Chapter forty eight

Sonia started to act strangely, a bit fierce and like she was trying to recall something.
"Sonia, what is it? Sonia, please calm down, calm down please." I pleaded, still oblivious of what was happening exactly and the confusion kept me blank.
The nurse said I should hold her down while she ran out of the room to go call for help.
I faced Sonia again, trying to keep her quiet. She gripped my dress with force and seriously, I got so scared that moment. I thought my friend had gone mad or something of the sort.
"Jessica, Jessica I think I am trying to remember what happened last night. It's coming like a flash. I can see myself crying and moving from house to house."
Oh my goodness! That's good news and that's bad news as well. Goodnews because, we definitely have to find those kids. Bad news, because she might start behaving wilder than before.
"I think you will recall better if you stop acting weird, take a deep breathe and remain cool." I said to her.
She nodded positively and sat uprightly, without saying any word.
She seemed not to grasp the whole idea of how it started. So, I thought, what if I just tell her what really happened last night, perhaps that will jolt her memory back to normal.
I thought of a medical explanation for her condition. How could she possibly have a loss of memory just because she fainted. Did she hit her head? Or has she been having this for sometime and maybe kept it away from me? Uhhh! I sighed.
She looked at me for a little while, then she asked why I was sighing.
"Jessica, what is the problem? Why are you sighing? By this time, she had stopped thinking or trying to recall what had happened last night.
"Sonia, why shouldn't I. There is fire on the mountain to be honest and it just started and I don't know how that fire will be quenched." I answered her, preventing myself from crying as I could feel the rear forming in my eye.
Sonia noticed that I was hiding something from her. That was one thing we knew we couldn't do to eachother. It was very easy for us to catch ourselves if we any of us was lying.
"Is it too bad? She asked calmly.
"Yeah, it is, very very bad and I am sure even if it wasn't the exact reason why you fainted last night, it must be a part of it." I replied.
"Tell me what is it, I promise I won't get hostile or mad at you."
"That's not all, promise you won't do anything stupid or act rashly without thinking, or run off without letting anyone know your whereabouts." I said sternly to her.
"Well, that's tough, this must be really bad for you to quote all these." She answered, cupping her jaw with her right hand. "Okay, uhm, I promise, I won't do any of the above mention." She answered finally.
"What are the above mentioned? I asked intentionally.
"No doing stupid things as you always term it, erm, no acting rashly without thinking, then... What was the last one? I think it just skipped my mind."
"Don't run off without informing anybody of your destination."
"Okay, I won't run off without letting anyone know, I promise to do all of that. So, can you spill the bean? I'm dying suspense already." She complained.
"Okay, I will tell you..."
Coincidentally, the nurse Gift sauntered in with two other nurse and Doctor Kenny.
"I thought you said there was an emergency in this room. I can't see anything, why? Did you just throw a tantrum nurse Gift?
"No, no sir. She was...."
Doctor Kenny waved her off and walked up to us both. I stood up and greeted him.
"Doctor Kenny, good morning sir. How are you doing this morning?
"I am very okay, thank you for asking. Hope you enjoyed your night? He asked.
Of all questions, why did he have to ask that. My night was very horrible of course. "Sir, my night was the best." I answered.
He gave me this long stare. "Are you being serious?
"Sir, I was only kidding, it was horrible."
Everyone in the room laughed at that, though it was just a short one, because within few seconds, it died out.
"Mrs. Sonia. How are you doing? Do you still feel dizzy again?
"No, I don't feel dizzy anymore, but I can't remember things very well." She answered.
"Why is that sir? I asked inquisitively.
"Ohh that. It's just temporal. Don't force yourself to remember things or you'll tend to forget. It's a side effect of the sleeping injection you received, but it will wear off before the end of today and you will be back to normal." Doctor Kenny replied.
"Are you sure I will be better before the end of today? Like, that's a fact and not your thoughts? Sonia asked him.
He smiled at her knowingly and said, "ma'am, I am the doctor here. I treat this almost everytime, so you have to believe whatever I say. Like I said, it is only temporal and will wear off by the end of the day. Also, don't try to think too much, for your own good."
"Okay sir. Thank you."
"Good! Nurse Gift will take over from here, then I will send some drugs for you to take for the meantime, till you come back for your diagnostic test."
"So, I am allowed to go back home today? Sonia asked him.
"Well, yeah. You will be discharged this afternoon if you pass the supervision you'll be out under. If you do, you will be allowed go home."
Sonia looked at me and smiled childishly. I smiled back at her, though it was a fake. Going back home is more like resuming a horror event you escaped sometime before.
"Doctor, I will be glad if I am discharged today, so I can get back to my family. Also, that would mean I won't miss work tomorrow." She said, beaming is harmless smiles.
"Are you really talking about work right now? You are yet to be discharged and all you know is work work work. What kind of a workaholic are you? I complained bitterly, frowning.
Sonia turned to face me, then she lowered her voice and replied, "Come on Jess, I am no workaholic, but I am the manager of a company, come on. I can't just skip work just like that." She defended.
"So you will die working for a company just because you were made manager or what? I asked angrily.
"Jess, who is talking about dying now? Keep that out of the discussion and stop mentioning it. No one is dying okay."
Doctor Kenny saw what was happening and came to the rescue. "Hey ladies, all these scenes you are creating here won't help matters. Mrs. Sonia, you are not allowed to involve in arguments, go to work, do stressful jobs or work, carry heavy things or do any tough task till this week elapse. It will help us monitor your response to the medications that will be prescribed for you."
"Okay sir, sorry about that." Sonia apologized.
"We are sorry sir. Please, pardon our misgivings, we act like kids at times."
"Ha ha ha ha ha, you two remind me of my friend and I. We usually work together till he was transferred to a different state."
I smiled at that. "It's nice to hear that sir." I answered.
"So, uhm, I think this is all for now. If there is any need for something more, I will be in my office. I will communicate the rest information to nurse Gift and she will tell you about it. Hope that is okay?
"Yes sir. Thank you." Sonia answered.
Doctor Kenny left with the other two nurses who came into the room with him previously.
"So, at this juncture I'm afraid I must continue with my job ma'am. Hope that is okay with you, Mrs. Sonia?
Sonia nodded and gave her a go ahead. Nurse Gift walked gently towards her and continued from where she stopped before she left earlier. The way she acted, I could tell that she was scared of Sonia, afraid that she might start the funny act she displayed previously.
When Nurse Gift was done checking her pulses and her temperature, heart rate on the electrocardiogram and the usual local way, she proceeded to administer the injection in her. I noticed she was shivering as she tried to inject Sonia and that was a risky thing. So, I called to her attention.
"Nurse Gift, are you okay? You, don't seem too good.
"Well, I think I didn't have enough sleep last night, so It is giving me a side effect.
"Alright, you should go and rest when you are done with whatever you are doing well. I think you will have more strength."
"Thanks, thank you." She answered and faked a smile at me.
I waited patiently for her to be done, so I can continue my discussion with Sonia.
