Chapter seventy nine

I woke up from sleep still feeling tired, because I literarily didn't sleep well last night as I was constantly waking up to check up on Clarinet, just to make sure she doesn't have any complications, especially not under my watch.
I rubbed my eyes gently as I opened it slowly and looked around. Everywhere looked blur, so I shut my eyes for few seconds before opening it again. This time, I could see things clearer.
I placed my hand on Clarinet chest and felt her heart beat, that was life-saving. She was still sleeping and haven't stirred a bit from sleep. If this continues, then I might have to contact an ambulance to come pick us up and involve the police as well.
I got down from the bed and walked to the bathroom, staggering like a little drunk head. I was tired and still feeling sleepy. I took my toothbrush, put a paste on it and brushed my teeth, looking at myself in the mirror infront of me.
I looked so tired, perhaps from yesterday's stress and for the fact that I couldn't get enough sleep last night. After brushing my teeth, I decided to have my bath, it would calm me down.
I went back to the bed room and undressed, wrapping myself with my towel and putting on my shower cap. I stepped into the bathroom, ready to feel the cold chills that would come from the cold water I would use.
I removed the towel and placed it gently on the cotton slide that demarcated the bathtub from the rest of the bathroom. I turned on the shower and let the water flow and pour down on me, as I rubbed my body with the droplets.
Done with bathing, I dried up the water with my towel and didn't bother using my cream, since I was feeling a bit hot that morning.
As I moved to the bedroom, I heard a phone vibration, so I rushed to the table where I dropped my phone to check who was calling. I didn't see any call, by then the phone vibration had stopped so I unlocked my phone, to be sure I didn't miss it.
Checking my phone, I didn't see any thing that showed that I missed a call. The phone vibration started again, then I realized it wasn't mine, but Clarinet's.
I rushed quickly to her bag, throwing everything I saw on the bed, till o got hold of the phone. I checked the name of the person calling, perhaps it could give me a hint to what happened to Clarinet yesterday. The caller ID showed Jide.
That name rang a bell in my ears but, I didn't want to conclude yet till I hear from the horse's mouth itself, for the meantime, I will keep my hands crossed.
I took the phone and dropped it on the table where mine was. Then I changed into a light flimsy dress and a bum short. I wasn't expecting any one today and I am not sure any one was coming for Clarinet as well, so that wouldn't be a problem.
I went to the kitchen. The dishes from yesterday morning was still on the sink. I was so lazy at doing dishes, it was the worst house chores you can ever as me to do, I really detest it. Clarinet was the one who does the dishes, while I take care of the rooms. Right now, I had no choice than to wash them myself, since I don't even know when she will wake up.
Grudgingly, I removed the plate from the sink, filled it with water and poured some liquid soap inside to form lather. I started washing the plates one after another, till I was done. Then I replaced the water and rinsed all the plates carefully, placing them on the plate rack.As soon as I was done washing, I sighed heavily for the work done and completed.
The food I bought the previous night was remaining as I bought plenty of it. I warmed the rice and then the stew which after I was done, I kept them back.
I went to the fridge to check if I could see something else that I can take for breakfast, so I can take the rice later in the afternoon.
I found a loaf of bread in the fridge, that brought out a glint of smile on my face. I grabbed the bread, taking canned milk along with it, as well as sardine. I used my leg to kick the fridge closed and took the things I took from the fridge and placed them on the table.
I took a plate and spoon from the rack and tossed it on the table. I opened the sardine and turned everything inside the plate. I beat the fish till it was mixed evenly with the oil in it. I added a little ground pepper, salt and a little seasoning inside it and mixed. I shredded a little spring onion inside the plate, then I stirred the mixture for few seconds.
I opened the bread and took out some slices from the pack. Placing them carefully on the table, I used spoon to scoop the mixture on the bread slice, then covered it with another. I did it on five more, making sure the mixture was just enough for the six.
When I finished, I plugged in the toaster and placed two of if inside, then covered it to toast.
It took about fifteen minutes to toast everything, which after I was done, I cleaned the toaster and kept it well.
I opened the canned milk and poured it into a transparent glass cup, I took three of the sandwich I made and placed them on a plate, then I sat down comfortably on the chair to eat the food.
For few days now, Edison hasn't called me or texted me atleast. Though, he still sent my weekly allowance and doubled it. Perhaps, he was very busy with business that he didn't have time to call me or maybe he forgot. I'm not sure he forgot about me, if he did he wouldn't have sent the money.
Each time I try to call him, it goes to voice mail with a message saying that he is unavailable but will be available soonest. That message is annoying, really annoying, but I can't blame him though.
If he is busy with the business that brings him a lot of money that he is able to provide for my needs, then I have no reason to be angry though.
But, on the contrary, what if he is tired of me and maybe he is seeing someone else, which is taking more of his time and now he is using his business as an excuse not to see me or answer my calls.
Hush! The more I think about it the more annoyed I am and at the same time, the more confused I am as well. Because, I don't know which of my thoughts are right, till I get the proof or evidence. I just hope that it is his business that is keeping him busy and not something else.
I looked down to what I was eating, then I saw that I have been stuck with the one sandwich for over few minutes. I was so deep in thoughts that I'd almost forgotten that I was eating. I quickly ate up the food fast, before I might get tired of it and loose appetite.
After eating, I dropped the plates and the cup inside the sink and left it there. I wasn't ready to wash another dirty dish again, not now and not yet. I kept the sandwich remaining inside the fridge for Clarinet, so she can have something to eat by the time she finally wakes up.
