Chapter 16 Shadow of The Past

“Vin, where are you?” Milea woke up from her sleep. She looked around, there was no one in the hospital room.
Milea began to feel uncomfortable in the hospital. Her every move was being closely monitored, and the nurses who came into her room felt unfamiliar, as if they weren't just ordinary medical personnel. Her instincts told her there was danger lurking.
“Who are they?” muttered Milea. She had to be wary of strangers.
“Excuse me, is my husband here?” she asked the nurse.
“No, Madam,” the nurse replied.
Milea didn't ask any more questions. She knew Vincent was probably very busy out there. She would wait for him, if necessary she would stay up late into the night.
That night, when the hospital seemed quiet, a man snuck into her room. Milea was startled, about to scream, but he quickly put his hand over her mouth.
“Calm down, Milea. I'm here to help you,” he whispered.
Milea looked at him warily. “Ryuga?”
The man smiled faintly. “Yes. Your cousin came to rescue you.”
Milea smiled sarcastically in response. “The last time I met you, you took me hostage. I don't trust you anymore.”
“That was then, not anymore. My father will protect you from Lorenzo,” Ryuga said reassuringly.
“How?” Milea wanted to know.
“Follow me!” Ryuga diverted. “You'll find out later.”
“So, what about Vin?” Milea considered.
“Right now, your safety is more important. Vin is now Lorenzo's accomplice. My father won't let his niece be on the enemy's side.”
“Hurry up, take whatever you can carry, we don't have much time. Before they realise,” Ryuga ordered. Inevitably, Milea complied.
Before Milea could process the information, the sound of footsteps approached. Ryuga deftly pulled her out of bed, then he opened the window and guided Milea to escape. They were almost caught by two men in black uniforms who had just entered the room.
Ryuga hissed, “Don't make a sound! They can hear.”
Milea nodded. Her hand was still clasped tightly with Ryuga's.
Breathless, Milea ran after Ryuga through the dark hallways of the hospital. They made it out of the building and into a waiting car.
As the car travelled at high speed, Milea began to feel a sense of unease. “Why should I trust you?” she asked sharply.
Ryuga remained focused on the road. “Because my father doesn't want you to die. As his son, of course I have to save you from them.”
That answer wasn't enough to convince Milea. Something wasn't right. She wasn't satisfied with her cousin's answer.

Meanwhile, Vincent was still struggling with the system on his computer screen. He had to be able to face a more horrifying reality. During his investigation, he found shocking evidence that his father was not only Lorenzo's partner, but also the brain behind the formation of a secret organisation that was now the biggest threat in the underground world.
“Secret organisation? What does this mean?” Vincent didn't understand. He continued to browse the system, data after data he had found while in Italy a few days ago.
The photographs, secret documents and voice recordings Vincent finds at Alessandro Morreti's residence reveal a truth he never expected. His father had designed this global crime system decades ago.
“My father was involved from the beginning. No wonder they're after me now. Damn it!” cursed Vincent with a grunt of annoyance.
Vincent's blood rushed. If that was true, then he had been part of a much bigger game all along. He had been indirectly involved in it.
And perhaps, Vincent was too late to get out of this vortex.
Suddenly, an encrypted message appeared on his laptop screen. It contained only one line.
[You are not alone. Trust me.]
Vincent stiffened. Who sent this? And is this a sign of hope, or a deeper trap?

Arriving at Uncle Peter's (Nakamura) guest house, Milea discovers something surprising: a large map full of intricate connections between various criminal organisations. However, the most shocking thing is Vincent's name right in the centre, circled in red as his uncle's target.
Milea was stunned, her hands trembling. “Uncle, what does all this mean...?” she murmured softly.
Suddenly, Ryuga arrived with a fresh drink for Milea. He looked at her with an unpredictable look in his eyes. “Vincent is not just a victim, Milea. He's the key to everything.”
“The key to everything?” repeated Milea. “Explain it to me so I can understand!”
“Yes, his father created the forbidden organisation with Lorenzo. Now you know the reason, right, why Vincent went to Italy in the first place?” Ryuga explained.
“So, that's why.” Milea nodded. Ryuga nodded firmly.
Before Milea could react, a loud bang was heard outside. They had been discovered. And this time, there was nowhere to hide.
“Milea, get down!” said Ryuga as he secured Milea.
“What happened?” Milea was in a panic.
“Lorenzo's men found us. They realised you weren't in the hospital anymore. They've been following us since the hospital.”
“So, what should we do now?”
“I'll find a way to trick them. For now, you stay here and I'll distract them,” Ryuga suggested.
In a family guest house in a remote suburban village, Milea and Ryuga were trapped. Outside, the sound of footsteps sounded closer and closer. Lorenzo's men had discovered their whereabouts.
“They've surrounded us,” Milea hissed, looking at Ryuga warily.
Ryuga drew his gun, his eyes calculatingly sharp. “We have to get out before they get inside.”
DOR! DOR! DOR!
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, shattering the sturdy window glass. Milea crouched down and covered her ears, her heart racing. Ryuga moved quickly, pulling her to the corner of the room.
“We can go out the back door,” Ryuga whispered. “But we have to be careful.”
The front door was banged loudly. They didn't have much time.
Elsewhere, Vincent threw his phone to the floor. His eyes widened when he saw the screen showing the hospital's CCTV footage. Milea's bed was empty.
“Shit!” he growled, his fist pounding the table.
Milea had disappeared. And Vincent knew he had to find her before Lorenzo did first.
“Is this all Ryuga's doing?” Vincent asked.
