LIS: 32

CHESKA’S EYES GLISTENED with unshed tears as she nodded. She picked up the pen and just stared at the blank paper in silence. What would she say to Doc Darry? She doesn’t know. The things she felt about losing him, she just kept it all to herself. And she didn’t know what to say to him anymore. That she loved him? That she wished they could have spent more time together? That he left a huge part in her heart and that she was having a hard time moving on.
But she couldn’t put it into writing. She didn’t know how to start. She didn’t know if that’s how she still feels. Was she still sad? Does it seem like there was a big hole in her heart right now? Does she still feel like wanting to be left alone and wallow in her room while remembering him?
She glanced at Carter and caught him staring at her. "What?"
"Nothing," he said and continued his own writing.
Cheska looked at her paper. Her questions had been answered. She smiled as the ideas flowed in her mind easily. Emotions overflowed. Probably even a dam would not be able to stop the flow of words. She wasn’t sure how much time did the host had given them until she heard his voice.
"Who wants to read their message in front?" Damon asked.
Cheska immediately raised her hand. "I want to go first."
“Yes, Cheska! Bring your partner with you.”
Carter looked surprised. “You’re really gonna be the first? I’m not done yet.”
"Just say whatever you want."
She pulled him up. "That's okay."
He has not been an enthusiastic student since childhood. She had high grades with her exams and quizzes but she failed in class participation and extra-curricular activities. She was afraid to say her inner thoughts. She felt like fainting whenever she speak in front of a crowd. She was not that person anymore. At least for today.
She didn’t let go of Carter’s hand and held up the letter she wrote for him. Damon held up the microphone for her. Carter worried his lips. He looked nervous at what she was about to say. She gave out a big sigh. She was also nervous but was kinda excited as well. As if her heart would burst with emotion.
“My life was fine without love, without someone who will make me laugh. I live day by day knowing I would end up alone in my room, crying myself to sleep. Until you came into my life like a sweet surprise. You turned my life upside down and you drive me crazy, a sweet kind of crazy. I feel alive for the first time in so many years. And I don’t want to go back to that lonely life anymore.” She bowed. "Kamsahamnida, Carter."
He had a confused look on his face when she raised up her head. Yes, it was not a message for Doc Darryl but for Carter himself. Cheska was not sure if he knew about it. He didn’t need to know. She had no plans to tell him. But she was happy she was able to say how she felt about him.
"It's your turn," she told him.
There was a long silence as he just stared at her before he started speaking. What if the message wasn’t for her but for that Kpop wannabe?
Just smile, Cheska. You are just pretending anyway. Don't get hurt. Don't expect. Just smile until your cheeks crack.
“When we first met, you have the saddest eyes I have ever seen. Sadness that touched my own lonely soul. And I vow that I will spend every moment making you smile and laugh.” She smiled at his message when she remembered how he made her happy with the simplest things. “Yes, that smile right now every time you look at me lights up my world and makes my soul fly. Stay beautiful, my angel.”
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed the back of her hand. His angel. He said she was his angel. His message was for her.
She hugged him and heard him wince a little. Then she tapped his back. “Thank you.”
Today, she was beautiful and she was his angel. While he was the bright ray of sun in her gloomy world.
“URITA CHOUM MANNA sseulttae, dang sineun naega bongajang seul peunnu neul gaji goittta."
Cheska turned to Carter. They sat on one of the benches that led to Namsan Tower or better known as N Seoul Tower. They went there after visiting various temples and palaces in Seoul. They changed into normal clothes when their temple tour was through. Carter said it would be difficult to go to the tower in their traditional clothes. They returned the car to Carter's friend and just took the bus to the tower because it was more convenient. It was seven in the evening already and they could see the city lights below.
"What were you saying?" she asked.
