'No please, Lilian!' I screamed in fright. Right before my eyes Lilian wanted to land me in jail.
As soon as Kate left my house, Isaac knelt to propose to me, I opened my mouth in shock because I thought he would delay it based on what had happened earlier. But it was like saying it had to be today. He seemed to have made up his mind.
But another unusual thing occurred, I heard a deafening sound, and I covered my mouth out of surprise. Isaac stood up immediately gazing at me, I rushed to the kitchen where the sound came from.
I saw my friend, Lilian in the pool of her blood.
'Isaac, please come and help me, my heart sank, seeing her lying unconscious on the floor of the kitchen with stained blood in her hand.
Isaac rushed over to see her, while I called the police and the emergency department.
'What happened ma'am? You will need to give your report.' The policeman declared.
Thank God she was still breathing.
'Calm down, calm down!' I kept on hearing. I gave my report about the incident in my house.
All I wanted was for her to be alive to tell us her story.
'Don't worry, Derin. Everything will soon be over.' Isaac encouraged.
He kept on patting my back as I went to the police station and back to the hospital. He was by my side to comfort me.
'But how could my friend do this to me?' I kept on asking Isaac.
He held my hands in an assuring manner as we seated beside Lillian waiting for her to come around.
'One thing is clear, she was under torment. Kate's arrival at the house complicated issues. Her words were piercing. She managed to control her emotions.
You should understand that the same man impregnated her and her cousin. Now Kate came to insult her person, dehumanizing her. Her child can never have the feel of a normal family. She got pregnant by a man that does not love her. My baby, all these were too much for her.'
'Is that why she should cut herself with a kitchen knife as if I was the one trying to kill her? She wanted to implicate me! Can't you get it?' I yelled, sobbing in the process.
'Come over, let's leave and return later in the day. I'm sure she will tell us her pains. Don't be too hard on yourself. Relax my baby!'
'Why must it be the time of your proposal of marriage? Can you recall that it happened twice?'
'I know, but I can do it now!'
'You mean right here in the hospital?' I demanded.
Before I could agree, he hastily knelt and asked me gazing into my eyes. Looking at him I saw his eyes looking so glorious. My heart melted and nothing else matter again.
Then I heard people clapping, visitors, some nurses, doctors…
'Say yes, to the Doctor please our lady doctor.
'Oh, it's my favorite doctor.'
'Don't keep the gentleman waiting.'
These are some of the comments going on as I managed to smile and said, 'Yes I will marry you.'
Isaac got up and picked me up swirling me around as everyone around cheered gleefully.
When he finally put me down, someone asked.
'Where is the ring, Doctor?' People laughed. And another doctor shouted. 'He is too excited to bring it out.'
He knelt again, and he brought out one of the most beautiful rings I have ever seen from his pocket, while I stretched out my left hand for him.
He glared at my face with a lovely smile on his handsome face, and announced,
Hey, all of you present, I knew Derin since she was six years old, she was my friend from primary school, till secondary school. I have always loved her but I had no opportunity to tell her about how I feel until she came to the United Kingdom. Though the enemy fought our union I made up my mind never to give up.
Today I count myself fortunate to tell her that I love her with all my life.'
People cheered.
Turning to me still on his knees, he told me,
Baby girl, you will always be my best girlfriend, my lover, and now my wife-to-be. I will always love you.'
He stood up and hugged me for a very long time.
Then the good news came that Lilian has been calling my name.
'Dr. Derin, your friend is awake, she has been asking of you.' The nurse uttered with a smirk on her face.
'This is a double joy for you?' Another nurse uttered.
Isaac and I disengaged and we both went to see her in the ward. It was a mixed feeling for me. Isaac noticed my mood and asked,
I thought you will be jumping up for joy, my baby?'
'This girlfriend is a thorn in my flesh, my love.'
'Hmm, I love the sound of this, can you please repeat the, phrase my love, again?' Isaac mumbled.
'That is a word you will keep on hearing over and over again, my love.'
Isaac grinned and clasped my body to his as we entered Lilian's room at the hospital.
