Chapter 21: Family.

As we walked back to the hotel room, I was lost in thought, my mind replaying the events of the day like a movie on repeat. Max didn't say a word, seeming to sense that I needed some time to process my thoughts, to digest the emotions that were swirling inside me like a storm. But as soon as we stepped into the room, he spoke up, his voice soft and serious, like a gentle breeze on a summer day.
"Ryan, I know you feel like I don't understand you, like I'm not getting the complexity of your emotions, the turmoil that's brewing inside you," he said, his eyes locked on mine, filled with a deep understanding and concern. "But believe me, I really do. I know you're drawn to Lydia, like a moth to a flame, and I know it's not just a physical attraction, but something deeper, something that speaks to your soul."
I looked at him, my expression neutral, but my mind racing with thoughts, like a runaway train that couldn't be stopped. I knew what Max was saying made sense, like a voice of reason in a chaotic world, but a part of me couldn't help but feel drawn to Lydia, like a magnet to steel.
"I know what you're saying, Max," I said finally, my voice low and husky, like a whispered secret. "But I can't help how I feel. And besides, we don't even know if Lydia feels the same way. Maybe she just sees me as a friend, a confidant, a partner in crime."
Max sighed, his eyes filled with concern, like a parent worried about their child's well-being. "That's true, Ryan, we don't know how Lydia feels, but even if she does feel the same way, is it worth the risk? We're not just talking about a casual fling here, Ryan. We're talking about our friend, someone we care about deeply, someone who's been there for us through thick and thin. If things go south, it's going to be messy, like a broken vase that can't be glued back together."
I nodded, knowing that Max was right, like a student who finally understands the lesson. But I couldn't shake off the feeling that I had for Lydia, like a shadow that follows you everywhere.
"I know, Max," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. "But I need to follow my heart on this one, like a sailor following the stars. I promise you, I'll be careful, like a tightrope walker balancing on a thin wire."
Max nodded, his expression softening, like a summer breeze on a hot day. "I know you will, Ryan. Just be careful, okay? We don't want to lose our friendship over this, like a ship losing its anchor in a storm."
I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Max, like a flower blooming in the desert. "Thanks, man. I appreciate your concern, like a lifeline thrown to a drowning man."
Max smiled, his eyes sparkling with understanding, like a diamond in the rough. "Anytime, Ryan. That's what brothers are for, like a safety net that catches you when you fall."
Now early in the morning, as I stood in front of the bathroom sink, brushing my teeth with a gentle circular motion, I felt a sense of relief wash over me, like a cool breeze on a sweltering summer day. The weight of my concerns, the mountain of anxiety that had been pressing down on me, seemed to have been lifted, like a burden finally set free. I had been carrying the weight of my feelings for Lydia around with me for what felt like an eternity, and finally, after my conversation with Max the night before, I felt like I could breathe again.
Just as I was rinsing my mouth with water, Max walked into the bathroom, his toothbrush in hand, and a look of excitement on his face. We stood side by side, brushing our teeth in silence for a moment, the only sound being the soft scrubbing of our toothbrushes against our teeth. I couldn't help but notice the look of anticipation on Max's face, and I wondered what was behind it.
Then, Max turned towards me, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm, and began to speak, his voice muffled by the toothbrush in his mouth. "Hey, Ryan, I've got some plans with Marie tonight...," he said, his words trailing off as he continued to brush his teeth.
I looked at him curiously, my toothbrush paused in mid-air, as I waited for him to continue. "What kind of plans?" I asked, my voice equally muffled by my toothbrush.
Max spit out a mouthful of toothpaste and rinsed his mouth with water before answering. "I'm planning on proposing to her tonight," he said, his eyes shining with excitement.
My eyes widened in surprise, and I felt a surge of happiness for my brother. "That's amazing, Max!" I exclaimed, my toothbrush still in my mouth. "Congratulations! I had no idea you were planning on proposing so soon."
Max grinned, his face lighting up with joy. "Yeah, I know it's fast, but I just can't imagine spending my life with anyone else. Marie is the one for me, and I know she feels the same way."
I nodded in agreement, feeling a sense of happiness for my friend. "You two are meant to be," I said, my voice filled with conviction. "I'm honored to be a part of your journey, Max. You've been like a brother to me, and I'm so glad to see you happy."
Max smiled, his eyes filled with gratitude. "Thanks, Ryan. That means a lot coming from you. You've been a true family to me, always there to offer advice and support. And I have to say, I'm a little nervous about tonight. I hope everything goes smoothly."
I smiled back at him, feeling a sense of pride and happiness for my brother. "I'm sure it will, Max. You've got this. Just be yourself, and speak from your heart. Marie loves you for who you are, and I'm sure she'll say yes."
Max grinned, his face filled with determination. "I will, Ryan. I will. Thanks for the pep talk, man. I needed that."
I clapped him on the back, feeling a sense of joy and excitement for my best friend and brother. "Anytime, Max. That's what family are for. Now go out there and make it happen!"
