"See Pam, let take a walk around to lesson the boredom of standing here. After all the driver cannot make it back in less than an hour time" she declared boldly as she dragged Pamela alone. As they were about to go the worn out old lady who sat near them questioned. "Girls, where are you heading to? Before long, the driver should be back. Nobody will wait for your return when it time to go. so you better stay around or else.." She did not finish her statement before she carried her little frame to join the company of some other passengers. Nearly uncertain, the two friends answered each other questions wanting to know more about themselves. Ego parents were both business association from lmo. They lived in Benin city, she was attending Emotan primary school and was in her third year. Pamela attending Agbado primary school was a year ahead of her. By this time they had walked to a gambling spot popularly referred to as "kalo Kako" as they made up their minds to watch a little and not to participate. As the game progress, they were drawn to participate. "Can not we play a game, it is only five naira. I have ten naira with me. Just think! Five naira is not a big risk, how much extra have you?" asked Ego trying to persuade Pamela into playing the game. " I have fifteen Naira which can be spent on something better, my mom warned me against playing this game of "Kako Kako" A lot of people have a sad story to tell concerning it" Pamela continued, laying emphases on every word . Just to divert Ego attention she brought up a suggestion "we might help some of those women to choose the right card, since our eyes are sharper as to playing, I refuse " She folded her hands in a matter of fact way and looked ahead of them indifferently. Ego agree. The two girls help a woman to choose a red smudgy looking card, the woman won thirty naira from her initial five naira after three games , she left even with out thanking the children. They lingered around delighting in helping a lot of people but each left with out a mare show of gratitude, not to mention rewarding them , Pamela suddenly resined. "Look Ego ! We have helped other seven people each getting extra money and none losing. I now see sense in what you said. Just think,! five naira is not big risk " both friend laughed heartily and made to take a plunge. Ego placed her card on the board, chose a red card and won ten naira. Pamela also placed her five naira on the board, unfortunately she anxiously chose the wrong card, then lost. Ego comforted her friend, while kicking her left thumb and told her to let them go back to the bus. Pamela not wanting to trade her chance of winning with anything else, felt cheated, she declared. "Until l get back my money, I am going nowhere! You cheat ! You have twenty naira while I have only ten naira and you are glad." Stubbornly, Pamela placed her five naira on the game board only to lose again. She burst out crying. She sword that she would not go back to the bus until She got her money in full. Ego claiming to be a lucky player, decided to help Pamela to play with her last five naira, she played twice for Pamela and on the long run, Pamela ended up with twenty naira and smiled broadly again. "Thank you" said Pamela "let us go, else the bus might leave us". "No! screamed Ego "you have won . what about me? you cheat! I must play again otherwise I am not going anywhere, we can have equal amount". Annoyed, Pamela waited for Ego to play again. Ego blustered and dropped all her money on the game board. The bell struck and Ego was declared the winner with forty naira to home. Enviously, Pamela placed all her money on the board. she chose a card with shaky hands. When the man finished ringing the bell, he waited patiently for the players to open their cards. She waited to see if her counterparts lost, quite unfortunately a skinny woman, who had baby on her back, jumped up, swirled round and danced she obviously won the game. Pamela know that she has lost. Dejectedly, she threw away the annoying card , then sat under a near by tree, crying. "I am sorry Pam, you should have asked me to help you play. See now you have lost. Better come along, what do you think the time is ? said Ego getting impatient. "Shut up" flared up Pamela "I am going nowhere, my money was bigger than your when we came down here. Now you are going home with tens of Naira, but what about me.. what about me?"she yelled. Proudly, Ego waved her money to and fro , jumping, laughing and mimicking a catwalk. scornfully she cried out. "How dare you ask me to shut up, you this unfortunate tiny girl. Do not I help you play for the first time?" she scorned and continued "Die in agony, I will play more than once, I will win bigger things, Then I shall go into the bus and leave you behind." She laughed, shaking her big torso like a bloated goat and moved away to play more games and make more money. Pamela enveloped in her grief cried. "I am sorry for laughing at you, I should have known, know now I have lost all my money " cried the bewildered Ego spreading her palm on her laps . They both became miserable. And again united in their misfortune. Hard able to contain their sorrow, the two defeated girls walked back to where the bus had been. "It was here!" panicked Pamela pointing at the spot where the red bus had been. "I do not think so, let move forward" Ego suggested hopefully, they kept moving for a long time. Yet there was no parking red bus in sight. They decided to ask questions concerning the where about of the red bus as they again moved backward . They only got a daft answers as they moved. It was when they got to the spot, where they thought the bus was that they got a terrifying answer from an orange seller. "It have been long they left after the mechanic have repair the bus. They were looking for the two of you , the passengers told the driver to take them to Benin, after he should come back to carry them. Where have you people being?" asked the orange seller angrily. "But why what' is the time now, did we stay so long?" Ego lamented lamely , staring onto the main road. Pamela looked at her wristwatch and tried to do some mental calculation. Quickly she sat on the ground and tears dropped from her eyes. while she spoke, her voice had turned faint . She felt stupid and dejected. "We spent approximately an hour and thirty minutes. What will become of us if the driver does not come back for us, our luggage is even in the bus . we do not have any extra money on us. My parents will be waiting for my arrival, my mother warned me, but Satan tempted me and like Eve I fell . Now I am s victim of circumstances Ego, I wish I never knew you!" Ego said nothing but looked on with tears soaked eyes. She glared at the road continuously while Pamela rattle on
