Chapter Sixty-five

The next day, Rebecca woke up alone in Kwan's bedroom. She remembered what happened last night—they were tangled up in his bed like nobody could separate them. A smile tugged at her lips, thinking about Kwan's fierce and gallant personality to save her from those werewolves. He didn't hesitate to rescue her even if he knew it was dangerous.
"Such a wonderful day," she said, standing up. She walked towards the window, stretching and yawning. She tied the white curtains and opened the window. It was another cloudy morning. "What is Kwan doing there?"
Seeing Kwan cut the tall grasses from the lawn made her remember the past, when he was still acting as Emerson. She smiled and immediately went out from her room. She ran down the stairs, excited to see Kwan, but she accidentally tripped and fell.
"Ahhh!" She screamed while falling down the stairs.
Kwan heard Rebecca's scream and rushed inside the mansion. In an instant, he was there, catching her mid-fall. His vampire instincts had fully awakened.
"Are you okay?" Kwan asked, staring at Rebecca's sparkling eyes like a full bloody moon, reflecting his face.
"Uh, um, yeah," Rebecca replied; she couldn't take her eyes off him. "What are you doing outside?"
Kwan let her go and said, "I'm trimming the grass. We'll need an intense clean-up around the house to make it look new again. We'll need to repaint the walls too. Anyway, I found a snake in the garden."
"No!" Rebecca shouted in surprise as Kwan showed her a green snake.
"Don't be scared, it won't bite," Kwan said, holding the snake's head. "Besides, it's not venomous, and you won't die from its bite either. You're a vampire, remember?"
Rebecca swallowed her saliva, staring at the snake with so much curiosity and admiration. Slowly, she touched the snake's head; it was slimy.
"You can have it if you want," Kwan said, handing it to her, with a smirk on his face.
"Stop playing around, Kwan," Rebecca scolded him, changing the tone of her voice. "I have to go in the kitchen and cook something for breakfast."
"You don't have to do that, milady," Kwan replied. "I already cooked breakfast."
"For real?" Rebecca asked. "You're such a responsible husband. I haven't tasted your cooking for a long time. Come on, let's have breakfast together."
Kwan let go of the snake as Rebecca grabbed his hand and dragged him to the dining room. He served the food to the table and sat on the chair in front of her. He wanted to talk about those police officers; he wondered where Rebecca threw them, but he hesitated since they were eating.
"Are you okay?" Rebecca asked, looking at him. "I know you, Kwan; if you have something to say, please don't hesitate to say it. I won't be mad."
Kwan swallowed the food in his mouth before saying, "I just want to know where you put the corpses of those two police officers who visited here last time."
"Don't worry about it, I already buried them in the garden," Rebecca replied like it was nothing.
"What? In the garden?" Kwan asked, surprised.
"Yeah, why?" Rebecca asked, confused.
"So, that was the reason why it's so stinky there? How many corpses have you buried there anyway? Why are the grasses growing so quickly?" Kwan inquired.
"A lot," Rebecca replied. "Just stop asking and finish your food already if you don't want to be buried too."
"I'm just trying to make you laugh; why are you so serious?" Kwan asked.
"People's lives aren't to be taken lightly, Kwan. You must know that what I did is a crime," Rebecca said.
"Even if you did it for me?" Kwan asked. "I'm sorry, Rebecca, I couldn't protect myself, but from now on, I'll be strong for myself and you too."
Rebecca was surprised how Kwan knew that she killed those two because she didn't want them to take him away. But she knew that it would be another trouble once the other officers discovered their missing comrades.
"There's no crime that can be hidden forever, Kwan. We'll have to do our best to hide from the world. I don't want to lose you again," Rebecca said.
"You won't lose me again, Rebecca," Kwan assured. "Remember what we've gone through? We both almost died, but fate had something in store for us. Even if we always got separated, we always found each other again."
While eating their breakfast, they heard a knock from the door. Kwan stood up to check it, but Rebecca told him to stay there and finish his food, that she'd be back right away, but she did not.
Meanwhile, as Rebecca opened the door, a handsome guy was standing in front of her. He had bronze eyes, brown skin, and short blonde hair. Behind him, standing a gorgeous lady.
"Lucille?" Rebecca asked in surprise. "Is this Patrick? But how? How did you know I'm living here?"
"What kind of question is that?" Lucille asked, stepping forward. "You're my beloved young lady. How would I not know all the places where you might be? We didn't find you in Madam Bernadette's mansion, so we went here. So, how are you? We have lost contact for so long, and I wondered if you were fine and threw you a visit as a surprise. Are you living here alone? Where is your husband? Where is Madam Bernadette?"
Rebecca's head started aching from Lucille's too many words and questions. She knew it would be a very long conversation as they hadn't met for so long, so she invited them inside her house.
Kwan was about to stand up when Rebecca came back with two familiar faces with her. He easily recognized them: Patrick Salvatore, Wen's friend, and Lucille, Rebecca's former personal maid.
"Good morning, Kwan," Lucille greeted. "So you're living here together?"
"Um, yeah," Rebecca replied. She knew it would be more difficult to act now that Lucille was with them—she would soon find it suspicious. "We've been living here together. Come on, let's have breakfast together, and we can talk about everything while we eat."
Lucille and Patrick sat down on the chairs. Rebecca told them to not be shy and eat anything they wanted, but because there wasn't much food on the table, they just had coffee instead.
"So, where should we start?" Rebecca asked. She didn't want to share too much information, even with Lucille, who was her loyal servant. She had to be cautious now, especially because there were a lot of people wanting them dead.
"About your mom," Lucille replied. "I haven't seen her for a while. You didn't attend my wedding either. As I can remember, I sent you the invitation."
The memories flooded back to Rebecca's mind—how that gangster killed her mother and daughter. She could never forgive him, not even in death. If it weren't for him, they would still be alive. They'd still be a family.
"She passed away," were the only words Rebecca could say because the more she thought about the details, the more her rage grew, the less she trusted anyone, and the more she lost faith in humanity.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Lucille said. "I didn't know. So, that must be the reason why you didn't attend my wedding, right?"
"It's okay, Lucille; it already happened, and we don't want to talk about it anymore. Let's leave the past behind. People die; nothing's permanent in this world, so we better enjoy the moments left in our lives," Rebecca said.
"I guess you're right, and I really miss you," Lucille said with a smile on her face, that kind of smile that annoys Rebecca even more. "Can I hug you?"
Rebecca allows Lucille to hug her. Then, they decided to cook more food. Lucille offered her help, and while chopping the carrots, she accidentally cut her finger, triggering Rebecca's and Kwan's thirst for blood as the smell reached their nostrils.
"Are you guys okay?" Lucille asked, confused by their silence and why they stared at her like she was some kind of delicious food.
