Chapter 1: Jenna’s POV
The casino lights flickered like a chaotic symphony of colors, blinding and mesmerizing all at once. I leaned against the polished bar, nursing a glass of water while Aiden lost himself at the blackjack table. My heart raced, not from excitement but from anxiety. I glanced at the clock on the wall. It was nearly midnight, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that this night was about to take a turn I didn’t want to face.
I watched Aiden as he placed another bet, his fingers trembling with a mix of adrenaline and desperation. His smile seemed forced, a thin veil over the worry etched into his features. Just last week, he had promised me that he was done with gambling. Yet here we were, back in the same place, surrounded by the sounds of laughter and clinking chips, as if the casino itself was taunting us.
“Saw you here, Jenna,” a familiar voice called out. I turned to see Sara, my best friend, slipping onto the stool next to me. She raised an eyebrow, her expression a mixture of concern and disbelief. “You’re really going to let him do this again?”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “I thought he was serious about quitting, Sara. I really did.”
“Did you?” She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “He’s just using you as a crutch, you know that, right? You can’t keep sacrificing your happiness for him.”
I bit my lip, glancing back at Aiden. The sight of him grinning at the dealer—an unfamiliar, cocky confidence radiating from him—made my stomach churn. “I love him, Sara. I want to believe he can change.”
“Love doesn’t have to hurt this much, Jenna.” She placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “You deserve better than this.”
Before I could respond, Aiden approached, the excitement fading from his face as he caught sight of us. “What are you two talking about?” His tone was defensive, a hint of accusation in his voice.
“Just girl talk,” Sara replied, a playful smirk on her face that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “You know, how amazing it is that you keep winning.”
Aiden's smile faltered for a moment, but then he shrugged it off. “I’m just getting started. I think I’m on a lucky streak tonight.” He glanced at me, his eyes sparkling with a hint of mischief. “You should join me. I’ll show you how it’s done.”
I forced a smile, my stomach knotting at the thought. “Maybe later. I’m not really feeling it right now.”
“Don’t be such a buzzkill,” he said, his tone light but with an undercurrent of irritation. “Come on, Jenna. Just trust me. I’ve got this.”
The urge to roll my eyes was strong, but I held back. Instead, I met his gaze, searching for the warmth that used to be there. “Aiden, I—”
But before I could finish, a tall, confident figure stepped up beside Aiden. Felix Carter, with his charming smile and undeniable presence, interrupted. He was the kind of guy who commanded attention without even trying, and tonight he looked especially captivating in a tailored suit that accentuated his tall frame. I felt a strange mix of curiosity and unease wash over me.
“Hey, Aiden!” Felix greeted him with an easy grin, then turned his gaze toward me, his dark eyes assessing yet friendly. “Jenna, right? I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Uh, yeah,” I stammered, caught off guard by his directness. I could feel Aiden’s tension rise beside me as Felix extended a hand. “Nice to finally meet you.”
I shook his hand, surprised by the firm grip that felt strangely reassuring. “Nice to meet you too.”
Felix’s smile widened as he leaned casually against the bar. “Are you having fun tonight? I can’t help but notice you look a bit out of place here.”
I chuckled nervously, glancing at Aiden, who was glaring at Felix. “Just trying to keep an eye on my boyfriend,” I replied, a hint of defiance creeping into my voice.
“Ah, a good girlfriend,” Felix nodded appreciatively. “But don’t forget to look out for yourself, too.” His gaze shifted back to Aiden, an unspoken challenge hanging in the air.
Aiden’s jaw clenched, and I could sense the tension building between them. “We’re fine,” he replied, his tone sharp. “I’m just about to win big. You should stick around and see.”
“Or you could make a better bet,” Felix replied, his voice smooth but laced with a playful challenge. “How about we raise the stakes?”
I frowned, my heart racing as I caught the meaning behind Felix’s words. A bet? My mind flashed back to all the times Aiden had gambled away not just money, but pieces of our lives together. I didn’t want to be part of this—whatever it was Felix was suggesting.
“Guys, let’s not—” I began, but Felix cut me off.
“Let me make it simple,” he said, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. “How about Aiden bets you? If he wins, he keeps you. If he loses, You’re officially mine”
A silence fell over the bar, the gravity of Felix’s words sinking in. I felt as if the world around us had paused, the blaring sounds of the casino fading into the background. A bet on me? My heart raced with shock, disbelief, and a flicker of something else—was it excitement?
