Chapter 14 PG-THIRTEEN

Still in flashback.
Four hours later...
The memories of their strange encounter comforted Thelma while she waited for a phone call. Four hours had gone and there was no update or call from her husband, the past hours had been edgy not hearing Valentino's voice or receiving his playful texts. This was unusual of him and she worries something bad had happened.
Thelma tried not to show the worry that threatened to weigh her down, she acted like everything was okay in the presence of her daughter. After silently waiting for a miracle phone call, she picked up her phone to call Valentino. Every call she made went into voice mail and panic started to settle. 'he is alright! It could be the weather causing some interference' she repeats to herself to prevent her mind from going completely insane.
'he's on his way, he's on his way. Come on Thelma, why are you so bothered? He's a strong man, he can handle anything, and the weather isn't perfect, he should be here anytime from now'
While she eagerly waits for her husband, she almost forgets little Ella had to eat. So, Thelma went to the kitchen to prepare some food for Ella and made a little bit for herself, knowing Ella would not eat it if she didn't see her mother eating.
It took only a few minutes to prepare their food and Thelma made ready to serve when her phone rang in the living room. Thelma stopped serving and sprinted out of the kitchen as if an earthquake was going to happen, she was careful not to spill any food on the floor and got to the couch, clenching the phone tight. She did not give herself time to check the caller and answered anyway.
“Hello?” She asked desperately.
“Hello ma'am-" A male voice answered instead of her darling husband.
"Wh-ho is this?"
"Please am I speaking to Mrs Zachary?” He asked and her blood ran cold suddenly.
'please have good news! please have good news!'
“Yes, this is Mrs Zachary, who am I speaking to?” She answered almost shakily, her hands gripping the phone a little too hard. The person hasn’t said a word yet but her heart felt like dropping into her stomach expecting the bad news.
“This is Officer Sheen from Eva Palacios police station, your attention is needed at Samwise hospital.” He informed her. Thelma felt her heart skip, it drummed hard beats against her chest and her ears started to ring.
“Why, did something happen?” Thelma managed to voice out with little control, she was trembling physically but the officer couldn’t see her fear and urged her to be at the hospital as soon as possible.
“It would be better if you were here ma'am." He suggests.
"I-I understand but- I just want to know why I was called. Does this have anything to do with my husband? I promise you it wasn't his fault, his brother might have done it and blackmailed him."
"Mrs Zachary, I understand you are tensed, but if you can come here all your questions will be answered. What we want to ask cannot be discussed over the phone.” He said.
“Okay.” She whispered and hung up. "Oh my lord, please let this not be bad news" She prayed and leaned against the couch to compose herself.
‘but why do I have a feeling something is wrong?’ she asked herself and dropped the phone on the couch. The call caused a part of her to be depressed but it should not stop her from her mother duties. So she walked back to the kitchen to finish serving Ella’s meal but could not have the strength to eat. Ella was placed in her chair but did not touch her food when she noticed her mother didn't have a plate in front of her.
Thelma sat frozen on the dining table but some force snaps her back to reality to notice Ella staring curiously at her, and she noticed the food was untouched.
"Baby girl, why aren't you eating?" She asked her little angel.
"Your food!" Ella exclaimed and pointed in front of Thelma. Upon realizing it, Thelma chuckled half-heartedly.
"Baby, I am not hungry now, but I want you to eat your food, okay"
"NO!" Ella shook her head.
"Come on baby, I know you are hungry so I want you to eat for me."
"NO! If no eat, I don't!" Ella proved to her she was stubborn.
"Don't be stubborn, eat your food-"
"NO! I DON'T!"
"Dang! You're so stubborn like your father." She said under her breath. "If you don't eat I won't." She finally told Ella and it worked like magic because Ella nodded her head in approval while waiting for Thelma to get some food for herself.
Thelma slowly moved around the kitchen and got herself a basic portion of spaghetti then went back to sit on the dining table. Ella looked happy to see her mother eat and began eating her food, but looked at her mother to make sure she was eating.
Thelma could not avoid this drama her little girl was giving her and ate along. She planned that after the meal they were both going to the hospital as requested by Officer Sheen. To the heavens Thelma wished Valentino did not meet an unfortunate incident but she silently blames Grayson if anything were to happen to her husband.
“Mama, where is papa?” Little Ella asked her mother while they ate. The silent atmosphere suddenly became thick, almost unbearable for Thelma but she had to stay in control and keep her emotions in check.
“Papa is fine.” Thelma pushed out of her tight throat. She struggled to keep her voice strong for her daughter, she didn’t want Ella to be traumatized by the situation.
"Is he going to be back?" She innocently asked and Thelma's heart stung.
"Baby, why don't we finish this food and get some ice cream?" Thelma suggests to preoccupy Ella's mind.
"Yes!" Ella yelled with excitement.
After their shared lunch, Thelma got dressed and put on some warm clothes for Ella, she took her bag and left the apartment with Ella on her waist. Because she is unaware of the situation, Thelma decides to leave Ella with a neighbor and went to the hospital alone and freezing inside but not from the weather.
