CHAPTER 60: BOON OR BANE?

The young man went to the farm he tills, as usual. His grandmother told him to wait but he doesn’t know how long. His grandmother is the only one who was left in town to believe in the prophecy of the “Saint”. People in the neighboring town from the Dagras Province still believe in the old Gods, but people in Ordinarius Province thought the Gods have already forgotten about them and so the prophecy was forgotten, little by little, until yesterday, when the people in the neighboring town of Catalunan came to their house to hear the prophecy.
As he was dragging his feet along the dried, rocky road, his eyes caught something on the grassy areas. Was that a person? He rushed towards it and he was shocked to see a woman lying there, could be sleeping or left half-dead. The woman was wearing a hospital gown. But there were no nearby hospitals in the area, so where does this woman come from?
He went to check if she was still breathing. He let out a sigh of relief. He lifted her and carried the woman home. As he was approaching, his grandmother saw him carrying the woman and without hesitation, his grandmother knelt on the ground, look up and raised her arms in the sky.
“I know you will never forget your people. Praise be unto the Gods! Thank you for giving me the chance to see the Saint. I can finally laid to rest.”
“Grandma!” the young man blurted out, shocked by what the old woman said. He looked down to see that the woman was still sleeping.
“Bring her in and we will take care of her until she wakes up. But until then, do not let anyone know she’s here.” The old woman said.
The young man nodded and brought the woman in. He laid her on his bed.
“You can go back to the farm. Remember what I have told you.”
“Yes Grandma.” He said and left.
The old woman went to fetch a basin with water to clean her up. She then proceeded to look for any decent clothes that would fit the Saint. She must look presentable when she wakes up.
*****
It has been 2 days but they were still digging for the dead bodies. Freeman and Cain oversee the operation while the other MARVELOUS members were continuing the search and rescue of Jean. Tin, Benedict, and Rodrigo continued their side mission.
“How many dead bodies are we still looking for?” Freeman asked one of the agents.
“We’re still looking for 5 bodies, sir. We also discovered that this used to be an underground facility, so we could assume that the 5 bodies were in a deeper area.”
“Let’s keep digging then. Do we have ID on those 25?”
“They were the missing people in Ordinarius, sir. They were all registered in the system.”
                “Now we found them.”
“Sorry to interrupt sir, Eagle is on the other line.” Cain notified Freeman.
                Freeman took the phone.
                “Agent.”
                “Eagle reporting, sir.”
“What’s the status of Cardinal and Lovebird?”
“They are both stable sir, but still unconscious. According to the assessment of Nightingale, they suffered severe internal injuries. There are also traces of a more advance substance but similar components with the NXS12.”
“Then we must monitor them both. Report immediately when they wake up.”
                “Yes sir.”
“For now, focus on looking after Lovebird and Cardinal.”
                “Yes sir.”
Freeman ended the call. Anthony and Aiden went to him.
“You all look terrible. Go home and get some rest.” Freeman told them.
“Jean is still missing. We can’t afford to rest.” Anthony said.
“It’s not a suggestion, Stanton. Also, I would like you to meet someone who saw Jean inside the facility.”
“Did you capture Fienes?” Aiden asked.
“Unfortunately, we do not have evidence that Fienes is behind Jean’s disappearance. The guy was too cunning.”
“Then if that person indeed saw Jean in the facility, we must talk to them.” Aiden said.
They left Freeman and gathered the others.
                “Cain.” Freeman called.
                “Sir.”
“Tell Eagle to meet you in the AEGIS Headquarters.”
“Yes, sir.” She said and left.
*****
When the MARVELOUS arrived at the compound, Cain was already there with Avocet and a guy.
“We know that guy!” Pierre exclaimed and looked at Aiden.
“Wasn’t he the bar guy?” Jon asked.
“Jean’s brother!” Pierre ran towards the guy.
                “Brother?” Vera asked.
                “Adoptive.” Simon replied.
“Hey man!” Pierre happily said and shook the guy’s hand.
“Hey yo, what’s up, man?” Winston returned the same energy.
“You know each other?” Cain asked Winston.
“We met. He was with Jean when she came to visit me in the bar.” Winston answered.
                Cain nodded.
“Why are you here with Agent Cain?” Pierre asked.
“Are you the person Freeman was telling us about?” Aiden asked.
Winston’s aura changed from being friendly to being calm and reserved.
“Deputy Winston Butler, sir. I was asked to report to you. That might be the case.”
“We’ve met again.” Aiden shook Winston’s hand.
“Freeman said you saw Jean inside the facility?” Anthony stated.
“I did, sir. I was on a mission.” He said.
