Eddy felt uneasy about what I told him earlier, concerning Sonia and worse after I had ended the call without picking up. From his looks, it was evident that he was quite displeased by my reaction, but i wasn't so much bothered about what he was thinking, I was scared of finding out the truth, if the truth was exactly what I feared.
Eddy didn't say anything to me, though I know he wanted to, maybe he didn't know how to, so I thought to break the silence as it only made me think about what I needed to forget for the moment.
"Eddy, what is it? Why are you keeping a long face? What is the problem? I asked, then taking my glass of wine, I raised it up and drank from it.
"Sonia called you right? She was the one who called you, that's if I am not mistaken." Eddy asked.
I bent my head for a while, before taking it up again. "Yes, Eddy. She was the one. Yeah, so what about it? I asked him, trying to sound angry that he was asking me that.
"You should have picked up her call. She is only worried about you, come on man." Eddy said in a worried manner.
"I don't want to speak to her okay. I am not in that right frame of mind, so please, just over look that." I replied sharply, expecting that he doesn't bring it up again.
"That is why we are here. So we can figure out to sort things out. Yeah, in my own case, I am the guilty one. But in this case, you are just playing victim." Eddy answered boldly.
I looked at him with anger on my face. I thought to ignore him, but this statement was worth the response I had in mind for him. "Eddy stop it! Stop it please! I scolded, then continued. "Playing victim? Did you just say, I am playing victim? Like I am just cooking things up and rubbing it on her face? Is that what you think of me? Wait a minute, why are you taking her side when you should be taking mine, is there something you are not telling me? I asked furiously.
"I think I should ask you that question. I mean, why are you raising your voice, because I stated the truth raw to you, is that why?
"Eddy, I am not in the mood for all these talks of yours alright. I came here to find peace of mind and that's what I am going to get. Peace of mind! I said loudly, making emphasis on the, peace of mind.
"Hahahaha. If you are not in the mood now, you will later. After all, it's our future we are talking about now, isn't it? I guess we all have our parts to play on it."
"Eddy, I don't know what to say. I am getting angry every time I think about it." I said almost amidst tears.
"Alex, tell me. What exactly happened between you and Sonia? Eddy asked, quite concerned about the situation.
I let out a very deep and long sigh. Looking at Eddy, I knew I just had to tell him. He was waiting patiently to hear what I had to say.
"I came home from work today as usual. You know Sonia has been home after the checkup she went for and was advised to stay at home for the meantime, right."
Eddy nodded, "yeah, true. I'm listening."
"Okay. I walked towards the house and noticed a basket, a beautiful basket, like these expensive ones you use to go for shopping. Just like that. I called Sonia and my mother-in-law. At first, I was thinking that they were the ones that forgot it out there, but they said they weren't and no one went for shopping today." I paused for a little while, then I continued again.
"Sonia didn't want me to touch it, scared that there might be a letter bomb or something, not knowing she had her personal reasons for doing that." I blurted, slightly pained.
Eddy reacted to that immediately. "Listen man, forget about Sonia and what you think she did to you. Just go straight to the point and tell what happened."
I nodded and calmed myself, so I don't overreact at the process of telling my own story. I continued from where I stopped.
"After contemplating for some time and reaching a final agreement, we decided that it would be better and safer if we involved the police. So, I called the detective and asked him to come over to the house. Fast forward to when they came, Detective Jide was the one who opened it and found that there was nothing there..."
Eddy cut in instantly "You mean there was nothing in the basket after everything? He asked totally confused.
"You have to wait to hear the whole story. I am not even finished yet, come on."
"Oh, okay. Sorry about that, please go on." Eddy said, shifting from his chair.
"Yeah. As I was saying, before you interrupted. I think it was Sonia's mom that saw it."
"Saw what? Eddy interjected so intrigued this time.
I frowned at him and signaled him to wait and stop cutting me off again, till I am done. He nodded and asked that I went on with what I was saying. I cleared my throat and started again.
"Sonia's mom got out a white paper and I took it and read it. Now, guess what was inside that paper? If you get it, I promise I'd give you a thousand dollar right now." I said sincerely, knowing fully that his getting the correct answer is slim to nothing.
"A thousand dollar. Hmmmm. Okay, I will try. How many times do I have to try it? How many chances do I have? Eddy asked, buying into the bet game.
"Just two." I answered.
"Okay okay. Uhm, inside the white is a picture of him and a man? That was why you concluded that she has been cheating in you. Right? He said, in a way to get a confirmation from me.
"That was wrong. You have one more chance to make an attempt." I said, enjoying the drama a little bit.
"Okay okay. One more chance. Uhm... You saw a pregnancy test result? He said excitedly and smiling like he had gotten the right answer.
I shook my head negatively and replied to him. "Eddy, that wasn't what I saw. Though, I must confess that your guesses were not bad at all."
"Alright alright, I give up. So tell me, what exactly did you see? Eddy asked now impatient.
"Eddy." I paused a bit trying to catch my breathe as what I was about to say was too heavy for my mouth to spill out.
Finally, after composing myself, after I had gathered enough courage that I needed, I spoke up.
"I saw a DNA test result. Eddy, I saw a DNA test result inside that." I said in a pained tone, though forcing myself not to shed a tear.
"A DNA test result, of whom? He asked, still perplexed. Then, realising what I just said, he almost jumped with a start. "Alex, gosh. Don't tell me you are talking about the twins? He asked in a very shocked mood, eyes opened so wide that he was almost drooling.
I nodded slowly as regards the question he just asked me. I wasn't myself anymore and I was trying to be okay. I was in deep pain and only could feel what I was feeling inside of me at that moment.
Eddy almost went mad for the moment. So I gave him the look of, "yeah, I told you so."
"Oh my goodness! Marvin and Marcela, damn. Those sweet beautiful kids aren't yours? That's so crazy. Eddy said.
"Exactly, it is crazy. That was the reason I didn't want to talk about it. I am confused right now. I can't believe Sonia could do that to me." I added, feeling very downcast.
Eddy held my hand briefly, "Alex, that's not the end of the world for you though. So please, don't let it eat you up." He advised.
"Yeah, I know. I'm trying so hard, so so hard not to think about it at least, but it's so painful. My heart aches, I still can't believe it. A part of me hates her already, like a very deep hatred seriously. But, another part of me still longs for her and thinks that she still can't do that to me. But then, it's all evident. It's clear and open and there is no denying of that."
"Calm down man. It's gonna be alright. Here am I complaining about my situation, gosh! We will sort this out, okay."
"I just hope we do so. But then, how will we start sorting all of these out? Is it even possible?
"Yes Alex. It is, very and highly possible. I believe, yeah. Someone once told me, everything that pose as a problem always has a solution."
I smiled. "You are using my words on me right?
"Yeah, maybe. But first of all, let's go find a place where we can lay our head for tonight. We have a long day tomorrow."
