57: It Has To Be Him

Ted
I drive to Beth's house as fast as I can. When I heard the voicemail, from Beth, I jumped out of my bed, and changed my clothes before racing out of the house.
I had actually woken up to use the toilet when I decided to check my phone. I saw a missed call from Beth and a voicemail from her. She sounded really scared and panicked on the phone.
The drive to her isn't long because of how fast I'm driving. I park my car at the front of her house, not caring about its position, as I lock it and rush into the house.
I search every room in the house, but Beth is nowhere to be found. I amke sure to check everywhere and when I can't find her, I begin to call her name. I shout her name, but there's no reply from anywhere.
I came down the stairs and as I'm about to walk into the living room, I see a shadow around the place where the back door is. I walk over towards it, cautiously. If it was Beth, she would have answered when I called her.
I got closer to it, but by the time I get there, it's like the shadow and it's owner had disappeared into this air. I frown, wondering who that could be.
Could it be the person who took Elle?
I them pull out my phone from my pocket and decide to call Beth. The phone rings, but there's no reply, I suddenly hear a sound coming from somewhere in the house. I turn back and walk towards where I heard the sound and it was coming from the living room.
I search around the couches and find her phone hidden in the couch. I pull it out and wonder where she would have gone to and left her phone.
I hope she hasn't also been taken. I would go on a rampage if that ever happened.
The sudden movement of the door knob and the sound catch my attention. Thinking that it could be the guy that I had failed to catch, I pick up a flower vase that I saw in the house, and stood by the door, waiting for the person to come in.
The door opens and the person steps in and just as I'm about to drop the vase on the person's head, the person screams loudly and I see that it's Beth. I sigh in relief at seeing her as I drop the vase and hug her. My heart rate speeds up, happy to see her.
"What do you think you're doing, Ted?" She asks, her voice muffled as I press her to my chest and kiss the top of her head.
"Sorry, babe. I thought you were someone else." I pull her away from me to take a look at her face. "Where did you go to? I've been searching the whole house for you."
"Why would you think that I was someone else? Anyway, I went to talk to some of my neighbors, to ask if they saw anything." She steps away from me and walks towards the couch.
"So, what did they say?"
"They all said that they didn't see anything, and it may be true, because it was already pretty late when I got back." She leans her head on the back of the couch, her body shaking as she began to cry.
I walk over to her and try my best to comfort her by rubbing her back. She turns to me and hugs me fully, rubbing her face on my chest.
"I really don't know what to do, Ted. I don't know what Elle is going through right now. I don't know if she's okay or she's hurt." She says between her sobs.
My heart hurts as I watch her cry. I really don't like seeing her hurt so much. She's the love of my life and I would do anything for her.
"Don't worry, Beth. Nothing's going to happen to Elle. I can assure you of that."
"Oh, and…" I start, about to tell her about the shadow of someone I had seen in the house, but stop myself as I remember that she's already to stressed. Telling her that would just stress her even more.
"What is it you wanted to say?" She asks me.
"Don't worry about it, I actually didn't want to say anything." I say, giving her a tight smile, but the way she keeps looking at me tells me she doesn't balieve me, but she seems to let it go.
"Okay, now can you tell me in detail what happened?" I ask her as I move her to sit on the couch.
She clears her throat before she starts speaking. "Well, I just got back from work and ate and changed my clothes when I noticed that I hadn't heard her voice since I came back. So I went to her room, but she wasn't there, I called all her friends but no one knew where she was." She stops to catch her breath.
"So I went up to her room to stay, thinking maybe she just went out to see one of her friends and she was running late, or maybe she had gone to a party. I lay on her bed when I saw this paper lying on it." She hands a piece of paper that she was holding to me.
I read what was written on the paper and it had the words 'I warned you' written on it. I sigh as I put the paper down, wondering what we could do and who could be behind this.
"I think I know who did this." Beth says and she grabs my attention. "It's Mark. It has to be him. No one else would do something like this."
As she said that, my mind goes back to day when Mark had threatened to do something bad to us if I didn't stay away from Beth. My heart skips a beat at the thought that I may be the reason for what Elle is going through.
I stare at Beth not wanting to tell her, because she may become furious and send me away again. She's already been through a lot and was going through so much for me to add to it.
"I tried calling him so many times, but the call isn't connecting. I think he's doing this to spite us and make us worry even more. I really don't know what to do." She sighs again and it seems like tears are about to fall from her eyes when I turn her face to mine.
"Hey, Beth. Don't cry anymore. I promise you we will find her." I say and she nods, wiping at her eyes.
"How about we go to the police and see what they would say about this." I tell her and she shakes her head.
"No, I've already called them, they said I can't report a missing persons case till after twenty four hours.
"No, it's no longer a missing persons case, it's a case of kidnapping. If we go to them, we can tell them what he left, so then they'll know what to do." I stare at her, waiting for her reply.
"Okay, let's go." She says and she stands up to take her jacket, but I notice that she's still in her night wear.
"Beth, you're still in your night wear." I say and laugh a little.
She looks down at herself and sighs.
"I'm sorry, I'm just too confused at the moment." She says. "Excuse me, I'll change quickly." She climbs up the stairs and makes her way to her room.
I sit back down on the couch and put my hand under my chin. I really hope nothing happens to Elle. I can't even imagine how devastated Beth would be.
If I get my hand on Mark, I'll make sure to kill him, and I don't care about the police. He's done enough harm to all of us.
I stand up when I notice Beth coming down the stairs fully dressed. I take her hand and give her jacket to her. She collects it and smiles at me and we leave the house and go to my car.
Just as we're about to get into the car, Beth's phone rings. She stops and stares at me.
"What's wrong?" I ask her, but she holds her hand up, an indication for me to wait and picks the call.
I watch her expression change from curiousity to shock in the seconds that she holds the phone to her ear. She drops the phone to her side as her body sags.
"What's wrong? Who was that?" I ask, going over to her side.
Her eyes turn to me and I could see a look of resignation and worry on her face.
"Someone just called me and said that if we go to the police to report what happened, there would be consequences."
