LIS: 46

“Umma went abroad to find herself. They got married early. She became a plain housewife. Dad did everything so she wouldn’t need to look for anything else, but she still preferred to work. Unfortunately, she fell in love, got pregnant by another man. And the rest is history.”
"Do you think she regretted leaving your father?”
“She never told me before, until today. I know she also misses the Philippines. And as their child, I still hope that she and Dad would get back together. Or, even if they never get back together again, I’m hoping that they would, at least, be cordial with each other.”
"You are right. Any child would want that.”
When they were at the breakfast table, Carter was well-taken care of by his mother and sister. He was treated like a prince. Even the topic of Min Ji was not mentioned. They were probably just happy that the woman was no longer in Carter’s life.
Cheska was drinking coffee while Eun Young was getting ready for school when they heard someone banging on the gate. "Who was that? Don't even know how to use the doorbell."
Carter stood up to answer their visitor. He returned with a worried look on his face. "Don't come out. Park Gung and his men are here."
"What does he want? You’ve paid him already, haven’t you? What if he’s asking for money again?" Cheska asked nervously.
This was what Mikha was afraid of when she said that a gangster’s words should not be trusted. They live and breathe harassment, deception, extortion, and violence. And Cheska was just hard-headed because she didn't want to stay away from Carter.
"I'll handle them,” he said.
"Be careful, Carter.” He nodded before going out to talk to Park Gung's group.
Eun Young gestured in the direction of one of the rooms. From there they could see what was happening at the gate. Cheska and Selina followed the young girl. Cheska could see ten men from where they were. It was not just Park Gung's usual men but there were also other new men with them. They all looked like they were the same age as Eun Young. They were still even in their uniform of black long sleeve polo and black pants.
Eun Young gasped. “He is here! Dragon is here too. I knew he would get even with me.”
"Who's Dragon?" Cheska asked.
“Shin Gun. The one next to Park Gung. He is my classmate and Park Gung's son.”
A tall young man was standing in front of Carter with his bag slung over his shoulder and one hand tucked inside his pants pocket. He had that bored look in his beautiful eyes. He was not that fair-skinned. He had his long in a ponytail. That was Park Gung’ son? The boy was handsome. Couldn’t say the same about the father though.
Eun Young was almost in tears. "This is all my fault. I shouldn't have fought with that Shin Gun."
"Eun Young, I know you can be a little tactless sometimes. But what did you just say?" Selina asked in a calm voice.
"Umma, I can't stand his laziness in school. My bestfriend's school play grades failed because of him. So I fought with him. I told him he had a good life because his father lives off of harassing other people for money.”
"You really said that to Park Gung's son? I told you to guard your tongue. That will only get you into trouble," Selina scolded her daughter.
Eun Young just bowed down her head. "Umma, mianhamnida. I just can't stand the way they bullied a student because he didn’t give them his money. I said they are no different from their fathers. Umma, what if they increase our debt? How will we be able to pay it?"
Selina hugged her child. "As long as they don’t hurt us, we can earn enough money to pay them.”
Cheska noticed that Carter and Park Gung were having a serious talk. They were speaking in Korean and the gangster’s leader’s voice was a little quieter. Even Selina and Eun Young couldn't hear the conversation. Cheska became even more nervous. If they hurt even a single strand of Carter’s hair, she would really report them to the police. Ah, whatever. This was not right. She looked around them. That room looked like it was a warehouse. She could find something here to use against the gangsters.
Cheska was alarmed when Park Gung raised one hand. Cheska’s finger was all ready to speed dial the nearest police station. And she was surprised when the gangsters all knelt and bowed in front of Carter. "Uriah deul deul sonsaengnim, dowa juseyo."
"What did they say?" Cheska asked and turned to her two companions. She didn’t understand a thing. She thought it was going to be war earlier. Why did they suddenly kneel before Carter and look like they were begging for his mercy or something?
"They want Carter to help their children."
