Chapter 10 The Christmas Eve (Stranger to the rescue)
Everyone was happy because it was Christmas. People got together and showed love each others, and her parents enjoyed it.Some people sang karaoke, others drank, and some danced together with the music. After a while, they stopped the karaoke and her older sister get the microphone and called Amelia and Richard to come on front. Amelia's sister handed her the microphone. And she smiled then talk, " so Good afternoon ninyong tanan, and pacensya kaau ha mag English rato para sakung bana kag anak " she said and smiled at her husband. "We're so grateful you're here with us today to celebrate Christmas. I just wanted to say let's exchange gifts first, then we can all have fun, because the kids are waiting to get their gifts that they can receive hahaha," she said with a laugh. "And for those who don't know, this is my husband, Richard Smith, and of course our beautiful daughter, Patresiah." She asked Patresiah to come forward. "Please give her a round of applause!" she added. Everyone clapped as Patresiah walked towards her parents. "Thanks, Mom," she said. "You're welcome, my dear," her mom replied. Patresiah stood beside mom dad and was told to give a speech to everyone, then her dad react because she didn't tell Patresiah last night that she will going to speech, he was scared that her daughter might be upset again, but her wife said your daughter is cleaver bhe just trust her, so she had no choice but to do it. "Good afternoon everyone, especially to my grandparents and to all of you. It's an honor to speak in front of you all. We're so happy to be here, especially since you've been so kind to us. I hope this Christmas will be a time for all of you to show each other love. To everyone here, I just wanted to say that my dad, mom, and I are so happy to be here. We traveled a long way to be with you all. We really appreciate that you all made the effort so we could just be together. Thank you." After she finished speaking, she handed the microphone to her mom and moved to sit next to her dad, saying, "Daddy, I was so nervous earlier." "It's okay, honey. I liked your speech," her dad said while fixing her hair. After her mom gave instructions for the change gifts everyone formed a circle according to where they belongs. The kids were on the right side, the teenagers on the left, and the parents are on the back. Patresiah didn't participate because she didn't have a gift. Her mom hadn't told her they were doing a gift exchange while her dad was standing and videoing everyone. "Honey, come here," her mom called. "Daddy, why did Mom call me? I don't have a gift," she asked her dad. "I don't know either, honey. She didn't tell us about this last night, did she?" her dad said. "Yes, you're..." she didn't finish word because her mom called her again. When she turned around, her mom was carrying a large gift. She ask permission on her dad and went over to her mom. "Mom, who's that for?" she asked. "It's for you. Participate, honey. I prepared it yesterday, I just didn't tell your dad," her mom said. "Thanks, Mom," she said. "My pleasure. Come on, I'll take you to your spot." The change gifts began, and because she was in the middle, it took a while for her turn to come up. When it's her turn, the music started, she stood up and walked into the circle. Her dad yelled, "That's my princess!" as she walked, making her smile. A few seconds later, the music stopped, and Larah was so happy because she's the one who received her gift. Larah was overjoyed with the large gift. Patresiah just smiled and went back to her seat, feeling a little confused. She was worried that Larah might be disappointed because she didn’t even know what was the gift is. After hours of fun and festivities, some guests didn't leave yet, the celebration continued til the evening. And her cousins was so busy enjoying the dessert then her parents are talking with the guest. It's already dark, Patresiah went for a walk to get away from all the noise. The air was cold and smelled like pine trees. She looked at the lights in the town square enjoying her moment with Zhian. Suddenly, a bunch of kids came up to her, hiding their faces. They wanted get her money and sounded mean. Patresiah was scared and held onto her purse tightly. Just as she thought she was going to be robbed, a young guy, Deo, came out of the darkness. He looked angry and stood between Patresiah and the kids. His voice was deep and scary, and the kids ran away. Patresiah was safe, but she was still shaking. Deo smiled shyly and introduced himself. He was a local boy, and his life was very different from Patresiah's. Patresiah just smile at Deo because she didn't understand bisaya then run away together with Zhian back to her grandma's home , Deo watch her left without idea why she didn't respond him, but then he found a handkerchief at the ground with a name "Patresiah" so he decided to pick it up and hope they could see each other again just in case she was the owner of it. But in that moment, under the Christmas lights, they felt something special between them. This was the start of their story, a Christmas surprise in the village, a love story that began in a simple, beautiful place.
