Chapter 12: Curiosity.

As Lydia drove us towards our destination, she suddenly spoke up, her voice filled with curiosity. "You know, I've been observing you guys, and I have to say, you're quite different from the average people I meet." She paused, her eyes narrowing slightly as she continued, "I mean, the way you behave, so calm and calculative. You seem to be always thinking ahead, like you're planning your next move. And your humility, it's refreshing. You don't seem to be bothered by the fact that you're...well, let's just say, you're not like most people."
Max and I exchanged a glance, our faces expressionless. "What do you mean by that?" Max asked, his voice neutral, his eyes locked on Lydia's face.
Lydia's gaze flickered between us, her eyes sparkling with insight. "I mean, you guys look like you've grown up with money. You have this...this wealthy vibe around you. Not your clothes though, but your mannerisms, even the way you carry yourselves. It's like you're used to a certain level of comfort and luxury." She paused, her voice taking on a slightly teasing tone. "I mean, come on, you guys are not actually driving around in a car that's worth more than my entire apartment, and you're not actually wearing designer clothes and eating at fancy restaurants. You're just exactly blending in with the crowd, but something feels different."
Max and I burst out laughing, our denials coming out in unison. "No, no, no! You're totally wrong, Lydia!" Max exclaimed, his eyes shining with mirth. "We're just ordinary guys trying to make a living. We're not wealthy, we're just...resourceful."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Yeah, we're just a couple of guys who like to...... You know......dress up to what we have and eat good food. We're not trying to impress anyone, we're just enjoying life."
Lydia's eyes narrowed, her expression skeptical. "I don't know, guys. I've seen some wealthy people in my time, and you two...you just seem to fit the bill. You've got this air of confidence about you, this sense of entitlement. It's like you're used to getting what you want, when you want it."
We continued to laugh and joke, downplaying Lydia's observations. But deep down, I was impressed by her perceptiveness. How did she know so much about us? It was like she had seen right through our facade, to the very heart of who we were.
As we approached our destination, Lydia's words still lingered in my mind. Was she right? Were we really that transparent? I pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the present moment. We were here to enjoy ourselves, not to dwell on our past or our secrets.
"Well, Lydia, thanks for the vote of confidence," Max said, his voice light. "But we're just happy to be here, enjoying your company."
Lydia smiled, her eyes sparkling with warmth. "I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves. And don't worry, your secrets are safe with me." She paused, her voice taking on a slightly mischievous tone. "But I have to say, I'm intrigued. You guys are definitely hiding something. And I'm determined to figure out what it is."
I raised an eyebrow, my mind racing with possibilities. What did she know, exactly? And how far would she go to uncover the truth about us? I pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the present moment. We were here to have fun, not to worry about our secrets being uncovered.
"Lydia, you're something else," Max said, his voice filled with amusement. "You're like a dog with a bone, aren't you?"
Lydia grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You have no idea," she said, her voice low and conspiratorial. "I'm like a dog with a bone, and I won't let go until I get what I want."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Well, I hope you're ready for a challenge, Lydia. Because we're not going to make it easy for you. But it's nice playing along, even though we've nothing."
Lydia's grin grew wider, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Oh, I'm ready for a challenge," she said, her voice filled with determination. "I'm ready to uncover your secrets, and I won't stop until I do."
As we stepped out of Lydia's car, she gazed at us with a curious expression, her eyes sparkling with intrigue. "You know, I've been thinking," she said, her voice laced with a hint of mischief. "This is just a crossroads area. Why can't I just drive you guys to your doorstep? It's not like I'm asking for your social security numbers or something."
Max and I exchanged a knowing glance, our faces expressionless. I turned back to Lydia, a fake smile plastered on my face. "Well, Lydia, we appreciate your willingness to help, but we're not quite ready to reveal our home address just yet. We're just being cautious, that's all."
Lydia's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze piercing. "What do you mean? You're not trusting me enough? I thought we had a connection, you know, a bond. Don't you trust me?"
I chuckled, trying to sound nonchalant. "It's not that, Lydia. We just like to keep our personal lives private, that's all. And besides, we can't just give away all our secrets at once. We have to leave you with some puzzles to solve, don't we? It's more fun that way."
Lydia's face lit up with a wide grin, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Oh, I see. You guys are playing hard to get, huh? Well, I like a good challenge. I'll just have to keep trying to figure you out. But don't think you can outsmart me, I'm a detective, remember? I can sniff out a mystery from a mile away."
Max and I laughed, our voices laced with amusement. "Good luck with that, Lydia," Max said, his eyes glinting with humor. "We're not afraid of a little detective work. Bring it on."
Lydia's grin grew wider, her eyes shining with determination. "Oh, I will. You guys are just making this more interesting. I'll get to the bottom of this, mark my words."
With that, she bid us farewell, her car driving off into the distance. I watched her leave, my eyes fixed on the vehicle as it disappeared from sight.
"Well, that was fun," Max said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "I'm glad we could entertain her. But seriously, we need to be careful. Lydia's not just any ordinary person. She's smart, and she's determined. We can't let our guard down around her."
I nodded, my expression serious. "I know. But I have to admit, this is getting interesting. I'm curious to see how far she'll go to uncover our secrets. And I have to admit, I'm a little impressed. She's got skills, that one."
Max raised an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with understanding. "Yeah, she does. But we can't underestimate her. She's got a reputation for being one of the best detectives in the business. We need to stay one step ahead of her if we want to keep our secrets safe."
Both of us burst out laughing uncontrollably in the night of the crossroad as we began heading towards the path to the hotel.
I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities. "Let's just hope we're ready for whatever she throws our way. We can't let our guard down, not even for a moment."
Max nodded, his eyes gleaming with determination. "Don't worry, we've got this. We'll outsmart her, no problem."
I smiled, my confidence growing. "Yeah, we will. We're a team, remember? We can handle anything that comes our way."
