my heart beat so fast; I couldn’t stand firm. And hell, I couldn’t even talk!
I looked away to avoid his gaze. I really don’t know what to do, I’m not expecting to see him here. I wanted to think for the meantime, that’s why I’m trying my best to ignore and avoid him. I needed time for myself. I can’t just accept anything that Xavier said. He’s accusing me of something that I am not.
He kept his gaze on me for more than a minute before he walked towards me. I was shock to the point that I stepped back after his move. He tried again but I still step back. Honestly, I am not sure why I am doing that. I just know that I am so nervous and I couldn’t stay long with him.
I saw him clenched his jaw before looking away. I took that as a chance to calm myself that when he looked at me again, I was able to look back at him. Though I can hear my heartbeat so loud because of his presence.
“You might be late for work, let’s go. I’ll give you a ride,” he said in his most serious and low voice.
I shook my head that made him almost frown. Maybe he’s confused with my actions.
“I-I can just take a taxi,” I told him in urgency.
“You’ll be late if you wait of it. Let’s go,” he insisted. I couldn’t disagree because he’s right. I just couldn’t relax; I am nervous and scared he might be mad at me.
We remained in silence during our ride. I am secretly glad that there’s no traffic, it didn’t take us long before reaching the office.
I got shock when he guided me out of his motorcycle. I thanked him and was about to leave him behind to avoid any more confrontation but he managed to get a hold on my wrist.
My heart beat like there’s tomorrow. It was so loud and fast I can feel it almost getting out of my chest.
“Do we have any problem, Veronica?” he asked seriously. My eyes winded and avoid his gaze right away. I almost cursed because I couldn’t calm myself. And damn, I don’t even know why I react this way with his presence.
I shook my head to tell him there’s no problem.
“Let’s talk later. I’ll fetch you up later,” he said trying to calm himself. He stepped forward to close our distance and kissed my forehead, “Please wait for me. Let’s talk about this,” he whispered. I couldn’t say anything and just sighed.
I turned my back on him and didn’t bother looking back. I pushed myself to calm.
As much as I can, I wanted to avoid this. I wanted to ignore them both to figure out my feelings.
Like yesterday, I am spacing out. Rica asked me if I’m okay but I am certain to not tell anyone, anything about this. I just smiled at her and give her assurance. All day, I just remained working even though I keep on spacing out. I wanted to know how to fix this thing but I couldn’t figure out any way to.
“Vy, can we hang out on your place?” Rica asked when we reached the elevator. We’re going home now.
“Yeah, we’ll join too.” Finn agreed.
“In my place?” I asked hesitantly. It’s not because I don’t want them to come, I just wanted to be alone and think.
“Yup, my sister comeback. We had an argument. Let’s bring Finn and Kley so I won’t go home alone later,” Rice said while smiling at me convincingly.
“Yes please? Let’s just drop by on some fast-food or supermarket to buy our foods,” Kley said.
“It’s on us, Vy. We won’t be a pain in your ass for now,” Finn said jokingly.
I remained in silent while thinking about it as we reached the ground floor.
“Oh, you two have plans? I didn’t know so I thought we could hang out,” Rica whispered beside me.
I sighed and remember about Lucas. He’s already waiting for me.
“Hi,” he greeted us.
“Hi,” I greeted back, almost a whisper.
Now, I didn’t know what to do. I really forgot he said he’ll fetch me up. If I remember, I should have allowed them to hang out on my place.
“You guys have plans?” he asked.
“Ah, no. We just planned to hang out on Vy's place but it’s fine. We didn’t know you two have plans already. It’s fine though, we can just hang out on Kley's place,” Rica answered. While I remained standing beside them.
“We gotta go, Vy. Take care of our friend, okay?” Finn said while Kley and Rica just waved at us.
“Do you want to go with them?”
I looked at him after hearing him say that. He still looks serious but I can see how much he’s trying to calm himself, he looked frustrated and worried.
“Do you know his place? I’ll bring you there,” he said. I looked at him again. He just guided me on his ride and put on my helmet. I didn’t say a word and just let him do it.
“I want to go home,” I whispered before he could start his engine.
I heard him sigh before nodded. We were both quiet along the way. When we reached my apartment, I didn’t wait for him to assist or guide me. He just watched me do it for myself then. And when I handed him his helmet, he took a deep breathe.
“Can we talk?” he asked calmly. I don’t know that I would be able to feel this much warm just because he asked me if we could talk.
“Please, Veronica. Let’s talk,” he added while he closed our distance. I didn’t move, I couldn’t. He held out my hand, it was so soft as if he would hurt me if he won’t be careful.
“Are you mad? Why are you avoiding me?” his voice sound like pleading. I could see how much he is frustrated with our situation. He held my chin and move it a bit so I could look at him.
“What’s wrong? Tell me,” he said. I bit my lower lip, trying to hold my tears but I couldn’t. I suddenly feel like I finally found an alliance, I feel like my frustrations and feelings are valid.
“Shit.”
I heard him curse, surprised that I suddenly burst crying.
