Chapter 20: Confession.

As we drove home in Lydia's car, the three of us were in high spirits, singing along to the music playing on the radio. We were having a blast, enjoying each other's company and the joy of the moment. The music was upbeat and energetic, and we couldn't help but move our bodies to the beat. Max was drumming on the backseat, while I was tapping my hands on the dashboard. Lydia was smiling, her eyes shining with happiness, as she sang along to the lyrics.
But as the music came to an end, Lydia turned to me with a curious expression. "Hey, what was going on with you and Gabrielle earlier?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly. "I saw the way you acted before the tension between you was cleared. It looked like something serious was going down."
I shrugged, trying to brush it off. "Nothing, it was just a misunderstanding," I replied, not wanting to get into the details. "We just had a little disagreement, that's all."
But Max, who was sitting in the backseat, couldn't resist chiming in. "Oh, come on, it was more than that!" he said, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Tell her, man! Tell her how Gabrielle was trying to apologize to you, but you weren't having it. You played it cool, pretended to listen to her, and then basically told her to kick rocks!"
I shot Max a warning look, trying to silence him. "Max, shut up," I said, laughing. "It's not a big deal, really."
But Max just continued, spilling the whole story to Lydia in a joking manner. "So, Gabrielle was trying to make amends, but our boy here wasn't having it. He was like, 'No, I'm good. I don't need your apologies.' And then she was like, 'But I'm really sorry!' And he was like, 'Sorry isn't enough!'"
I hit Max gently on the arm, trying to stop him. "Max, come on, that's enough," I said, laughing. "You're making it sound way more dramatic than it actually was."
But Max just looked at me innocently. "What? I'm just telling the truth!" he said, grinning.
Lydia, however, was not amused. She was dead serious, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. "If it was me, I would never do that to you," she said, her voice firm. "I would never try to hurt you or betray your trust. You're my friend, and I would do anything to protect you."
We both thought she was joking, but then we realized she was serious. Max and I exchanged a surprised glance, and then looked back at Lydia.
"Wow, Lydia, you're a true friend," Max said, impressed. "We're lucky to have you in our lives."
I nodded in agreement. "Yeah, thanks, Lydia. That means a lot coming from you. You're always there for us, no matter what."
Lydia smiled slightly, her eyes still fixed on the road. "I'm just saying, if someone messed with my friends, they'd have to answer to me. I wouldn't hesitate to stand up for you guys, no matter what."
We all laughed at that, feeling grateful for Lydia's loyalty and support. The rest of the ride home was filled with laughter and good conversation, and we were all glad to have each other's backs. We knew that no matter what happened, we could always count on each other to be there, through thick and thin.
As we reached the crossroads, we stepped out of the car, and Lydia turned to me with a curious expression. "You still don't want me to know where you live?" she asked, her voice tinged with a hint of disappointment. Her eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if searching for a hidden truth.
Max, who was standing behind me, spoke up before I could respond. "That's up to you to find out, remember? It's still a game, right?" His tone was light, but I could sense a hint of seriousness beneath the surface.
Lydia smiled, but I could tell that the smile was forced, that she was hurt that we were still hiding something from her. She didn't know what it was, but she could sense that we were keeping secrets. Her eyes flickered with a hint of frustration, and I could tell that she was trying to process her emotions.
"Okay, fine," she said finally, her voice light. "I'll play along. But you owe me, Ryan." Her eyes seemed to sparkle with a hint of determination, as if she was determined to uncover the truth.
I nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "I know, Lydia. And I promise, one day I'll make it up to you." My voice was sincere, and I could tell that Lydia appreciated the gesture.
We watched as Lydia drove away, the sound of her car fading into the distance. The silence that followed was palpable, and I could sense that Max was waiting for me to speak.
Finally, I turned to him, my expression serious. "You know, Max, I think Lydia has feelings for me." My voice was low, and I could tell that Max was taken aback by my statement.
He raised an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with interest. "Really? What makes you think that?"
I shrugged, trying to gather my thoughts. "Just the way she looks at me, I guess. And the way she seems to care about me. It's more than just friendship, Max."
Max nodded, his eyes sparkling with understanding. "Yeah, I thought so. And that's why we have to be careful, Ryan. We can't let our feelings get in the way of our friendship with Lydia. We have to keep our priorities straight."
I nodded, feeling a sense of determination. "You're right, Max. We'll keep our feelings hidden, for now. But one day, when the time is right, we'll let Lydia know how we feel."
Max grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "And when that day comes, Ryan, it's going to be a wild ride." His tone was light, but I could sense a hint of seriousness beneath the surface.
I smiled back at him, feeling a sense of excitement. "You're right, Max. It's going to be a wild ride." And with that, we both knew that our lives were about to change in ways we never could have imagined.