“Let’s all go inside to discuss this.” Anthony said and they all went straight to the conference room.
                Inside the conference room…
“Before anything else, this is Deputy Winston Butler, one of the ALLIANCE’s member known as Eagle.” Cain introduced Winston to the group.
“So you know him, Simon?” Vera asked.
“Of course. But one of our pledge as an ALLIANCE member was to act as if we do not know each other in public.” He responded.
“That explains what happened before.” Pierre said. Simon nodded.
“You said you were in a mission, Deputy.” Aiden stated.
“Yes, sir. As Eagle, my main role as an ALLIANCE member was to oversee the welfare and whereabouts of my troop, as well as, oversee the activities of the people to maintain order in the system. When two of our members, Lovebird and Cardinal, were off the radar, I reported it to the Headquarters and that’s when I found out that Jean was also missing. So I asked my superiors to put me on the search and rescue mission.”
“But why we’re not informed about you during the Search and Rescue. Avocet and Ibis was included in the mission, and we are aware of them.” Anthony said.
“It was a solo mission for me, as they are my family, sir.” Winston answered.
“Okay, hang on. Will you clarify that part?” Nash finally said.
“Cardinal, also known as Detective Gary Butler, is my adoptive father, ma’am. Lovebird, also known as Marina Duque, is Jean’s adoptive mother. If you’re still wondering why we are family, my father and Jean’s mother were former colleagues and two of the best scientists of GUILD 15 years ago. When the facility fell, my father took me and Ms. Marina took Diane, whom you know now as Jean.” He explained.
“But why would Freeman agree that you go solo on this mission? And you infiltrated the facility without a problem. How would we know we could trust you?” Caleb asked.
“To answer your first question sir, I was a lab rat in the GUILD’s original facility, and I have acquired special abilities. To answer your second question.” He waved his hand and he shapeshifted to Fienes.
                They were startled.
“If you haven’t seen this person your whole life, you might say I am really him. But I can only shapeshift his physical attributes. The eye color are still mine.” He waved back to his original form. “To answer your third question, you don’t need to trust me. As long as my family trusts me, that’s enough for me. Just know that I would never betray the people who took me in.” he concluded.
“So Jean trusted you.” Nash said.
“She trusted me to bring her mom and my father to safety. When I came back, you were all there and the place was in ruins. I tried to look for her everywhere but she was nowhere to be found. But I can assure you, she had regained all the abilities she possessed when she was young which her mother tried to erase.”
“That explains the nxs12 she got in her purse.” Jon murmured.
“Her mother created that. But a few months ago, Fienes’ goons was able to lay their hands on one of the vials.”
“That also explains the message.” Jon murmured again.
“What message? Are you hiding something from us?” Vera asked.
“The day the fire broke out on Duque’s residence, we were with Jean. We accompanied her since Aiden asked me to look after Jean and Leinth. When we came to the house, no one was there but there was a letter on the counter. A secret code she decoded.it was stated in the decoded message that her mother left and it was dangerous if she contacts her. And she instructed her to get the vial in her purse.”
“Right, I remembered that note. Benedict read it aloud after we came home. That was the same day of the ambush, right?” Nash asked.
“Yes. And later that night, Jean was abducted.” Vera answered.
“What if we’re looking at this on the wrong way?” Anthony asked. “When did your members went missing?” Anthony asked Winston.
“They had been missing for 3 days before I was sent on the mission.” Winston answered.
“If they had been missing for 3 days… when did you rescue them?” Aiden asked.
“2 days ago, before the facility exploded.”
“When did you start your mission?” Nash asked.
“A day after I reported them.”
“If my calculations were right, that letter wasn’t written by Jean’s mom. It was written to lure Jean out. If I remember correctly, the letter says that her mom was gone since Friday, it didn’t say “left”. The ambush happened Monday after that, which was also Jean’s abduction. Winston reported them missing after 3 days, which was Tuesday.” Nash said.
                “Yes, ma’am.”
“We started the search and rescue by Wednesday since we do not have leads until Pierre was able to locate her scent. When did you find them?” Nash asked Winston again.
                “The day I rescued them.”
“2 days ago. But Jean was still missing. What if Fienes was able to get her before he fled?” Vera asked.
“He’s afraid of her. He won’t just capture her without any assurance that she cannot touch him.”
“Then we’re back to square one.” Aiden said.
                They all looked doomed.
“We think we know where to start looking.” Tin said.
They all looked at the opened door.
                “Where?” Anthony asked.
“Ever heard of a prophecy?” Benedict asked.
Leinth looked at Benedict.
“Catalunan.” Leinth blurted out.
