Chapter Twenty-three

Haig
I knew that whatever Cain would tell me, his sins were difficult to forgive. He was the reason why I made my own sins. I'm not in a difficult situation if he did not show his ugly face to me. If he truly wanted to assist me in breaking the curse, why won't he just talk to me instead of blasting in my ear like a machine gun? Maybe it is a mistake that I always disagree with every word that he wants to say. I'm allowing his words to enter my ear and pass through the others. I made him mad and irritated as a reply to the words that came out from his mouth. Though I will scold him, he still has words to say, and he was just talking with me the whole day. He would never give up as long as he could not get my attention, and it seemed that he was a tireless spirit. I don't know, maybe his real intentions are to get my attention, trust, and conspire with him.
Cain has been following me wherever I go since the morning. Sometimes, if he makes me angry, I talk back to him because the words want to get out of my mouth by themselves. The people around me might think that I am a crazy boy because I am talking alone. He was adding more problems to my life. He was talking to me, though we are still having a class, and that is making me more irritated because I cannot focus on our lessons.
We are now walking on the street back home. I realized that it becomes boring if nobody is talking to me. Maybe it is time to talk with Cain insensately about what he really wants from me. I also want to know more about the curse and how to get rid of it. So that he will stop following me like a shadow—or more than a shadow—because even though there's no light, he still shows.
I don't have a friend anymore. I don't know what happened to France Lim. He has stopped talking to me since he totally stopped schooling. I know that he is always there in his house. He was just playing a game and it seemed that he did not care about the world, but though he had changed, I still believed that we were still friends. Though I will say that I don't need a friend to live in this world, and if there is someone who wants to be friend with me, then I will accept it, it is also okay if no one, I admitted that life is more sweeter if we have a friend.
"Haig, I know what you are thinking right now. I noticed that you don't have any friends and you are always alone. If you want, I can be your friend. Just think about it," Cain said.
I wanted to tell him that I did not want to be friends with him, but when I tried to speak, what a motherf*cker that there was no sound coming out of my mouth. I don't know what is happening to me, but I tried to speak many times, but I really can't. It came to my mind that maybe Cain had totally made me mute because I was always making him bad with my words. He was so cruel that he added another problem that I don't know how to solve.
"You are lulled there. What's wrong?" He asked, innocently.
He seemed innocent enough that he did not know why I did not reply to him. It is difficult to believe that he does not have a connection to the reason why I cannot speak. He was the only one who fought with me today because I am always kind to others. Moreover, he was the only one who could perform magic, and there were no other people who could do this to me.
I opened my mouth and tried to say that I did not want to be friends with him because he was so wicked. I don't need a friend because I already have two. They are Leona and Jay Zschech. Cain is just a problem for me, and he cannot be a friend because he is a foe. Consequently, I remembered the poem that was told by teacher Jayne Salvador, and written by the great poet William Shakespeare.
"He that is thy friend indeed, he will help thee in thy need: If you are sad, he will weep: If you awaken him, he will be unable to sleep: Thus, of every grief in his heart, he will bear a part. These are certain signs to know a faithful friend from a flattering foe."
I realized that I needed to hear Cain's explanation before judging him. Maybe I needed to consider him too, though he had not considered me before. He might have a reason why he put a curse on me, and that is what I really need to hear. I need to hear all of the words that he wants to say. There are many things I don't understand if I just let his words enter my ear and pass by from one side. So instead of saying that I don't want to be friends with him, I got a pen and paper from my backpack. I wrote down on the paper that I wanted to be friends with him. Maybe he was just a flattering foe, but the truth is that he was a faithful friend. Though he was a spirit, there is also a possibility that he had a conscience that was prosecuting him because of the mistake that he made to me.
I gave the paper to Cain and let him read it. "You want to be friends with me?" He asked. "But why did it seem that your mind had changed?"
I got the paper from his hand and wrote down something on it—the word 'flattering foe.' I handed the paper to him and let him read it. "Flattering foe?" he asked. His face seemed to tell me that he was confused about it.
I tried to say, "I mean that you might be a faithful friend instead of a flattering foe." I was surprised when my voice came back.
Maybe it was not true that my voice had gone and it was just a hallucination, so I did not ask Cain about this thing. He might be angry at me if I tell him that I suspected him that he was the one who muted me, and he will totally do it.
"I also want to say something to you—that 'sorry' because I am the one who muted you, because I am thinking that you will talk back bad words to me again."
"What—you? Why did you muzzle me? Don't you know that it was difficult to be muzzled? Why won't you mute yourself so that you can feel the feeling that you cannot speak?" I said in a mad manner.
