48: Ted, Is That You?

~Beth~
Few days ago I returned from the hospital. My body is still feeling very weak from the ordeal, but I am grateful for the exceptional care I've received from Elle and Celine who comes visiting from time to time.
As I settle down in my favorite chair, I was eager to catch up with her younger sister, and hear all about the latest happenings around.
"You won't believe it," Elle said, her eyes sparkling with excitement, "Ted, was here, he actually came to the hospital while you were there!"
"Really?" I ask, my eyebrows raised in surprise. "What did he do while he was there?" I further interrogated, feeling very curious.
Elle excitedly explains, "He not only paid your entire hospital bill, but he also took care of your other outstanding bills that had pile up. He only came on that first day you were admitted, though." My eyes widens in astonishment.
"Wow, Ted actually came to see me? I can't believe he would do something so thoughtful and generous, even after my testimonies against him.” I say with utmost surprised.
As We continue our conversation, I started to feel remorse for the way I had talk about Ted in the past.
My sister, Elle, notices change in my demeanor and couldn't help but comment.
"Beth, you seem a bit off. What's going on? What are you thinking about?" Elle asked her elder me, moving closer.
"I don't know, Elle, I've been thinking about Ted a lot lately. I feel terrible. Maybe I was wrong with the decisions I made about him,” I voiced in confusion.
Elle could see the regret in my eyes and suggested, "Maybe you should try to work things out with Ted. It sounds like he still cares about you."
"You really think so? I don't even know if he'd want to talk to me,” I mentioned, her eyes wondering about.
"Well, you won't know unless you try. Give him a call and explain everything. It's better to clear the air than to keep wondering."
I agree, deciding to call Ted and explain everything. I took a deep breath and dial his number. However, unbeknownst to me, Ted wasn't with his mobile phone.
"Hey, this is Ted. Sorry I missed your call. Leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can."
Beth hesitated for a moment before leaving a message, unsure of what to say.
"Hey Ted, it's Beth. I was just thinking about you and wanted to talk. Give me a call back when you get a chance. Bye."
I drop the phone down, waiting to know If Ted would be able to see my message soon.
I frown, pacing around and praying silently that he returns the call.
Elle tries to calme down but honestly, I don't think I'm breathing normal in the next few minutes.
The second I hear the phone ringing, I rush towards it and picked the call the moment I saw that it was Ted calling.
“Hello,” I greet but no one replies, Icould hear the voice on the other end, but for some reason the person on the other end didn't say a word.
I could sense that something was off. The silence was unnerving, and all I could hear is our breathing.
After a few moments of awkward silence, I finally mustered up the courage to speak again. "Hello?" I say, her voice hesitant and uncertain. I waited for a response, but there was none.
It seems this strange person was enjoying the panic in my voice.
I didn't know who was on the other end, but also don't want to give anything away just yet.
The silence only added to my unease. I tried again, my voice tinge with concern this time.
"Ted, is that you?" I ask, hoping for a response. Still, the person didn't say a word.
My worry increases, and I decide to try one more time.
"If this is some kind of joke, it's not funny," I say, my voice trembling slightly.
We continue to listen to each other's breaths, the tension growing with each passing second. I know I need to speak with Ted, but this strange encounter was making me second-guess my decision.
I hesitate before finally speaking up, “I am going to end this call if you do not reply.”
Even after my threat, Ted didn’t say anything because he was certainly not the person at the other end.
Finally, unable to take the silence any longer, I sighed and hung up the phone. Before that, I heard the person giving out a satisfactory laugher, as though they were mocking me.
Elle had already left and that was enough relief to me, my face had turned red and I was so angry, who was that person. The only face that comes in my mind was Enid but I wave it off.
Some moments later, Ted calls me back.
“Why are you calling again? To play the same dirty trick from earlier on?” I began to rant as soon as I picked his call.
Ted, sensing my unease, responds cautiously, "What's going on, Beth?"
Before I could reply, Enid's voice suddenly cut in, "Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you guys were on the line. I'll just... uh, leave you two alone."
With a sigh, I hung up the phone, determined to find another way to make things right with Ted. I thought to myself, I can't let Enid's interference ruin our conversation. There has to be another way to reach out to him.
Little did I know that Enid's interference was just the beginning of a series of misunderstandings that would test our relationship further.
We found themselves caught in a web of miscommunication, with Enid unintentionally playing a significant role in our growing confusion.
The more we try to clear the air, the more tangled our situation became.
I would later reflect on this period of our relationship, realizing that despite the challenges we face, it will ultimately bring us closer to each together.
But for now, we were left to navigate the murky waters of uncertainty, hoping to find our way back to each other.
