BY NINE O’CLOCK, Cheska and Carter were already at the Hanok Village, an old Korean village with traditional houses in the middle of skyscrapers. Even the road has not changed with time. Tourist buses were already lining up with tourists themselves taking pictures even at the entrance gate. Cheska also noticed that some of those were looking at them and taking their pictures. She hid behind Carter. "People are taking pictures of me." "They just thought you’re beautiful." "I'm not used to getting people's attention," she said. She was a typical wallflower. She prefers not to be noticed by others. "Don’t mind them. Just imagine you’re a princess today and they are your slaves,” Carter said confidently. He took her pictures. At first, she was self-conscious because Carter’s attention was just on her. But she eventually got used to it. She also felt a little better when she saw some tourists who were also dressed in traditional Korean dresses like her who were busy doing their own pictorials. Carter was busy explaining to her the importance of that village in the Korean culture and the government’s efforts on preserving it, when a group of women approached them. “Oppa! Oppa!” they shrieked when they came towards Carter. "Johi sajinjom jjigodod wegenni." “Ah! I will take your picture?” Carter asked, holding out his hand to them for their camera or cellphone. "Anyo, dang sineu nuri wahamkke." The woman pointed to herself and Carter. "They want to take a picture with me.” Carter looked at Cheska with an awkward look. "Can she take our picture?" one of the girls asked. "She’s asking if you can take our pictures for us,” he said, giving her a sheepish look. They folded their palms together and bowed. "Please, ahjumma." Cheska held her breath. “Ahjumma. She called me ahjumma.” They called her an older lady. Aunt-like. Not even an ‘unnie’. Cheska felt offended especially since these women even looked like they were older than her, just with fairer complexion. “Sure. Three thousand won,” she said with a smile. "Bod?" the women asked. "What three thousand won?" Carter was confused. "If you want a picture with him, pay me three thousand won for five shots," she explained, smiling. Carter looked like he was having a hard time deciding if he would translate to the women what Cheska said. She pulled out her cellphone and typed on the translator app that Eun Young installed for her. She wasn’t really serious about charging them for taking their pictures. She just wanted to have Carter all to herself and she was hoping the women would leave them alone if they knew she was taking payments. "Samcheon won," the woman with the red hair said when she heard the Cheska’s translated word from the translator app. "Ulineun samcheon won-i pil-yohabnida." "Aish!" the other women said, but they were pulling out their own wallets at the same time. They all took out money from their wallets until they completed the three thousand won. "Ahjumma, here!" What the-- These witches really paid. They really wanted to have a picture with Carter. She had no choice but to take the camera and take their pictures. She was annoyed especially when she saw how the women pressed themselves against Carter, even constantly calling him oppa. "Kamsahamnida," Cheska thanked the women after the pictorial. They were still giggling when they left. "Why did you charge them? It's embarrassing,” Carter said. “What is so embarrassing about that? You said you are going to be mine all day. If someone else wants your services, of course they needed to pay me,” she said with a smirk. “Anyway, three thousand won is cheap so…" "You're really are something else, Cheska," he said, shaking his head. "You even make money out of me." “It’s a win for us because now, we have a budget for our meal.” She waved at the family of foreigners who was looking around. “Three thousand won for a picture with this handsome man. Three thousand won!” The family approached them but this time, they took a picture together with her. It felt a little awkward at first but eventually enjoyed it especially in taking pictures with the children. One of the kids even borrowed Carter's hat. And they got another three thousand won. Cheska tapped Carter’s shoulder. “Good. We have six thousand won now. If we can hang out here all day, I wonder how much I’ll earn from you…” "You are really enjoying this," he said. “Of course. I am happy when I smell the scent of money.” “Ayyyy! Can we try with that handsome fella?” said a gay man with long curly hair, pointing in Carter’s direction. “Let's take a picture with him, sisters." "I like him,” said the one with the red hair. They were five gays who approached them.
