Chapter 37 Past skeletons

Nathan
The nurse hesitates, making all of us panic.
“Is everything okay?” I ask her.
“He wants you to sing for him and your wife to hold his hand during the procedure,” the nurse blurts out.
“You should have just said that and not raise my blood pressure for nothing,” Mrs Gail scolds the nurse, who seems relieved.
“For…forgive me. I…I thought Mr Lord would be infuriated by the request,” she explains herself. They all look at her like she is crazy, but I get her. In her eyes I am filthy rich and rich people don’t have time for such. The old rich me would never had time.
I flash her a smile. “Brother Aron is family. We do anything for family,” I say and led my wife to the procedure room.
“Tell him he is such a cry baby!” Mrs Gail shouts. Others must have looked at her funny because I hear her response afterwards. “What? It’s only a cataract removal and he wants to be held and sung to.”
We find brother Aron on the stretcher with the doctor ready to start. The nurse pulls out chairs for us to sit next to him.
“Don’t get used to holding my wife’s hand, old man,” I warm and he laughs at me while Amari shakes her head.
“I want you to sing the amazing grace, then it is well with my soul after that. You sing anything after that. Don’t stop until this is done.”
The doctor and the nurse exchange amused looks while Amari’s shoulders shake as she suppresses her laugh.
“When exactly did I become your private entertainer, old man?”
“Well, you love me. You will do anything for me.”
“So cocky. I will just take my wife and leave.”
He laughs loudly while I shake my head at just how much faith he has on my love for him. He and everyone out there is proof of just how meaningful and full my life has become. I plant a kiss on my wife’s forehead. This is all because she loved me unconditionally when I was supposedly nothing.
“On a serious note, aged friend, it is an honour to be by your side,” I tell him as the medical team position themselves to begin. The procedure is really fast.
“What?” I finally ask. My wife has been giving me suspicious looks the whole time I was singing.
“You never sing Amazing grace like that in the choir. I will tell Leah that you have been robbing us,” she threatens while I laugh.
“I joined the choir when you had already chosen the tune, remember?”
“Still, you are a scammer, Brother Lord!”
“It is husband to you,” I correct and she rolls her eyes, while the medical staff laugh.
“That was beautiful, Sir,” the doctor says and the nurse nods in agreement.
“Most of our patients are old. I think they would love to have someone sing to them as they go through this procedure,” the doctor proceeds while I give him knowing look, guessing what is coming.
“Everything we do here is recorded. Would you mind if we played the footage for the nervous ones. We can also play it during the procedure?”
I can’t help but laugh. I already had a negative response ready because there is no way I can be here everyday.
“It is your hospital and the patients will really appreciate it,” the nurse adds, trying to twist my hand.
“That is a good suggestion,” my wife beams and it is decided.
We walk out forty-five minutes later to find the big screen by the reception waiting room already playing the footage.
“Brother Lord!”
I momentarily close my eyes and embrace myself for Leah’s retribution.
“Oh, I don’t have to report you, she heard and saw it herself,” my wife teases. I am never going to hear the end of this.
A few days later, Brother Aron is over the moon. His eyesight is perfect. He is so emotional about his house and others. We are all worried about his exerting himself before he just can’t sit still. He is either walking around the estate or running around with children.
A week later, I am out of town for business when I get a call from Isaac.
“Have you seen what’s on social media?” he asks the moment I respond.
“What’s going on?” I can’t help but be worried. Isaac is always calm, but he sounds shaken.
“You need to look at Ella’s status. It’s bad,” he says and I am already irritated. That shameless woman writes me open letters on a daily basis. Now that I dealt with all the journalists who were her friends, she has no other avenue and posting all her madness on social media. She posts every gift, trip and every stupid loving thing I have ever said to her. I can’t help but gag at just how stupid I once was. I don’t bother responding to anything she posts, but this time must be different if Isaac is this worried.
I log on and my heart sinks. The social media is already buzzing because she has dug up old messages I wrote to her. It must have been during our many arguments about her insecurities, this one was, unfortunately, about Amari. It was ages ago. I could not even remember when Amari told me that I kissed her back at school. Ella has posted the messages I wrote before declaring that I am and always be hers. I cant help but flinch as I read what I said about Amari. I was really an ass back then.
“Hi, Babe. Please answer my calls. How can you trip about that loose gold-digger cousin of yours? Do you think I am so desperate to even like a woman like that? I mean, she is nothing and disgusting. How can you think I would cheat on you with a non-stater like that? I am yours, Ella, always.”
It is freezing outside but my brow starts dripping sweat and my hands get clammy at the thought of my wife seeing all this. I grab my briefcase and head out. I need to see my wife.
