Chapter Seventy-four
"I shouldn't have trusted that little brat!" Denisse cursed after hearing one of his spies' report, saying that Charlie betrayed him as he conspired with the enemies.
The spy saw Charlie fight with Kwan; he was defeated and chose to become his apprentice. Brandon heard their conversation through a recorder that he attached to his sleeve.
"Did he really think he could escape from this?" Denisse asked, enraged. "Gather everyone. We'll hunt vampires!"
Scanning the surroundings with the help of a little telescope he had borrowed from Rebecca, Kwan spotted Denisse and his men at the mountain from a distance. There were a lot of them, a hundred, as he estimated.
Denisse had gathered the most experienced gangsters, assassins, hitmen, and spies all over the country to take Kwan down. He paid them a huge amount of money and said that whoever could kill Rebecca or Kwan would get an additional prize.
"So, are you saying that that man is still alive?" Rebecca asked. "I thought he was already dead since he stopped bothering us for a while. He had already taken our daughter and my mom. What else does he need from us?"
"Maybe he stopped bothering us, but that doesn't mean he's dead, and I don't think he already got what he wanted. He's cruel and is willing to kill anyone who becomes a hindrance to his plans, and we're one of those hindrances. Do you still remember your parents? They did everything to protect this land," Kwan said.
"So he's doing all of this for power? Did he already lose his mind? Did he really think that taking this land is worth risking the lives of those people?" Rebecca asked.
"That's not for me to answer, but he's a Mafia boss, and killing isn't something new to him. One thing is certain—he'll attack us soon. As I've estimated, there are a hundred of them approaching here," Kwan said.
"A hundred?" Rebecca was shocked. "That's too many. So, what are we going to do now? We still have time. We can't just stay here and die. We have to escape."
"No, we can't do that, Rebecca. Escaping has never been a choice. We have to face him, tell him that we're done with his game, and we've lost everything already. We can't just leave this land and give it to him for free like we're a charity—we can't just allow his cruel plans to succeed. Your parents have worked hard and protected this land at all costs; we can't disappoint them, and besides, Denisse will never stop unless he kills us. Even if we escape, he'll keep sending spies and assassins to hunt us," Kwan said.
"I think you've made a lot of good points there, but we're clearly outnumbered. How are we going to fight them? Isn't escaping the right choice? Fighting them will be a suicide for us," Rebecca argued.
"Death is inevitable, Rebecca, so I'd rather die with pride, protecting what belongs to us, than run away like a coward. Maybe I sound like an impulsive or rebellious guy to you right now, but I'm just telling the truth," Kwan said.
Rebecca sighed deeply as she knew she couldn't win against Kwan once he had made up his mind. He was so stubborn, always choosing to fight rather than to escape, always ready to risk his life for something he called pride.
"It seems like nothing will change your mind anymore, and I won't allow you to fight alone. If you die, then I'd rather die too," Rebecca said.
Kwan wrapped his arms around Rebecca. "I know you'd say that. If ever luck won't side with us, please always remember I love you, no matter where you are."
"I love you too, Kwan," Rebecca said, looking directly at Kwan's eyes. "But this is now the right time to be emotional. We have to prepare ourselves for battle. Let's take them first, ambushing them one by one until their numbers decrease."
Kwan agreed with Rebecca's plan, and they prepared the things needed to assassinate the enemies. They'd attack in the middle of the night since they'd be asleep during that time, and vampires are strong.
"Charlie! My child, why did you come back?" Denisse asked.
"Please give me another chance, sir. I know you're going to kill them, so I'm here, joining you," Charlie said.
"Did you really think I'd just let your mistake pass?" Denisse asked, pointing his sword at Charlie. "You've made a promise to kill them, but you turned back against me."
"Wait, sir, please give me another chance. I'll do as you said from now on," Charlie begged. He was on his knees.
Denisse swung his sword, but instead of cutting Charlie's head, he sheathed it back. He knew he could still use him since he was strong enough and a vampire.
"This is your last chance, little boy. Kill Kwan Moldrick and bring his head to me, and then you'll be forgiven," Denisse said in a serious tone of voice.
The men let Charlie go, and he went back to the mansion, ready to kill Kwan. He met him in the garden, and they had an intense sword clash. However, he noticed that Kwan wasn't fighting him at all and focused on defending himself.
"Why aren't you fighting me back? I'm here to kill you! I'm your enemy!" Charlie exclaimed.
"Where is that rage coming from, Charlie?" Kwan asked calmly, making Charlie even more enraged; his strikes grew harder and his moves faster.
Charlie had read Kwan's moves since they had been training before. He cut his left arm, and blood dripped, but Kwan didn't fight back and kept defending himself with his other arm. He promised himself to protect Charlie and never hurt him again, no matter what happens.
Charlie was so confused; they were enemies, yet Kwan was so kind to him. "Why? Why are you doing this?" he asked, chasing his breath as he stopped. "Why don't you fight back? I am your enemy! Kill me!"
"Do you really want to know why?" Kwan asked, his expression serious as he looked straight into Charlie's eyes, and then he said, "It's because... I'm your father!"
"What? You? My father?" Charlie was shocked. "But how?"
"Calm down, son. Let me tell you a story. I and your mother, Lucille, had made a big mistake when we cheated on Rebecca. We were drunk that night, and I mistook her for my wife; we had sex, and she got pregnant with a boy, and that boy... that boy was you, Charlie," Kwan said.
"After all this time?" Charlie asked. The sword fell from his hands. "So that's the reason why you're so kind to me? Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"I should have done that, but I couldn't. It wasn't easy for me, seeing my own child, the fruit of my mistake, staying in my wife's mansion—that's not as simple as you think, Charlie," Kwan explained.
"What's going on here?" Rebecca rushed towards them. She was shocked to find Kwan's arm on the ground. "Kwan! Are you alright?' She asked worriedly.
"Yes, I am. I'm a vampire after all. I'll recover my arm if you let me drink your blood," Kwan said.
"Here, bite me." Rebecca got close to Kwan and allowed him to sink his fangs into her neck.
Kwan sucked Rebecca's blood, and his arm slowly recovered. He grew a new one. "I think that's enough. Thank you so much, my wife," he said.
Rebecca looked at Charlie and asked, "Are you okay?"
Charlie was confused; even if Rebecca and he weren't connected by blood, she always treated him like her own son, so he decided to return the favor and help them against Denisse. It would be the last time he'd betray them.
"Um, I'm fine. I'm really sorry. I think I've gone too far," Charlie apologized.
"Don't think about it, son," Kwan said, his face softened with a smile. "Come on, let's get inside. Join us for dinner."
Rebecca wasn't surprised at all when she heard Kwan call Charlie his son since she knew it the first time they met. Her husband was so close to Charlie, and they almost have similar appearances, and he is also a vampire. Although he was Lucille and Kwan's son, she couldn't hate him since he didn't choose to be one either.Download Novelah App
