CHAPTER 65: THE ORB

Jean woke up early so that she can help prepare for her mom and her boss’ discharge from the infirmary. Winston picked her up at the compound’s gate. When he arrived, she immediately got in the car and Winston drove off.
“Why did you pick me up here? You’re always welcome at the compound.” she said.
“I know. But you know I don’t associate myself with a lot of people. Only a few chosen ones.” He smiled.
                “But you know them.”
                “Yet, they don’t know me.”
“Well, technically they know you. You worked with them during the rescue mission, right?”
“No, I did a solo mission.”
“I mean, when they finally rescued me. You gave them the coordinates, right?”
                He didn’t say a word.
“You do not want them to know who you are.”
Again, he didn’t say a word. She shrugged her shoulders and kept her silence. They kept their silence until they reached the Infirmary. When her mom and her boss saw them, they smiled at them.
“Hi guys! Are you ready?” she asked. She went to her mom and kissed her.
“Yes. I’m just fixing my things and we’re good to go. What happened to you both?” her mom noticed when Winston kept his silence.
“Did you two fight on the way here? Winston, did you fight with your sister?” her boss asked.
                “No.” he simply said.
                “Jean.” Her boss said.
“We really didn’t fight.” She said and smiled.
Marina and Gary looked at each other.
“What, you don’t believe us?” Jean asked and went to hug Winston. He hugged her back. “See? We’re okay. He’s just not in the mood. Besides, it’s early in the morning. You know he needed to work last night at the bar.”
“Oh right. Let’s get going then so he could get some sleep.” Her mom said and they picked up their things.
“Before we go, Freeman said to see him in his office.” Winston said.
“Let’s go then.” Her boss said and they all went out of the infirmary.
They went straight to Freeman’s office. Winston knocked.
“Come in.” Freeman said from the inside.
They went inside.
“How are you feeling?” Freeman asked.
“We're feeling better, sir.” Marina answered.
“Agent Lovebird, where are you going to stay?” He asked.
“I’ll be staying with Agent Cardinal and Agent Eagle, sir.”
“We’ll have a 24-hour surveillance team on your place to ensure your safety just in case the GUILD attacks again. Will you be okay in your place, Agent Cardinal? Or would you like a relocation?”
“We will be fine there, sir. Besides, you mentioned a 24-hour surveillance team.” Gary replied.
“Okay, then. You're good to go. Ms. Duque, can I have a word?” He asked.
Jean looked at the three.
“We'll wait for you outside.” her mom said. She nodded. They went out.
“I heard that you can already control your powers.” He said when they were alone.
“Yes sir. Dr. Banning said I might be ready for the assessment.” She stated.
“We'll schedule your assessment then.” He checked his calendar. “Your assessment will be on the 20th. That is the only free time I have on my calendar. Do you think you're ready by then?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Great to hear. I'll tell Stanton to prepare for your assessment. I'm looking forward to it.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”
“You are dismissed then. Good luck.”
She did a salute and she went out. She saw them talking seriously but when they saw her, they immediately stopped and her mom smiled at her.
“Let's go?” Her mom asked.
“Yeah. Let's get you home.” She smiled.
“What did Freeman tell you?” Her mom asked, as they were walking towards the parking lot.
“He just scheduled my assessment.” she said. They all got in the car. Winston drove away.
“Assessment for?” Her boss asked.
“Assessment to be a part of the MARVELOUS.” She replied.
They all went silent. They continued their travel silently until her mom cleared her throat.
“Do you really want to be a part of the team?” Her mom asked.
“Of course, mom. You're all agents. I think it's only fair that I, too, become one.” She said.
“As long as she is happy, why not?” Her boss asked.
“You know how dangerous our work is! Let alone her status. She's wanted back by the GUILD.” Her mom argued.
“Mom, it's fine. At least, now I will be prepared. Besides, I know what I'm capable of now. They can't just kidnap me again.”
“Don't worry, Ms. Marina. Fienes is afraid of what Jean can do. He won't just attack again without any reassurance that Jean cannot touch him. He's just a blabber.” Winston said.
