Chapter Seventy

Lucille was on the living room, sitting on the couch, watching movies in her phone when she heard someone knocking on the door. She turned off her phone, stood up, opened the door, and was surprised to see Kwan and Rebecca standing in front of her. They were both wrapped in thick clothes and it was obvious why.
"I didn't expect you to be here so early," Lucille said. "Come, get inside before you get melted under the sun. I'm sorry I haven't cleaned the house."
"It's okay," Rebecca said, stepping inside and taking a deep breath. "Finally. I can take off these clothes."
People had been staring at her and Kwan, gossiping that they were some kind of weirdos who wears such thick clothes during sunny days, but they didn't mind them either since they had no idea what they were going through.
Kwan hesitated if he should enter because Lucille didn't seem to welcome him, and he could understand why. He remembered what she said that morning when they woke up and found themselves naked.
"We have to hide it. I don't want Rebecca to get hurt or to worry. We both did it, accidentally, as we are drunk, so please keep this between us no matter what happen."
Kwan had been thinking about it for a while. Wouldn't it be more painful for Rebecca once she knew the truth by herself? Although Lucille had a point, Rebecca, as Kwan's wife, still have the right to know it.
"Kwan," Rebecca called, wondering why her husband has always been lost in thoughts for a while now. "What are you doing there? Come on, get inside."
Kwan got back to the present. He followed Rebecca's inside. He couldn't help but stare at Lucille's stomach, she was undoubtedly pregnant. If only he was more careful that night, perhaps it didn't happen, but it already happened and nothing could stop it.
"So, how's your baby, Lucille?" Rebecca asked.
"Just fine," Lucille replied. "How about yours?"
"Great," Rebecca said. "I hope my child will grow up healthy and won't have any illness, and yours too. I hope you'll give birth to a strong and healthy baby. Anyway, I just want to ask who's the father of that?"
Rebecca's question made Lucille swallow hard. She couldn't speak for a while, and blushed as Rebecca kept staring at her, making it difficult to lie.
"Patrick," Kwan interrupted. "It must be Patrick, right?"
"Um, yeah," Lucille said. "Patrick's the father of my child, our child rather."
"Oh, well, thanks for answering," Rebecca said, smiling.
Rebecca couldn't quite comprehend why it didn't feel right, like Lucille and Kwan were hiding something from her, but again, she didn't overthink about it, knowing that the three of them were close friends.
"So, do you want to have a drink, coffee? Juice?" Lucille asked, changing the topic.
"Yeah, I want coffee," Kwan replied. "As for Rebecca, I think it's better for her to drink more water since coffee will not be good for our baby."
"Roger that," Lucille saluted like she was in a formation of some army. She disappeared to the kitchen and brought a mug of coffee and a glass of water. She put them on the desk. "Here's your order."
"So, where are your children?" Rebecca asked.
"Today is Monday, so they are at school. Don't worry you'll meet them soon, I'm going to take them later," Lucille said.
"Wouldn't that be difficult? You're pregnant, you know," Rebecca said, worried.
"Don't worry about it, my stomach isn't that heavy yet, so I can still handle it, also worrying won't be good for your child, so just relax," Lucille replied.
Meanwhile, Kwan took the mug of coffee and drank it, but it tasted so bitter that he couldn't help but spit it out.
"Kwan, what's wrong with you?" Rebecca asked, as her arm got wet from the coffee.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Rebecca, I think I forgot to add some sugar in his coffee," Lucille said.
Are you sure you forgot? Kwan asked in his mind. Or maybe you meant it? His puckered face tells it all, he was trying to hold himself back from doing something he would regret, but Lucille just laughed, not taking him seriously.
Rebecca wiped her wet arms with a handkerchief. "You shouldn't be the one doing that, Lucille, Kwan's old enough to brew his own coffee."
Kwan went to the kitchen without saying anything. He didn't know why women were so difficult to understand. He was just sitting there, not doing anything wrong, but they'd make fun of him. What the fuck is wrong with them?
"What's wrong with that guy?" Rebecca asked. "He didn't even say sorry after spitting coffee on me."
"He's probably tired, just forget about it," Lucille said. "Anyway, let's talk about your child, what do you want it to be? A girl or a boy?"
"I want it to be a girl, but it's still okay even if it's a boy, the most important thing is that it'll be healthy and normal," Rebecca replied.
Inside the kitchen, Kwan added a spoonful of sugar in his coffee. Then he sipped it, the aromatizing scent and sweet taste calmed down his nerves. That was close, he thought. He was about to burst, but fortunately he controlled himself. He was just trying to be more patient as he didn't know what he could do once he got mad.
Nine months laters, Rebecca gave birth with the help of a midwife. However, it wasn't as they expected. The child was a hairy monster, with red eyes and tiny arms. It was so creepy that even the midwife was scared of it.
"This, this is not a human," Kwan cried, holding the monster. He put it on the table and let out a knife.
"No, Kwan, what are you doing?" Rebecca asked from her bed. "Please don't do that. She's our daughter, please..." she begged.
However, Kwan couldn't accept the child and decided to kill it without hesitation, even if Rebecca didn't want him to do it. He just had no other choice as he couldn't raise a monster.
Lucille, on the other hand, gave birth to a healthy boy. She named him Charlie. As he grew up, she noticed that he was a vampire—he grew fangs and once bit her nipples, so she decided to stop breastfeeding him.
One day, Lucille went to the market to buy some vegetables, but when she arrived home, she found her daughter and son lying on the floor, dead. Then she saw Charlie looking at her, blood still dripping from his mouth.
"What did you do?" Lucille screamed, anger consumed her as she realized her son killed his siblings. "Son of a—"
Charlie suddenly lept towards her, trying to bite her too just like what she did to his siblings, but Lucille dodged him and kicked him, sending him flying to the walls.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Lucille apologized. She got so emotional that she forgot Charlie was her son. She couldn't forgive him after what he had done to his siblings.
"Go away and never come back again!" Lucille snapped.
Even if it was difficult for her, Lucille had to set her son free, she couldn't explain how she felt. She hated him for killing his siblings, but also worried about what might happen to him once people find out he was a vampire.
"Why didn't you tell me about this mom? Why didn't you tell me that you're a vampire too? What's the reason why you've been hiding this from me? Are you afraid that I'll find out? Are you afraid that once I knew I'll hate you?" Charlie asked while walking away.
Charlie felt like his life was drifting with the wind. He lost control and killed his siblings, his mother hated him for what he had done, he didn't know who his father was, he didn't have a place to call home, he didn't know what he had done to deserve all this pain.
He wondered why he and his siblings didn't look similar, was he an adopted child? Why his siblings weren't vampires and why was he different from them? He knew his mother was hiding a lot of secrets from him, and he was ready to find them out by himself.
