Chapter 15 PG-FOURTEEN

{At the hospital}
Thelma rushed through the glass door of the hospital seeing many police officers and doctors outside a door talking about something. Her heart was in her throat thinking they were gathered there because of her husband.
“Excuse me.” Thelma drew their attention from whatever they were discussing.
“Mrs Zachary?” One officer asked her.
“Yes, that’s me.” She replied sounding tensed and worried. “What happened officer? Does this have anything to do with my husband?” She asked with unshed tears welling up in her eyes.
“You might need to sit” He suggested but Thelma shook her head insisting the officer tell her what the issue was and why she was called to meet him at the hospital.
“No, tell me why I am here first. I am not sitting on anything till I know if my husband is okay.” She demanded wishing to God it had nothing to do with Valentino or her sister, but with the situation right now it looked like it is. The officer looked down as if contemplating whether to tell her or not. “Come on tell me!” Thelma almost yelled at him, trying to be strong for herself.
“Who is Valentino Zachary to you?” Officer Sheen asked.
“My husband.” Thelma replied her voice trembled as she spoke.
“I am sorry ma’am to announce this, but your husband Valentino Zachary was found dead two hours ago.” Officer Sheen told her in the most sympathetic voice and words he could use.
Thelma felt like her whole world just crashed down right in front of her, all the voices in the hallway drowned around her as she unconsciously leaned against the wall. She held on to the wall for support but her legs could not support her weight anymore and she slid down to the floor in shock.
“How?” Thelma pondered. She wanted to shout but her throat wasn’t working, she wanted to cry her heart out but tears weren’t cooperating, she wanted to hurt herself, do something stupid but her whole body had gone into shock and did not let her carry out her thoughts.
“We’re sorry for your loss.” Officer Sheen consoled her. There was nothing he could say that will bring her comfort, so he let the doctors help her through this traumatizing state. At a very young age, she was now a widow.
Thelma couldn’t think nor talk, she just sat there staring blankly at the wall opposite her. Everything the doctors said sounded untrue, she tried not to believe it but then this voice inside tells her they weren’t joking her Valentino is gone forever and she would be left at the mercy of this wicked world.
“Mirs Zachary, are you alright?” A doctor approached to see if she needed any help but Thelma snapped.
“Do I look like I am?” She glances up at the female doctor that approached her.
“Ma’am I know what you are facing and I understand how you feel but-”
“You don’t know how I feel.” Thelma interrupted her.”
“I know, but-”
“Have you lost your husband?” She asked.
“No ma’am.”
“Then you can’t understand my pain.” Thelma shuffled on the floor and stood up, the doctor followed her moves to make sure Thelma wasn’t going to try anything that may endanger herself. People in her shoes facing such tragic moments sometimes pose a threat to themselves or the people around them.
“Miss Zachary, you can’t walk home this way, let the officers help you home.”
“I don’t need anyone’s help.” Thelma says.
“You do, remember we are here to help you, we are in this together.”
“I never wish for you to go through what I am going through, so please leave me alone.” Thelma tells the nurse, her gaze was distant she hadn’t prepared to move while her heart was trying to heal ‘my daughter Ella will need me’
“I don’t-” The doctor kept her mouth shut not wanting Thelma to feel worse than she already feels.
“No, no, no I can’t accept this. Maybe it is another Zachary. I won’t fall for your tricks.” Thelma talked to herself and looked up to the doctor with glassy eyes. She looked away, grabbed her purse and left the hospital blocking out the voices of worried doctors and officers, Thelma even snapped at an officer when he tried to stop her. She did feel bad for snapping at him but her thoughts weren’t in place.
Walking aimlessly on the street Thelma thought about their happy moments hours before Valentino died, the last minutes before disaster struck. “You can’t leave me like this Valentino we have a daughter to raise. I can’t do this without you, please come back to me.” She sobbed all the way to her house. People made weird faces at her, she didn’t care one bit, there was too much grieve in her chest for her to be bothered about what people were saying about her.
Minutes later after she picked Ella from the neighbor and entered her home that has now become cold because of Valentino’s absence, she starts to receive unending calls and love text messages from Grayson. Many times she ignored them but other times it got too suspicious and overheated which made Thelma have a visit to her private lawyer for help.
Seeing her lawyer was the best decision she made, he helped her investigate and conduct legal clearance for her and Ella, then left her with two advice which is to look for a good lawyer better than Grayson’s lawyer, a strong reputable lawyer that can put Grayson in his place and secure her’s and her daughter life. That was when she met Harrison Gay and he volunteered to help her with fewer charges.
Thelma was grateful to her lawyer and thanked Harrison for helping her handle her case, but this case also have its own cost. Thelma will have to give her life for a new one, she will have to live again but as someone she is not. Not a good choice but the only option left for her and her daughter.
“Is that the only option?” Thelma asked Harrison.
“I am afraid it is, until Grayson is apprehended and put behind bars your life and your daughter’s life are in danger.” Harrison warns her.
“And you think this is legal.”
“Sure, legal clearance is being made for this case. I will dig out what I cs=an find but I don’t want you or your daughter involved, it will be too risky.”
Thelma looked down at her fingers contemplating her choice and Harrison’s suggestion. He was right on one side but on the other hand he was wrong, it isn’t going to be easy throwing her life away, but if living as a different person will protect her child Thelma is willing to do so.
“Alright, I will do it.” She finally agreed.
“Great choice Mrs Zachary.”
Thelma and Ella left their home and went to settle in another friendly state ‘Florida’ two months after Grayson had been detained and she was given the green flag to leave. Dying her hair white blonde and wearing no makeup as a disguise for the new identity she is already adopting to, Thelma changed only her name but let Ella kept her real name, Grayson won’t be able to recognize her so there was no need to worry much.
This is it, this is how Thelma Valentine was made.