I took a bottle of water from the fridge, opened it and gulped it's contents till I drank everything and swallowed up. I was about closing the fridge when I heard some ruffled noise behind me. I was really scared so I turned quickly to see what was that, clutching the plastic bottle so tight to use it against whatever that might be.
As I turned around forcefully, ready to fight for my life if that was the case, I saw someone standing few distance away from me, near the door and wide eyed. It was Clarinet, she was awake.
"Clarinet! I screamed, running to hug her.
I noticed she was staring at me like she didn't understand what was going on. I didn't mind and didn't care, she was just waking up, so it's a bit normal.
I hugged her so tight that she had to gasp for breathe before I finally let her go.
"Oh my goodness Clarinet, you are finally awake. I should call this a miracle right? Because, o wasn't expecting that you'll..." I pretended to clear my throat and stopped talking.
"Juwie, what happened to me? I feel a whole lot of pain in my body, especially my head. It aches like someone is pounding heavily on top of it." She complained, holding her head.
I helped her sit down on the chair then ran to the fridge to get water for her to drink. I poured the water into a cup and handed it over to her.
"Drink it up, everything. It will help subside the headache you are having."
She took it from me. "So, I don't have to take painkillers for it? She asked, gulping the water so fast, till she finished the water in the cup.
I took the cup from her then answered, "no, you don't have to take painkillers for the meantime. Wait for a while, take some more water, if it persists, then you can take some painkiller."
She winced hard as she swallowed the last of it in her mouth.
"Sorry dear, it will be fine okay. You just have to take it slowly. Give it time, you will be okay." I said to her.
She nodded slowly, still touching her head. "I can still feel it banging." She whined, squeezing her face.
I frowned, "this isn't the first time you are having a hangover, so stop acting like a baby."
"Yeah, I know but Juwie, this isn't like the others I have. This is suicide, it's banging so much and it's unbearable."
"Well, uhm... I think you should take the painkiller then. Hold on, let me get it for you."
I went to the room and took out my first aid box from under the bed where I usually keep it. I opened it and searched for the painkiller. Luckily, I found a pack and took it to the kitchen.
"Hey, I got one. Here, take." I said, taking out a tablet from it and giving it to her, then I filled the cup with water again and handed it over to her.
She took the water from me and drank the drug, then dropped the cup back on the table, cleaning her lips with the back of her palms.
"Are you okay now? I asked her, observing her closely.
"Well, I guess I will be okay soon though. But, it's subsiding now." She answered.
I thought about asking her if she could remember anything that happened yesterday, why she was acting so strange and behaving like someone who was slightly insane.
"Clarinet." I called, fixing my eyes on her and careful to take note of whatever her reaction would be, so I will know when she is lying to me.
"Yeah" she replied, keeping a straight face.
"Do you remember what happened yesterday? Or let me rephrase my question, where did you go to yesterday and who did you go with? I asked.
She looked at me for a while then removed her eyes and looked away, as if afraid to say anything. But, I wasn't giving up on that, not after spending my money to come pick her up and stressing myself to make sure she was okay.
"I am waiting and you know me, I won't stop asking till you give me the right answer that I am waiting for." I said to her.
She started to talk then stopped, looking at me like I was her mother or something.
"I am waiting still."
"Okay, uhm. There was this guy I met recently. He came to the office and I was asked to attend to him. Well, before he left, he tipped me real big then he dropped his business card with me. Well, I was, you know, I was kinda interested in him."
"Interested in him? Like, wanting to have something with him? Is that what you mean?
"Well, yeah. I actually did. He has the money and Collins wasn't giving me what I wanted, so I thought I could try him. Not like, be so into him."
"You are really out of your mind. I can see that. Maybe, your boyfriend should hear this."
"No no no no Juwie. You can't do that to me please. Don't let him hear this, please." She pleaded with me.
"That's if you tell me all I need to hear, if you don't, well, I have no choice." I answered. Knowing fully well that I won't even involve myself in their relationship.
"Okay okay. I will tell you. He invited me to have a drink with him in a bar. I went there and he gave me an expensive wine to drink. After a while, he excused himself and said he wants to take a call, so I was left alone."
"And, after that? I asked, not satisfied with the answer she gave me.
"Nothing happened again. I cannot remember what happened, if anything actually did after that." She answered scratching her hair.
"Clarinet, the driver that brought us home saud that you were drugged. You were behaving like someone who was running mad. I was glad I got you out of there before anything bad happened to you."
"Are you being serious right now?
"Yes, that's true. Well, uhm, someone called you while you were asleep, he said his name is Jide." I said casually, waiting to get my suspicion confirmed.
She acted shocked when I mentioned the name, but I pretended I didn't see that. She was uneasy after that and I knew immediately that something was not right somewhere. She was hiding something from me and I would definitely find that out.
"What did he say to you when you picked it up? Did you tell him your name? She asked curiously.
"No, I didn't because I didn't pick up the call." I answered reluctantly.
"Ohh okay. Well, I will talk to him later on, when u am much better." She replied, this time more at ease.
I didn't want her to feel so comfortable if she was actually hiding something. So, I was going to do something that will bring the truth out of her.
"Clarinet, I want to ask you a question, and I want you to tell me the truth." I said, staring at her.
She looked a bit frightened, but composed herself. "Okay, what you want to ask me?
I got up from the chair I was sitting, then walked closed to her. "That guy, Jide, that called you, is he my ex-boyfriend?