"I am sorry. I did not mean to do it. Are you angry?"
"No, I am not angry. I already knew that you were the one who muted me because there is no one else or someone who can do it except you."
"How about your words? Do you really want to be friends with me?"
"Of course, I don't want it!"
"What? Why?" He asked, dementedly.
"Of course I don't want to be not friends with you."
"So, you also mean that you are trusting and conspiring with me?"
"Maybe, but you should tell me first why you put this curse on me. I need and deserve an explanation because it is me who you cursed."
Thereafter, Cain told me the real reason why he gave me the curse. He said that he just wanted to get rid of the curse that came from the powerful spirit. I was wondering if it was a good enough reason why he did it, or if I just did not understand what he meant.
"But what kind of curse that was given to you by the powerful spirit that you had to cursed me too?" I asked.
"It was not just a simple curse. My wife and I could not go back to the place of spirits. It has been thousands of years since we last strolled in this world, searching for someone who could help us to get back from the place where we suitably are," Cain explained.
"Do you have a wife?" I asked.
"Yeah, she was also cursed by the powerful spirit that I mentioned to you a while ago."
"So if you really have a wife, then where is she?" I queried it.
"She had been strolling in other parts of the world to search for someone who could also help her to get rid of the cursed powerful spirit, so that we could both go back to the place of spirits. I am hoping that she can also find someone like you, a brave, strong, and powerful human, who can sacrifice themselves to help her."
"Don't you know that there are just a few people that are willing to sacrifice themselves for others? I just want to tell you that I am not one of them."
"Yeah, I know that there are just a few people who are willing to help others, but I believe that you are one of them. I've been watching you for many years, and I know that you are willing to help others."
"So you also knew many things about me?" I asked.
"Yeah, I know that you have a feeling for your teacher. I also know that you have killed the mother of your friend, and I am telling you that you cannot make yourself clean to me, else I will tell your friend that you are the one who killed his mother. I am sure that he will retaliate against you for what you did to him. He will definitely kill you and maybe your mother if he knows the truth."
"That's what you should not tell him. I'd rather sacrifice myself and die than have him kill my mother!" I exclaimed.
"That's what I told you, you can sacrifice yourself for others."
"Yeah, I can sacrifice myself for my mother because I loved her so much, unlike you. If you tell France that I am the one who killed her mother, I know that he will understand why I needed to do that and it was because of you. He was my best friend, and I trusted him more than you," I said, trying to explain.
"You are so confident while saying it and that is what I like from you because you are not worrying too much about those other people. That is the kind of person I need. I require the assistance of those who can assist me in returning to the realm of spirits. If you help me, I will also help you."
"You can help me with one thing only, and that is to get rid of the curse that came from you. But I don't know how I can help you to go back to where you came from."
"You can help me in many ways, but every way is very difficult, and there is no easy way because it will get harder every day."
"What do you mean?" I asked, curiously.
"Every way required to sacrifice lives, and these ways can also assist you in removing the curse that I unintentionally placed on you."
He's sounds interesting. Maybe I can trust him this time, because it seems that my freedom also lies in it. I cannot only help him to go back to the place of spirits, but I can also help myself to get rid of the curse. If he definitely wants to go back to the place where he came from, it also means that he doesn't want to hurt people. He may only need to rest because he had previously stated that he had been walking around in this world for thousands of years.
"I am sure that you are telling the truth to me. Tell me how to get rid of this curse and also the ways that can help you go back to the place of spirits," I said.
"I won't make it longer. I am telling you that I'm not the only one who could benefit in this way, but you can also benefit from it. If you can do this thing, you will not feel difficulties because of the curse, and not just that, you can also help me to solve my problem. There are just so many things that are hard to sacrifice, and I am sure that you may feel some difficulty about it, but don't worry too much because it is always difficult at first before it is easy."
"Uh-huh, so tell me what is it?"
"The way that I am going to tell you is the only thing that we can both benefit. I am also telling you that if you won't do this, you are telling me that you are willing to tolerate the curse to live inside your body and to control you as long as you are alive."
"You are telling me that there is no other way to get rid of your curse except to use it?" I asked.
"Yeah, there are many things you can use to help me solve my problems, but there is only one thing that you can do to save yourself from the curse. You cannot live longer in this world if you don't do this thing. I know that the curse is quickly affecting your whole body. Sooner or later, it will attack you again, and not just that, it could also enter your brain and heart and you will feel nothing, hear nothing, see nothing, and you will be able to do nothing when that time comes. Everything you have will be lost, and it will control your body to search for someone to kill."
