Chapter 31 His fear
Amari
Nathan’s interview with Lione is a whole hour with over million views.
“That’s my bestie! Tell them! We going to kick and sue their butts!”
I only stare at Mrs Gail. She is so excited, she has even folded up her sleeves as if ready for a fight. This old woman is really crazy.
“What did Ella say about me to make Nathan so angry?” I ask her. Nathan is clearly shielding me and telling his crazy bestie everything.
“That witch is busy…” she hesitates and shake her head.
“Mrs Gail,” I urge.
“You are pregnant. Don’t worry about that wicked woman.”
“I am pregnant not a fragile antique!” I snap at her and quickly suck a ginger lollipop one of the maids gave me when nausea hit me.
“You and my heir are the most fragile, and treasured antiques I will ever have,”Nathan declares while I roll my eyes at him.
“You do realise that I will eventually hear what Ella was saying, right?”
Surely, he can’t hide this forever. I am certain that any of our church members would tell if I called them and asked.
“I will give you the best surprise of your life if you don’t listen to it,”he tries to negotiate, piquing my curiosity more.
“Nathan Lord, are you bribing me?”
He chuckles and declares. “I love you, Mrs Lord.”
“I know that.”
“More than you will ever know. I am also terrified of losing you,” he says with a serious tone that pulls at my heart strings.
“Nathan,” I call to him softly.
“I did not deserve you when we got married. I am terrified that all this drama might send you running. I just…”
“You won’t,” I interject. I have been selfishly trying to get him to agree for us to return to our apartment that I ignored the fact that this change can’t be easy to him too. I feel terrible that I might have made him feel insecure about us.
“I told you that she loves you too much for that,” Mrs Gail jumps in.
Nathan lets out a sigh before picking the remote and turning on the television. I am not surprised that I am on the breaking news. I silently watch while he hugs me from behind.
Not only am I a loose woman who slept around with wealthy men for money, I have also had a multiple abortions. I, apparently did my first abortion when I was only fifteen years old. The most interesting and most talked about is the one I apparently had three years ago. My very considerable, loving and kind cousin apparently let me use her medical insurance.
“I know that it was wrong and fraudulent of me to let Amari use my insurance, but she was going to do it anyway. I just wanted her to have it done safely at the hospital by trained personnel,” my very teary cousin tells the sympathetic journalist. “Michael must have found out about it and thought it was me.”
Ella starts weeping when asked about Nathan. Apparently Micheal and I ganged up to break her and Nathan up. She even brings up the fifth grade when Nathan and I were paired up for a science project. I apparently tried to seduce Nathan back then and slipped and broke my arm while trying to kill her.
I can only shake my head at it all. She told Nathan that I broke my arm trying to go to a boy. I guess her current scenario makes me more of a whore than what she said before. I am now the witch that is acting like a victim and turning Nathan against her. She has the journalist wrapped around her little finger because none of them question a thing she says. Just this morning she was telling them that she is returning everything her parents stole from me, yet I am also this evil force that has destroyed her happily ever after with Nathan.
“I am going to squeeze the life out of that witch, so help me God!” Mrs Gail swears. She is so pumped up right now, while I am just disappointed at how someone can fabricate so many lies about me and the media just let her.
Nathan plants a kiss on my forehead when I turn to face him. Now I understand why he was so angry. Everything he said in his interview completely contradicts what Ella said about me. The evidence and video’s were all evidence to call Ella out on her lies and vindicate me.
“After today, I swear to you that no one will spew nonsense about you,” he vows right before his phone beeps.
“It’s my lawyer. I have to take this,” he tells me before taking the call.
I slouch on the couch and listen to his conversation.
“Sue them all. I want every single one of them bankrupt.”
I don’t know what the lawyer says but Nathan’s answer is. “Bring in the whole firm and get me the best. Money is not a problem. I want it done today.”
“Whom exactly are you suing and bankrupting?” I ask him when he gets off the phone.
“Social media trolls, journalists, media houses, everyone,” its Mrs Gail who answers. I don’t know why she is so excited about this. Some people are just stupid and naive. A warning might be enough.
“That’s a bit extreme. People are going to lose their jobs and…” I try to object but Nathan cuts me off.
“And nothing. They made a mistake of messing with my wife. Babe, I am never going to tolerate any disrespect towards you. Never.”
“You do know that the media houses are going to wash their hands off this and throw individual journalists under the buss instead, right?” I ask him. This is always the case. They will issue an apology and fire the journalist, despite the fact that many editors and senior members approved the whole thing before it’s aired.
“I know. I also know that I won’t win against the media houses themselves, but I will drag them to court until they are bankrupt. No other media house is ever going to hire those journalists ever again.”
“Nathan,” I call to him softly. I am glad that he is protecting me, but this is also going to cost him a lot of money too.
“Babe, you are not going to be Mrs Spencer. I would rather lose everything than lose you,” he says with a shaky voice and I fully get him now. All along I thought he was afraid that I might leave him, but it’s more than that.
Lucy Spencer was a quiet girl from a small town who kept to herself. No one knew anything about her until she got married to one of the country’s illegible bachelor’s. She was dragged down by the media and social media trolls until she was depressed and ended up committing suicide.
“I know how much you value your privacy, Amari. I also know how much you love your community. You are going to live your life the way you want. I will destroy anyone and everything who threatens that because I want to make you happy.”
I can only nod my head and bury it on his chest.
“Ready to go home?” he asks after a few minutes of me clinging to him.
I look up at him. I thought he would want us to stay here until all this is sorted.
“I have a surprise for you at home,” he adds.
The way he says this makes me feel like an impatient little girl.
“Please, give me a clue,” I urge when he insists on opening the door for me and putting on my seatbelt.
“Okay, let’s see. I am going to be the best man you have ever met.”
“That’s not a clue, Nathan. You are already that.”
“Best husband ever then?”
I roll my eyes. “Already that.”
“Wow. Im quite impressive. Let’s see. I will be the love of your life,” he says wittily.
“Nathan!”
He is intentionally raising my curiosity and enjoying it.
“Patience dear. It’s a virtue,” trust Mrs Gail to say this.
“Easy for you to say. He tells you everything,” I complain before turning to my amused husband. “Keep up with this and I won’t tell you when the baby starts kicking,” I threaten and he makes a puppy face.
“Babe.”
“Don’t worry, Nathan, she will,” Mrs Gail contradicts me.
“Mrs Gail!”
“What? You love him,” she says defensively.
“Well, he loves me too, yet he is keeping secrets from me,” I point out.
This friendship of theirs is getting on my nerves now. I as always outnumbered. Maybe I should get myself a close friend too.
“It’s for your own good. You should know by now that everything he does is for your own good,” Mrs Gail says with certainty.
“Well, I don’t like everything he does for my own good.”
Nathan raises his eyebrows and curls his lips. He is enjoying this.
“You did not call me when James assaulted you and you did not tell me when he did it again,” I remind him. I have no doubt that everything he does is for my own good but sometimes it’s decremental to him.
“This time, it’s all good. I promise. Trust me.”
“Fine,” I concede and my jaw drops when we arrive…Download Novelah App
