Chapter 38 Predictable

Amari
I can safely say I am the happiest woman alive. I have very crazy and protective family and a loving husband.   Everything about Nathan melts me. He does not have to say anything. I catch him ogling me on multiple occasions. I feel and look like a balloon every day, but he thinks I am hot.
I wake up feeling more tired than usual. I am told that is part of pregnancy. It’s just after seven in the morning and I am yawning like I did not sleep.
Nathan chuckles. He finds everything I do amusing.
“One of those days, huh?”
I roll my eyes. He thinks he knows me better than I know myself.
“I will order a massage for you. I think Janet is around.”
Janet is Paul’s girlfriend who has is a massage therapist. She does a lot of house calls, especially in our estate.
“For your daughter or me?”
He grins at my question before pulling me in his arms and passionately kisses me. We are both breathless by the time he breaks off the kiss and gazes at me.
“You are my queen. My life, my everything.”
Argh. My husband is just perfect. Now I am blushing and he has that victorious smile on his gorgeous face as he gets ready for work. He usually lazes around with me, but he has a business meeting out of town today.
“See you later, Mrs Lord. Feed my Princess. Those salty chips and vinegar are not food.”
I stick my tongue out at him. His princess is the reason I am craving those yummy chips. My mouth start watering at the thought of that taste. I must have them now.
He laughs, and takes out a packet from his briefcase. I am starting to think he carries them everywhere. He laughs and gives it to me. I am becoming too predictable.
I munch on the snacks before heading back to bed, only to be woken up two hours later by Janet.
“Morning, Darling. Nathan said you needed pampering. I have just what you need!” she beams with that melodic voice of hers. She is very hospitable and good at this stuff. I am not surprised that she is the most talked about massage therapist in town.
“Thanks for coming, J. How’s my brother?”
“Paul is fine. How’s the baby?”
Her quick change of subject takes me aback. Maybe she and Paul had a fight. They have been fighting a lot lately, mostly because Paul is now an illegible bachelor and our youth are crazy about him.
“The baby is fine. I swear she is a celebrity already. Everyone calls just to know if she’s fine,” I lament and she laughs.
Even though still friendly, she is a bit too quiet for my liking today. It must be hard doing her work and expected to be jovial when not happy about something.
“I will talk to Paul about his groupies, okay?”
She flashes me a smile and sets up for my full massage. I feel so refreshed that I have decided to pamper my husband to a full course meal I plan to make from scratch today.
I am about to attempt making the lemon tart recipe I found on line when Leah arrives.
“Are you okay?” She asks, and I nod. I bet Mrs Gail sent her to come spy on me for her bestie.
“Tell Mrs Gail to tell Nathan that I am fine and his child is fine too. Tell him that I have eaten food as he suggested.”
Leah giggles before becoming serious.
“Have you seen what’s on social media?”
I frown at her. I don’t like social media because Ella always happens. All she does these days is write all sort of stuff about Nathan. She’s obsessed with him.
“This one is about you,” she tells me and I laugh.
“It always is.”
Ella writes about Nathan, but the conclusion is always about how I stole him from her.
“It’s kind of different this time.”
Leah’s cautious words pique my curiosity. I stop what crushing the biscuits and find myself reading the status I made a conscious decision never to bother with. I quietly read Ella’s post of Nathan’s messages, but I can’t concentrate. My eyes and nostrils are suddenly watery. I wonder if this is part of pregnancy.
“I am sorry. He is a different man now.”
I want to say something, but I feel so dizzy and drained. Before I know it, I am on the couch surrounded by every old and young woman in the estate.
Leah panicked when I almost fell, and called about everyone. My stupid tears are just flowing and the nose is following suit. I have to wipe my eyes and blow my nose every second. It does not matter how many times I blow my nose and dry my eyes, it’s just getting worse and I can feel a headache coming.
“Brother Lord is a changed man, Dear. That was before he became the man of God,” Sister Harvey says and everyone nods.
They all think I am crying because of that status, but something is wrong with me.
“I know that. Can I go to the hospital now?”
“You said the baby was fine,” Mrs Gail points out.
“I am telling you that something is wrong with me!” I snap because I have been trying to tell them that I am not crying. It is not helping that the stupid tears keep coming and my eyes are just stinging.
“It is okay to admit that you are angry, Dear. We just want you to understand that your husband is a different man from that person who wrote those hurtful things,” Sister White jumps in.
“I know that. Is anyone listening to me!” Now I am really angry because they are not listening and I really feel sick.
“We can’t let you go anywhere upset like this. How about you wait until Nathan gets here?” Mrs Gail asks but it’s more like a command. I don’t bother responding or talking to any of them.
I now have a pounding headache and my whole body is aching. I force my stinging eyes to close and try to shut them out, but I can still hear Mrs Gail. She is pacing up and down and cursing Ella nonstop.
“Shameless Jezebel. I am going to break her anorexic neck. Little witch!”
I want to scream out when they start arguing about if it’s Christian like to want to break Ella’s neck or not.
“Fine, I will pray that she gets run over by a train. Happy?” Mrs Gail yells.
“I have a headache. Can you just keep your voices down?” I yell and it’s quiet for a moment, but my mouth is now watering. There is definitely something wrong with me.
It is an hour later when Nathan rushes in, all flustered. I can only imagine what they have told him.
He kneels down next to coach and embraces me.
“Babe, I am so sorry. Please…”
“Take me to the hospital,” I manage to whisper before everything becomes completely blank.