“He's a strategist, Winston.” Marina argued again.
“Come on, Marina. Your daughter is not a child anymore. We need to let her decide now. Anyway, we are here and we don't need to hide her anymore. We just need to look after each other. Aside from that, there is a team ready to jump in to save our girl. It's not just us anymore.” Gary stated.
Marina sighed.
“Alright. But we need to be there when you will have your assessment.” She concluded.
“Of course, mom! You all need to be there. Aside from that, Mr. Stanton would like to invite you three at the compound tomorrow. I will be picking you up so don't ditch me.” She said.
“Why am I included?” Winston asked.
“Because you're my brother, duh.”
“They already met me. Can't it be dad and Ms. Marina only?”
“Nope. You need to be there.” Jean insisted.
“Ugh. Fine.” Winston said as he pulled up on the driveway. “Did you see it?” He asked as he turned off the engine.
“See what?” Jean asked.
“3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock.” Gary said.
“Apartment, 4th floor, 3rd window.” Her mom said.
She looked at the positions they mentioned. She didn't see anything. She used her thermal scanning ability. There really were people in those directions.
“Are they the surveillance team?” She asked. “They seemed normal. Their auras are stabilized.” She said.
“We still need to check. You can all get out of the car now. I will just make sure they are friends.” Winston said and disappeared.
“Let’s go.” Gary said and they all went out of the car and went inside the house.
“They are the surveillance team.” Winston said as they were putting their bags on the couch.
“Let’s eat some breakfast first before you go back to the compound.” her mom stated.
“I’ll cook.” she volunteered.
“No. you will burn the house down.” Winston disagreed.
“Excuse me?” she leered at him. He laughed.
“Let’s prepare some breakfast then.” Winston said and put his arm on her neck and playfully dragged her to the kitchen.
“Winston, you’re hurting your sister.” Gary shook his head.
“I didn’t.” he answered from the kitchen.
They prepared breakfast. After eating, Winston dropped her off at the compound. She went inside.
“Good morning, Jean! You’re just in time. Come, let’s have some breakfast.” Vera noticed her and went to her.
“Thank you, Vera, but I just had breakfast.” She politely declined.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I just came from the Infirmary because my mom and my boss got discharged this morning. We had breakfast at their house.”
“Oh, okay then.”
“I’ll just be in my room.” She said and went upstairs.
As soon as she entered her room, there was a purple orb of light floating in the middle of the room. She immediately closed the door and she heard a voice coming from it.
“Imparangarangko a dagiti mannakabalin laeng ti makakita iti daytoy. Ti gugugo nga sumarimetmet ti bagim ket adda kenkan iti nabayag a siglo. Saan daytoy ti umuna a biag a nagbiagkan. Adda pateg iti bagim a saan a pulos a mabaliwan wenno madadael. Magun-odmo ti amin a kayatmo. Sika ti dios/diosa a sapulmo. (I have manifested that all-powerful being will only see this. The energy you possess has been with you for centuries. This is not the first life you have lived. You carry a power in your body that can never be replaced or destroyed. You will get everything you ever wanted. You are the god/goddess you have been searching for.)”
“Amora…”
“Jean? Who are you talking to?” a voice behind her returned her in the present.
She turned around and she saw Pierre frowning at her.
“Pierre! Can’t you see the purple orb of light?” she asked.
“Uhmm… where?” he asked, still frowning.
“There.” She pointed at where it was. It was still gleaming.
“Imparangarangko a dagiti mannakabalin laeng ti makakita iti daytoy. (I have manifested that all-powerful being will only see this.)” the voice stated.
“You’re pointing at the ceiling, Jean. Are you okay?” he asked and touched her forehead.
“It already vanished.” She said, even though the orb was still floating.
“Well, you don’t have a fever. Did Doc Banning examined you?” he asked.
“I’m fine, Pierre. Why are you here, by the way?” she asked as she took her seat on her bed. He followed.