Aiden’s face twisted in disbelief, and anger flickered across his features. “You can’t be serious, Felix,” he spat, looking between me and Felix. “You’re not betting her like she’s some prize.”
“No, I’m not,” Felix replied smoothly, his gaze unflinching. “But it’s a high-stakes world, Aiden. You’re either all in or out. What’s it going to be?”
I took a step back, feeling the air grow heavy with tension. This wasn’t just a gamble for Aiden; it was a gamble for my life, my future. I could feel my heart pounding, torn between my loyalty to Aiden and the unsettling thrill of what Felix was suggesting. What did I want?
As Aiden struggled to respond, I caught Felix's gaze. He looked different than Aiden—confident, self-assured, and, for some reason, genuinely intrigued by me. Maybe this was a chance to break free from the chaos Aiden brought into my life.
But was I ready to take that risk?
“I know you’re known for being a good gambler around here,” Felix said smoothly, his voice carrying a challenge that sent a chill down my spine. “Prove it. Let’s play. If you win, you get everything, including Jenna. But if you lose, Jenna is officially mine.”
The words hung heavy in the air, each syllable striking like a drumbeat in my chest. I could hardly believe what I had just heard. Aiden’s expression shifted from disbelief to anger, a storm brewing in his eyes as he took a step closer to Felix.
“Are you serious? You think I’m going to wager Jenna like she’s some prize to be won?” Aiden shot back, his voice low but edged with fury.
I felt a surge of frustration and panic. “Aiden, don’t do this! This isn’t a game!” I exclaimed, but my words fell on deaf ears as Aiden squared his shoulders, seemingly igniting with a reckless resolve.
Felix shrugged, a playful smirk dancing on his lips. “It’s simple, Aiden. You either step up and show you’re worth it, or you walk away with nothing. But you already know what happens if you back down.”
My heart raced, torn between the two men in front of me. Aiden’s bravado felt like a double-edged sword—while I admired his fierce loyalty, this gamble could shatter everything we had left. I glanced at Felix, whose confidence was unsettling yet oddly captivating.
“Fine,” Aiden spat, clenching his fists at his sides. “I’ll play. But don’t think you can just take her like that.”
Felix’s eyes sparkled with amusement, as if he had been waiting for this moment. “Then it’s settled. Let’s take this to the high-stakes table.”
As Felix turned to lead the way deeper into the casino, I felt a mix of anger and despair welling inside me. “Aiden, this is insane! You can’t risk everything like this!”
He met my gaze, his expression softening for just a moment. “Jenna, I’ll win. I promise. Just trust me.”
But how could I trust him when he had already put our relationship on the line? I wanted to shout, to scream at him to reconsider, but the defiance in his eyes was unwavering.
We followed Felix through the labyrinth of flashing lights and clinking chips, the atmosphere thick with tension. I tried to focus on the crowd around us, the laughter and cheers of gamblers, but all I could think about was the absurdity of this bet. My heart raced as we reached a private high-stakes table, secluded from the bustling noise of the main floor.
Felix gestured for us to sit, and Aiden took a seat across from him, his jaw set in determination. I lingered behind Aiden, a lump forming in my throat as I realized just how serious this was.
“Let’s make this interesting,” Felix said, his tone playful yet dangerously serious. “How about we make it best out of three? That way, you’ll really get to prove yourself.”
Aiden nodded, a fire igniting in his eyes. “Fine. Let’s do it.”
I looked at Aiden, trying to convey my fears through my gaze. This was not just about pride; it was about me—my life, my future. And yet, I felt trapped in this whirlwind of decisions I didn’t make.
Felix smiled, a confident grin that sent a shiver down my spine. “Alright, let’s get this started. Dealer, three hands, please.”
The dealer stepped forward, ready to shuffle the cards, and I stood there, the weight of the moment crashing down on me. Aiden was about to gamble everything—his pride, our relationship, and me.
As the cards were dealt, I could only watch, my heart pounding in my chest, unsure of what the outcome would bring. A part of me wanted to believe in Aiden, to trust that he would come out on top. But another part—a quieter, more rational voice—whispered that this was a game he could lose.
And if he lost, I would belong to Felix.
The first round began, and I held my breath, praying for the best while fearing the worst.
