59: Help Me, I Can't Take It Anymore
Ted
The sound of Beth's scream had me running into the house like a mad person. I pushed the door open with as much force that the sound echoed across the dark space.
I rush inside, searching for Beth in the living room, but she's not there. I frantically rush to the pantry and check every other place I could but I couldn't find her. My mind begins to imagine worse case scenarios. Then I start to shout her name, hoping to hear her reply when I hear the sound of something falling to the ground.
It sounded like a spoon or some kind of cooking utensil, and it was coming from the kitchen. I rush over to the kitchen, the one place I forgot to check, and see Beth who seemed to be frozen in place with a frying pan in her hand, looking down at the ground.
I frown, wondering why she's looking at the ground with a pan in her hand, but as I go closer I see why. I gasp as I see a man that looked to be unconscious on the floor in front of her.
"What happened?" I asked her and she gasps out of her trance before she looks at me, scared buy voice.
"Ted." She said, her voice shaky.
"What happened?" I repeat.
"Well, I was seating on the couch and I felt thirsty, so I came into the kitchen to get water to drink when this guy came in and tried to attack me with a knife, but I was able to hit him over the head with this frying pan." She says as she drops the frying pan on the table. "I hope he's not dead though."
"I don't think he is, Beth. It's just a frying pan. Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" I ask, trying to pull her away from the man on the floor.
She shows me the hand that I couldn't see before and I gasp as I notice a long cut from her inner elbow, almost reaching her wrist that had blood dropping from it.
"How did you get this?" I ask, inspecting the wound.
"Well, I told you he had a knife. He managed to swipe me with it." She deadpans.
"Okay, come over let me clean it up, or should we just go to the hospital?" I ask her and she shakes her head.
"No, no hospital. Just help me clean it up." She says and I nod.
She follows behind me as I pull her to the bathroom. I take her to the sink and turn on the water at the sink, to wash away the blood and she hisses.
"Sorry." I say and then I take her back to the living room and let her sit on the couch.
"I'll be back. Lemme get the first aid box." I say and then rush to the kitchen to check the counter, not failing to check on the guy on the floor before going back.
I sit in front of her and take her arm in my hand. I pour the alcohol on the cotton swab and use it to clean up the wound and Beth hisses. I apologize and carefully clean it up and wrap the bandage around it.
"What do we do now?" I ask her.
"We have to look for a way to track the number that called us, that way, we'll be able to find Elle."
"How do we do that? We don't have the facilities for that." I say with a frown on my face.
I sigh as I look at Beth. "Do you trust me, Beth?" I ask her seriously.
"Yes, I do. More than anyone."
"Then we should just go to the police. That's a better option for us."
I watch her face turn from serious to one of disbelief.
"This again? When will you give up this idea of going to the police. Elle could get hurt because of that. Have you suddenly forgotten what just happened?" She pointed to the kitchen.
"We could always do it secretly, no one has to know."
"Whoever's doing this knows what we're doing and what were talking about at the moment. We can't risk it. I refuse to." She shakes her head.
"Okay, I get your point." I say actually thinking about what she said. She was right.
She stands up from beside me and walks to where the man she had knocked out was lying.
"What are you doing?" I ask, going over to her.
"I just wanna check his pulse." She says and picks the guys hand up and is quiet for a moment.
"Be careful." I warn.
"He's alive, but we have to leave right now before he wakes up." She says walking over to me.
"You're right." I say as I pick my keys and she does the same and we leave the house.
"But where do we go?" I ask her and she shrugs.
"I really don't know, but anywhere far from here would be good. As long as it's not here, let's just leave." She says and I nod, unlocking my car so that we can get in.
I turn on the engine and start driving when I hear Beth sigh and her body sags.
"Hey, it's going to be alright." I say, holding unto her hand and squeezing it.
"Really?"
"Yeah, trust me. Elle's going to be fine." I say and she nods her head.
Beth's phone rings just as I was about to say something and she pulls it out of her pocket and looks at it. Her eyes widen when she sees how it is.
"Who is it?" I ask with a frown on my face.
"It's Mark." She says, showing me the caller ID.
"Put it on speaker phone, let's hear what he has to say. I won't say anything while you speak to him." I say and she nods then picks the call up and puts it on speaker as we wait to hear what he has to say.
"Hello, Beth." His voice rings out and I can hear the smirk in it. "Didn't I warn you not to joke around with me? I clearly told you there would be consequences." He says, confirming our suspicions.
"Mark, you devious, lying bastard. What are you doing with my sister? Let her go. Whatever we have is between us, why did you drag my sister into it?"
"It doesn't matter who I drag into it, Beth. As long as I get what I want, that's all that matters." He says and becomes silent for a while, probably pondering on it.
"Please can I talk to my sister?" Beth pleads.
"Oh, you want to talk to Elle? But she seems to be busy right now, so I don't know if I can let you speak to her."
"Please, Mark. Just let me hear her voice at least this once."
"Okay, it's your choice, but don't say I didn't warn you, I told you she was busy."
He goes silent as we hear him walking and Beth and I look at each other, confused. I decide to park the car in a corner, so that I can give my full attention to the conversation.
We hear a door open and screams that seem to come from behind the door that he just opened.
"Here she is." Mark says, but the only thing we hear are screams, and Beth and I look at each other before looking back at the phone.
"Hey Elle, your sister would like to speak to you." Mark says and what we hear next sends chills down my body and makes my heart break.
"Beth!!! Please help me, I can't take it anymore." Elle's voice screams through the phone.Download Novelah App
