Chapter 113: The Thief

The three guys and the woman stopped laughing. They might not know that those zombies had a leader and those zombies would vanish once their leader died. But it seemed like I was wrong, as they laughed again, perhaps thinking that I had already lost my mind for what I was talking about.
"That's enough, Lil," Cain interrupted. "Stop trying to help people who don't want to be helped."
"But—" I wanted to say something.
However, the guys and the woman took their knapsacks from the ground and said goodbye. They thanked me for making them laugh in this gloomy world and walked away.
"Wait!" I shouted, but they didn't stop.
"They don't believe in you, Lil. People who have experienced a lot of hardships think that this world is cruel. They believe that being soft and showing emotions are weaknesses," Cain said.
"I just want to help them. It doesn't matter if they didn't believe me. Why wouldn't they give me the chance to help them?" I asked.
"Those who have suffered a lot don't know what help is. They've done everything by themselves without anyone's help, so your help doesn't matter to them," Cain replied.
"That's—" I couldn't explain how I felt. I didn't expect that there are people in this world that are hardened by suffering. Those storms turned them into rocks.
"We don't have much time left, Lil. Let's find the leader of the zombies and kill it before someone else steals it again," Cain said.
We walked toward the zombies and fought with them. I covered my fists with magic and punched those zombies in their heads. I used water magic to wash them away. There was only one left, a huge zombie.
Its eyes were as white as milk. Its mouth and cheeks were covered in blood. It was holding a dead guy without a head. It ate it like delicious salad.
"Gross!" I felt sick in my stomach just by looking at it.
"You have to kill it before it'll kill you, Lil," Cain said.
"Got it!"
I summoned a huge fireball and threw it at the huge zombie. The zombie shrieked in pain. The ground trembled as it fell down. It almost vanished from the fire. Its skin was scorched. I didn't feel guilty at all for killing the dead.
Cain walked toward the corpse, but something stopped him. His legs were bound by vines. There was a girl that suddenly appeared in front of the corpse. She looked familiar, then I remembered she was that girl I met on the island.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"The soul is ours. Don't get near me if you don't want me to kill your boss," the girl said.
I couldn't see it, but it seemed like she had a companion. Something like a ghost, similar to Cain. That ghost must be the one who stopped Cain.
"We're the ones who killed it, so you're not in the position to tell us that!" I exclaimed.
Cain had gotten rid of the vines and fought with someone I couldn't see. The skies became stormy as if it was about to rain. I watched Cain as he dodged the lightnings. I couldn't see whom he was fighting with, but I knew it was a strong opponent.
"So you were the one who stole my enemy?" I asked, approaching the girl.
"If I say yes, what will you do?" she asked.
"I'll kill you!" I used my imagination to move swiftly toward her, but I stopped when a fire appeared in front of me. It must be a trick. I used water magic to wash the fire.
The girl was shocked by what I did. But she kept standing, protecting the corpse of the zombie. She looked beautiful, but her actions were unforgivable, so I decided to do everything to defeat her.
"You'll never get the soul!" She exclaimed.
"I already told you that soul belonged to us. I'm giving you the chance to escape if you don't want to die," I said.
"Hell no! I'd never run away from an enemy. You have stolen my enemy, so I'll steal yours too," she replied.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Meanwhile, Cain continued to fight with the invisible enemy. They have created lots of holes in the ground. A very strong magic was coming towards us, so I activated a barrier. I didn't know why I saved the girl, but there was something I wanted to know from her.
"This is getting worse," I said.
"We have to stop them from fighting, or the world will end," the girl replied.
I knew it was a bad idea, but the situation required us to unite. We needed to stop our masters in order to save the world, and I guess saving the world was a common ground for us. I might not know or trust this girl, but she doesn't seem too evil.
"I'll tell my master to stop, and you tell yours too," I said.
"I didn't expect to listen to an enemy, but I'll do it to save the world," she agreed.
I deactivated the barrier and used my imagination to fly. I approached Cain and told him to stop. He asked me why, and I told him that I didn't want the world to end yet. There will be a lot of innocent lives involved if they continue fighting like this.
"That's not what I am talking about, Lil. Can you really just give up the soul of the zombie that you've killed?" Cain asked.
"Hell no, but I think there's a better way to do it. You don't have to destroy the world just for a single soul. Let's talk about it in a more respectful way," I said.
"Do you think they'll respect us? They have stolen our enemies, Lil. You can't trust them," he replied.
"I know it's difficult, but violence doesn't resolve violence. So, please, I beg you, stop fighting."
"Okay. I'll stop fighting, but you have to convince them to give the soul to us. If you can't do that, then we'll continue fighting until one of us dies," Cain said.
"Alright. I'll do my best."
I approached the girl and asked her to tell her master to give the soul to us, and then we'd let them go. She said that they didn't want to fight anymore and just suddenly disappeared. I didn't know what happened, but it seemed like they had lost the will to fight.
"Cain, the soul is yours; take it!" I shouted.
