Chapter 40 Ground zero
Nathan
My life is a complete mess and my head is spinning.
“Who the hell would use a biological warfare weapon on my wife?”
It is now clear that my wife is patient zero and everyone who was around her got poisoned. No one can explain how. Amari has no enemies. I just can’t understand why anyone would do this.
“We are trying to find that out, Mr Lord,” the national security guy says. “Are you sure you don’t know anyone on that list?” he asks, and I shake my head. I have never seen any of the terrorists they have shown me. None of the guys and old men know them either.
“Okay. Sarin is deadly when not treated. The medical team are doing their best. We need all of you to come with us to ground zero,” one of the agents I assume is in charge says. I look at him blankly.
“The poisoning most likely happened in your estate. We need access to all the houses of the women who are poisoned,” he clarifies.
“That’s fine. I will let the security let you in.”
“We need you to come with us,” the only female agent with them clarifies. I can tell by her tone that she knows what my response will be.
“No. My wife is on a ventilator fighting for her life. I can’t leave her.”
“We understand how difficult this is, Mr Lord, but we need someone familiar with each house. Someone who will spot something that is out of place,” she responds and the rest nod.
“We all want the same thing here, Mr Lord. We have to find the scoundrel who did this, and your estate is ground zero. We need all of you here to come along to point us in the right direction.”
I nod my head and explain what the agents need from us to everyone.
“I was in the house, and I carried my wife to the hospital, but I am fine. Isaac was in the car, and he is fine,” I tell the agent as we head home.
“I don’t know, Sir. It is possible that it had worn off. We will only know when we find the mode of poisoning.”
I let out a sigh when we arrive in the estate. Everyone is already outside to make way for the agents to go through each house. I can see the terrified expressions on their faces. They saw ambulances coming in and out transporting all the women who were with Amari.
“Brother Lord.”
I turn around to find Isaac’s parents, who both embrace me.
“The good Lord will strengthen you. Everyone is praying for Amari, the baby and everyone in hospital. The Lord will never desert nor forsaken us.”
I nod at those words, thank them and head to my mansion. A few minutes later, completely covered in protective gear, I follow the agents inside. I watch them do al sorts of tests and swab every surface in my house and nothing. Not even the air has traces of the so-called sarin.
“Have you noticed anything out of place, Sir?” one of the agents asks and I shake my head. Everything here is as I left it this morning. The only thing out of place are the ingredients on the kitchen island, but they have tested all of that already.
“Okay. Now we go through the trash,” one of the agents says and I spot one the empty massage bottles.
“I need change my statement,” I tell the agents, who all look expectantly at me.
“I was wrong about Amari not having contact with anyone else besides the women in hospital. I arranged a massage therapist for her before I left.”
“Did the therapist come?”
I point at the empty bottle in the trash. “That is one of her products.”
The immediately tests the bottle. They don’t have to say it, I can tell that we have found the mode of poisoning, but why?
“Janet seemed like a good person. She adored Amari. I don’t understand why she would do this,” I tell the agents, who immediately make calls to trace Janet.
I try to call her to no avail. We head to Thomas’ house, hoping she might be there.
“Janet would never do this,” Thomas says, perplexed, but he also can’t get hold of Janet.
“All the houses are clean. This is the source of sarin. Unless someone has explanation for this, Janet is now a wanted terrorist,” the agent in charge announces. Thomas is questioned about everything. It does not help that he has a criminal record himself, the agents are now aggressive and don’t believe anything he says.
“I appreciate that you are trying to catch the culprit, but Thomas had nothing to do with this,” I eventually jump in. “I am certain,” I add.
“Okay, then. Do you mind coming with us to Janet’s house?” one the agents asks Thomas, but it is not really question, but a command.
“I will come with you,” I tell Thomas, because I can tell that they are only civil with him because I am here.
Thomas shakes his head. “No, Nathan. Amari needs you.”
“She is in good hands. You need me right now. It is what Amari would have wanted me to do,” I tell him, and he starts tearing. He acts all tough, but he has been through a lot. Not only that, he and Amari are very close and now his girlfriend might be a terrorist.
It is a quiet drive to Janet’s house. I am glad that Isaac came along.
Thomas leads the way to Janet’s door. The house looks deserted.
“Open the door,” the agent commands Thomas.
“I don’ have a key.”
“You don’t have a key to your girlfriend’s house?” he asks in disbelief.
“She never gave me, and I did not push her for it. It is hard to gain people’s trust when you have a past like mine,” Thomas explains, and I feel terribly for him. He is as clean as they come, but it’s hard for him to get over his past. I pat his back, letting him know that we are here for him.
“Back away then. Stay out until we get you,” the agent warns and instructs before kicking the door and five of then rush in with their weapons drawn out.
It is a twenty minutes later when one of them comes to get us.
“Is she there?” I ask and he shakes his head.
“Nope, but you might want to see what is in the basement.”
Isaac, Thomas and I exchange looks before we follow him inside and towards the basement.
“Good Lord!” Isaac exclaims and I am just speechless.Download Novelah App
