CHAPTER XVI ♡

A Day in the Life of a Doctor under Public Scrutiny.....
Meinny woke up to the soft, golden light filtering through her window, a welcome contrast to the storm of emotions swirling in her mind. It had been a few weeks since news of her relationship with Jay had gone viral, and the scrutiny that followed felt suffocating. Yet, she had a duty—both to her patients and to herself. As a doctor, her commitment to her profession ran deep, and she needed to focus on that today.
She got out of bed, splashed water on her face, and took a deep breath. The challenges of the day ahead awaited her, but she couldn’t afford to let the public’s gaze distract her from the lives she was meant to touch. After a quick breakfast, she donned her white coat, a symbol of her dedication, and grabbed her medical bag.
Morning Shift at the Hospital.....
Arriving at the hospital, Meinny was greeted by the familiar hustle and bustle of the emergency department. The smell of antiseptic filled the air, mixed with the sounds of nurses calling out patient names and the distant echo of gurneys being wheeled in. Despite the chaos, a sense of purpose surged within her. She navigated through the busy corridors, exchanging friendly nods and smiles with her colleagues.
Her first patient of the day was an elderly man named Mr. Han, who had been admitted for chest pain. As she reviewed his chart, she could feel the weight of the day’s challenges looming. “Good morning, Mr. Han. How are you feeling today?” she asked, her voice warm and reassuring.
“I’m a bit anxious, Doctor,” he replied, his eyes reflecting worry. “It’s all this talk on the news about you and that celebrity. It’s hard to focus on my health.”
Meinny took a deep breath. “I understand it can be distracting, but let’s focus on you. You are my priority right now,” she said, gently placing her hand on his. She conducted a thorough examination, reassuring him with every step. The interaction reminded her of why she became a doctor in the first place—to care for people, to listen to their concerns, and to alleviate their fears.
After finishing with Mr. Han, she moved on to a series of consultations and rounds, each encounter an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. However, the whispers in the hallway about her relationship lingered in her mind. Colleagues offered sympathetic glances, some of them even asking about her well-being. “Are you okay, Meinny? I saw the news,” one nurse said softly.
“I’m managing, thanks,” she replied, though she felt the weight of the scrutiny in every glance.
Lunch Break.....
Lunchtime offered a brief respite, a moment to gather her thoughts. She headed to the hospital’s small cafeteria, hoping for a quiet corner. As she sipped her coffee, she noticed a group of young doctors at a nearby table, their conversation filled with laughter. For a moment, she longed to join in, to forget the pressures outside her professional life. But as she reached for her phone, the notifications flooded in—messages from friends, family, and fans, all weighing on her.
“Hey, Meinny! You okay?” her friend Clara texted.
“I’m fine. Just a bit overwhelmed,” she replied, putting the phone down. She couldn’t let this consume her.
After lunch, she returned to her rounds. Each patient reminded her of her purpose. She met with a mother who had just given birth, offering guidance and support, and later she attended to a young boy with a severe asthma attack. These moments provided a balm for her frayed nerves, a reminder that her work truly mattered.
Afternoon Shift.....
In the afternoon, the hospital buzzed with activity. Meinny’s phone vibrated again, this time with a notification from a news outlet featuring an article about her. It was difficult to escape the invasive nature of the media, and she felt a pang of frustration. Shaking her head, she pushed the thoughts aside and focused on her duties.
As she stepped into the pediatrics ward, she was greeted by the cheerful giggles of children, a stark contrast to the seriousness of her earlier cases. She approached a little girl named Siti, who was recovering from a minor surgery. “How are you feeling today, Siti?” Meinny asked, kneeling beside her bed.
“I’m okay, but I want to go home,” Siti pouted, her eyes wide and hopeful.
Meinny smiled gently. “I know it’s hard, but let’s make sure you’re all better first. Do you want to draw with me?” she suggested, pulling out some colored pencils from her bag.
The girl’s face lit up, and for the next hour, they drew together, creating colorful masterpieces. This small act of kindness reminded Meinny that amidst the chaos, there were still moments of joy to be found in her work.
Evening Reflections.....
As the day wound down, Meinny found a moment of solitude in the hospital’s rooftop garden, a hidden gem that provided a brief escape from the hectic pace of the hospital. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the city. She took a deep breath, allowing the cool evening air to wash over her.
Closing her eyes, she thought about the challenges she faced, both personally and professionally. The public scrutiny felt relentless, but she realized that the love and support from her family and friends grounded her. They believed in her, and that mattered more than the noise outside.
She pulled out her phone to check messages again, noticing a video posted by Jay. He spoke about their relationship, expressing his admiration for her strength and dedication as a doctor. Hearing his words brought a smile to her face, a reminder that they were in this together.
Returning Home.....
Finally leaving the hospital, Meinny felt a mix of exhaustion and fulfillment. She arrived home to find her apartment peaceful, a sanctuary from the chaos outside. She made herself a simple dinner, replaying the day’s events in her mind. Each patient, each interaction, reinforced her commitment to her work.
As she sat on her couch, her phone buzzed again—this time with a video call from Jay. His face appeared on the screen, and she felt an immediate rush of warmth.
“Hey, how was your day?” he asked, his voice soothing.
“It was busy, but good. I had a lot of patients who needed care,” she replied, smiling.
“I saw some of the news coverage. You handled it like a pro,” he said, admiration evident in his eyes.
“Thanks, but it’s not easy. Sometimes I just want to shut it all out,” she admitted, running her fingers through her hair.
“I get that. Just remember, you’re doing incredible work. People look up to you for a reason,” he reassured her.
Their conversation drifted from serious topics to lighthearted banter, the weight of the world lifting as they laughed together. In those moments, Meinny felt a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos.
A New Day Ahead.....
As she prepared for bed, Meinny reflected on the day. Despite the challenges, she had made a difference in her patients’ lives, and that was what mattered most. The scrutiny of the public would continue, but she would face it with the same strength she brought to her medical practice.
In the days that followed, Meinny found herself more resolute. Each morning she awoke, she reminded herself of her purpose—to heal, to care, and to inspire. The love of her family, friends, and Jay bolstered her, providing the strength to face whatever lay ahead.
As she drifted off to sleep, she felt a sense of hope. The world outside might be watching, but inside her heart, she knew she was exactly where she was meant to be—a doctor dedicated to making a difference, one patient at a time.
