Chapter 9 PG-EIGHT
continuation...
Thelma could not believe what just happened. Her heart nearly gave up the ghost when she thought death was going to take her away from her daughter so early. That was a close one and who in the world was this foolish person driving like a maniac at this hour?
“Hey, moron! Are you insane!” Thelma yelled angrily at the car that just passed after almost murdering her. "Were you trying to kill me, you crazy psycho!"
As if the driver heard her words, the car came to a sudden stop and reversed with an incomparable speed. Thelma quickly scrambled away to avoid being hit for real.
“Are you mad!” She yelled again terribly vexed by the reckless driver. Thelma regained her composure and stood up from the cold ground. She made angry strides to the car and pounded on the thick glass.
The tinted window slid down revealing a brunette man with dark shades covering his eyes, his jaw strong, pointed nose, and slim lips. Though the dark interior was difficult to make out, but his face was well-lit by the surrounding street lights and Thelma couldn’t help but admire his strong attractive features. It was like seeing a masterpiece and most of her anger seemed to have floated.
“Are you alright?” He asked like he didn’t do anything and Thelma's original vexed state resurfaced.
“Do I look okay?” Thelma fumed outraged by his careless actions.
“Yeah you do to me.” He said nonchalantly and shrugged, it pained Thelma.
“Is that how to drive you, arrogant moron? What sort of bimbo head pan drives like that!” Thelma expressed her fury but he doesn't look affected by her outburst. Thelma felt angrier he was unfazed and she didn’t care that her voice was loud, she needed to put this man in his place.
“Watch your mouth woman, I have been patiently listening to you yell at me for the past five minutes.” He snarled which excited Thelma. She could see the anger on his face and it made her mood lighter.
“Then watch how you drive! You nearly killed me!” Thelma exclaimed expecting he would be concerned and apologize, well she got the opposite.
“Yeah, nearly- not like I killed you. You're here screaming at me aren't you?” He replied bluntly.
Thelma couldn’t believe her ears, was he serious? Who could have imagined the worst that might have happened if she had not turned around in time? Maybe she would have died on the spot leaving her little girl alone, with no parent to raise her, doesn’t this man care what his stupid actions might have caused? Thelma thought and her heart tightened from the thought of Ella being left alone in this cruel world.
“Whatever you stone-cold jerk! It’s useless talking to you!” Thelma gave up and ended her rage. She then went to pick up her things from the floor and continued walking her way home. Thelma uttered foul words against the man, words she never imagined she would use.
“It's useless listening to a nagging woman like you!" He shouts back. "Next time, you better watch out or you might get run over for real.” He warns her.
Thelma halted and spun around, she opened her mouth to speak but he stepped in the accelerator and zoomed off carelessly.
“Stupid simpleton .” She muttered.

A few moments...
Thelma reached her simple house and opened the door, she climbed the stairs at the front but it was dark inside and the theme song of a cartoon played from upstairs ‘Ella's is still up’ Thelma thought and hung her coat then locked the door behind her.
“I’m home!” She yelled for Ella.
The song stopped followed by footsteps running from above, Ella emerged from the stairs and froze, her eyes wide, mouth hanging slightly low with a half-eaten Nutella sandwich in one hand. “You’re back early!” She whispered but it was loud enough for Thelma to hear. It sounded more like an exclamation than a question.
“Yes, isn’t that what you wanted?” Thelma asked her daughter, not expecting that kind of reaction from her.
“Yeah- but you still work at the Sweet Dreams Hotel right?” Ella cautiously asked and Thelma gave her a puzzled look.
“Yes, gosh Ella did you do something to your head.” Thelma joked.
“No, I thought-” Ella paused and passed her mother a toothy grin. “It’s good to have you back.” She said and stepped down to hug Thelma. Thelma returned the embrace, and they were like that for a short moment until something snapped in Thelma.
“What were you doing upstairs and why is there a Nutella sandwich in your hand.” She confronts her daughter. Ella unhooked herself from her mother, her eyes searching everywhere but her.
“I.. umm.. you are not sure it is Nutella.” She defended.
“I know what it is and I can smell it.” Thelma replied.
“Fine, I didn’t want to sleep until I saw you and the Nutella keeps me awake, so I thought I should have just one bite until you came.” Ella tried again and took a nervous bite from the sandwich. Thelma knew she was lying but purposely overlooked it.
“Hand it over.” Thelma demanded and Ella frowned but she reluctantly released the sandwich, placing it on her mother’s opened palm. “Good girl. Now, I have a treat but if you lose you won’t get it.” Thelma said and Ella looked up at her mother, her ears perked at the sound of a treat.
“What is it!” She asked eagerly.
"I won't say until I know you will win."
"Come on, tell me my treat Mom."
“The last person to reach your room is a loser and there will be no treat.” Thelma said and raced up the stairs, she gave Ella the chance to win because she loved her.
“You lose mom no treat for you.” Ella rejoiced.
“I know that’s why I ate your sandwich.” Thelma said and gave her daughter an evil smile.
“That’s not fair” Ella whined slumping on the bed.
“Yes, it is. Come on star let’s get you to bed, school starts in a few hours.” Ella groaned but had to listen to her mother.
“Goodnight Mom.” She said with a pout on her lips.
“Goodnight star, sleep tight.” Thelma kissed Ella on the forehead and went straight to her room.
All night Thelma couldn’t get the handsome stranger's face off her mind and found it difficult to sleep. She tossed, turned, changed position, took a walk around the house, and yet could not find sleep.
“Maybe I should have kicked his expensive car. Or maybe I should have slapped that arrogant look off his face.” She argued with herself. Thelma fought through the hours of sleepless thoughts and finally found sleep later.Download Novelah App