“What? Can’t I be with my best friend?” he asked as he laid on the bed.
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I just missed you. We thought we lost you forever.” He said and looked at her.
“I’m here now. And I know you will find me. But you know, if you can’t find me, I will find you.” She smiled at him and rubbed his arm. He took his seat.
“Why did they do that to you? Why are they so cruel?” he asked.
“Oh, Pierre you’re so naïve. But keep that innocence. It will save you from the harshness of this world.” She said.
“You’re talking as if we’re not the same age.”
“I remembered my past life, so…”
“So, you think you’re older.” He rolled his eyes.
“I mean, I’m literally older than you by a couple of months.”
“Yeah, whatever. So, are they coming tomorrow? I mean your family?” he asked.
“Yeah. My brother was hesitant to come. He’s shy but eventually, they all agreed to come.”
“Why would Winston be shy? We met him already not only as your brother but also as an ALLIANCE Agent.”
“He’s always like that. But don’t worry, he can be social if he needs to. He works in the bar after all.”
“Oh yeah right. So when will be your assessment with Freeman?”
“On the 20th. He said Mr. Stanton will prepare the necessary things for the assessment.”
“20th? Your birthday is on the 22nd, right?” he frowned.
“Yes. Why is it relevant?” she raised one of her brows.
“Well, there was a superstitious belief that you need to be very careful on or before your birthday. Aren’t you aware of that?”
She reluctantly shook her head.
“What?!? You stayed in Patag, right?”
“Yeah. But I’m not aware of that. Anyways, what could go wrong during my assessment, right?”
“I know you’re powerful but you still need to be careful.”
“I didn’t know you are superstitious.” She laughed.
“I was raised by my grandparents. You can’t blame me.” He laughed as well.
“Oh yeah, right.  My bad. By the way, I haven’t seen Premo since I came back.”
“Premo? You mean the robot?” he asked.
“Yeah. I named him Premo since he appeared as a premonition to Tin.”
“Ohhh… right. He’s at the HQ. Freeman took him in for repairs after your abduction and he was currently under AEGIS employment.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yep. Anyways, I just came here to check on you. I will go home and be back tomorrow for the meet up. I’ll get going.” He said and stood up.
“Thank you for checking up on me, Pierre. I missed you, too.” She smiled at him.
He smiled and went out. She took a nap.
“Nalipatam sa nga agur-uray nak kenka? (I think you forgot that I was waiting for you.)” the voice said.
She immediately opened her eyes and there it was again, floating in the ceiling. She took her seat.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“It’s not what I want. It’s what you need.” The voice said.
“Okay, what do I need?”
“You need me to unleash the greater power within you, phoenix enchantress.”
“Phoenix enchantress, huh?”
“That is what you are as a saint.”
“Saint, huh? I’m not a saint, nor an enchantress. I’m just Jean.” She said.
“Awaten nak a kas panangawat mo ken Amora. Maikkan ka iti bileg nga awan makapangruna. (Accept me as you have received Amora. You will be given powers no one can surpassed.)”
“If I am going to accept you now, what will happen?”
“You will be powerful as promised.”
“How powerful?”
“No one can ever defeat you.”
“That’s impossible.”
“All things are possible with me.”
“Can I bargain?”
“What do you wish to bargain?”
“Before I tell you my bargain, if I am going to accept you, what will you take from me?”
“Be a vessel to Amora. Make your body accessible for her whenever she wants to take over.”
“She promised not to do that.”
“In exchange, you will have a control over your powers.”
“What are my powers?”
“You know what they are.”
“What is she planning to do? Why do you suddenly want me to become a vessel for her?”
“She doesn’t want anything but to be freed. But she is you.”
“Alright. Can I tell you my bargain, now?”
“Are you accepting my offer?”
“It’s up to you. But I won’t accept you right now. I will be Amora’s vessel starting on the 20th. I will accept you during my assessment; that is my bargain.”
“Very well. I will see you on your assessment.”
And the orb vanished in the blink of an eye.
