Chapter 36 Family

Nathan
The next church service is quiet and back to old times. The old women who were flirting with me before, are quite funny now. They give me, or rather Frank witty winks because they are the select few who know who I am.
The following day Amari and I head to the hospital for the appointment we have with the gynaecologist and find the consulting rooms packed with our friends.
“Seriously?” Amari asks, giving me an unimpressed look.
“I only told Mrs Gail, I swear.”
“You might as well call the journalists for a media briefing,” she says and rolls her eyes.
“I only told Malcom, Sister Grace and Sister Harvey,” Mrs Gail tries to defend herself. “Why am I even explaining myself? We also want to see the baby,” she adds while I laugh. I really do love my family of crazy old men and women.
“How exactly are you all going to fit into the examination room?” Amari asks and Mrs Gail waves her hand dismissively.
“Don’t worry about that. Nathan owns this hospital and the nice lady here has organised the biggest examination room they have. Leah will live scream everything to others at home,” Mrs Gail’s response makes me look guilty.
“Did you not think I should know about this, considering I am the one getting examined?” Amari asks and they all shake their heads while I laugh. She shoots me a deadly stare. She thinks I was in on this but I really was not.
“Come on, Love. This is what family does,” I try to soften my wife, who huffs, but she can never send them away and they know it.
The doctor is just as shocked and amused at the number of old men and women in the examination room. She patiently takes all of us through the shades we see on the ultrasound. I feel sorry for her because Brother Malcom can’t hear much and Brother Aaron can’t see well.
“Is that the leg?”Brother Aaron asks. I have no idea what he was looking at before when the doctor showed us the baby’s arms and head, because he is pointing at the doctor’s arm, very far from the ultrasound screen.
“No, Aron, that is the nice doctor’s arm,” Mrs Gail explains. It’s taking everything in me not to laugh. I am sure that this is going to be the longest consultation the doctor ever had.
“Maybe you should see an eye specialist while we are here,” I tease because I know how terrified of the cataract extraction operation he is supposed to have.
He wiggles his nose at me and does not respond.
“Is it a girl or boy?” he asks the doctor instead.
“I think it’s a girl,” I don’t know who responds and a full blown debate begins on what they think the gender of the baby is.
“Amari is glowing. It’s definitely a girl,”Sister White says with certainty.
“She’s always glowing around her husband. It does not mean it’s a girl,” someone objects.
“True. We can bet on it then. A thousand dollars for the winners. Who says it’s a boy?”
“We are Christians, we don’t bet,” Isaac reminds everyone.
“Well, we do. We just don’t tell you, Brother Isaac,” trust Mrs Gail to say this. Now everyone is looking at her in disbelief.
“What? You all play Lottery. You, Sister…”
“Mrs Gail,” Amari interjects, cutting her off before she starts naming people. “You do your own confession and leave others out,” she adds firmly and I see relieved expressions.
“Should I tell you the gender?” the doctor asks, amused and they all nod.
“She is asking me and Nathan,” Amari reminds them while they laugh at her. It is safe to say that this baby is not only ours.
“We have a girl!” the doctor beams and cheers fill the room. I hold my wife’s hands and squeeze it when the heart beat booms on the ultrasound.
“Our princess,” I murmur and plant a kiss on my wife’s forehead.
“All is well with the princess. I will send the ultrasound images and the audio recording of the heart beat to you this afternoon, Sir,” the doctor says.
“Not only them, us too.”
I don’t know who says this, but they all agree.
The doctor looks around the room, most likely trying to figure out just how many people she is going to send to.
“I will forward everything to Leah and she will send it to all of you,” I jump in and the doctor lets out a sigh of relief.
We are at the corridor with everyone looking curiously at us when Brother Aron decides to have that surgery after all.
“Really? Now?” I ask him and he nods.
“Okay. We will be by your side,” Amari declares but I am curious about his timing. He refused to have the surgery for over five years. I spoke to him for more than an hour last week and he still refused.
“I want to see the baby images. I want to see her properly when she arrives, not the shadows I am seeing,”he explains and I feel bad for him.
The eye clinic is just as shocked when we all arrive. Luckily, it’s not a major surgery that he requires. The doctor is happy to do it now. It helps that I own the hospital.
We all sit around the waiting room when Brother Aaron is taken to a day theatre.
“Wendy Lord is a good name for the baby,” Mrs Gail declares while my wife giggles, leaving me to deal with my bestie because we have already decided on girl and boy names.
“Why your name? Jennet is also a good name,” Sister Smith objects.
“Those are old names. Leah is perfect,” Leah jumps in and gets unimpressed looks. She is the youngest in this group.
“Precious Pearl Lord are her names. She’s named after my and Amari’s mother,” I tell them and they melt. My people are just a delight to be with.
“Oh, that’s perfect,” they all beam. At least that is dealt with.
“I am obviously the godmother,” Mrs Gail starts and I can hear another debate coming.
“You are all godmothers and godfathers. Happy?” Amari shouts preemptively.
“Oh, Dear. Pregnancy hormones are toying with you.”
Amari is about to object when my bestie takes her favourite snack and offers them to her.
“Want salt and vinegar chips?”
Amari’s yes sparkle as she munches on her snack. She loves these chips and my bestie knows how to get away with mischief.
“And that is why I am the greatest godmother of all,” she brags right before a nervous nurse approaches us. My wife is the first to get on her feet.
“Is everything fine with Brother Aron?”
