CHAPTER 63: BACK AT LAST
When they arrived at the compound, Penelope, Freeman, Cain, Harold, and Winston were already waiting in the lounge. As soon as the jet opened its door, Jean saw Winston.
“Winston!” she called and ran towards him.
Winston ran towards her as well and they hugged as soon as they met half way. She cannot contain her tears anymore and so she cried so hard in her brother’s arms.
“I’m so glad you are safe. I’m sorry I wasn’t there when they rescued you.” He said as he tapped her back softly.
They stayed that way until all the team was able to get out of the jet and met with Freeman and the others. Jean pulled away from Winston and they both wiped her tears.
“Don’t worry, your mom and boss are already recovering. They are already safe.” He assured her.
“Thank you, Winston. Just so you know, when I woke up, you were the first person I called.” She smiled.
“As you should. I’m your brother after all.” Winston smirked.
They walked towards the team who were patiently waiting at the lounge.
“You owe me an explanation.” She told him.
“I think it’s my responsibility to give you that explanation.”
Jean looked at Freeman innocently.
“I’m glad you came back safe and sound, Ms. Duque.” Freeman continued.
“Thank you sir. I’m so glad to be back as well.” She smiled.
“If you’re feeling better, can we have a small talk?” he asked.
“Yes sir. I’m feeling better now.”
“Then, Cain and Butler, please join me and Ms. Duque in the conference room. Team, you need to get some rest. That’s an order.” Freeman said.
“We’ll talk later, Jean.” Penelope said and hugged her. Jean hugged her back and smiled at her.
Simon, Rodrigo, Benedict and Harold tapped Jean on her shoulder. The rest hugged her before they all went to their rooms. The four of them went to the conference room. Jean and Winston seated together while Cain took her seat on the other side of the table. Freeman stood in the middle.
“I know you are aware that your adoptive brother was in the facility where they held you.” Freeman began.
Jean nodded.
“That is because Winston Butler is an ALLIANCE Agent, Ms. Duque.”
She looked at her brother, amazed.
“And so is your mother, Dr. Marina Duque, and your boss, Gary Butler.”
“Wait… why don’t I know this? So, all this time, you knew my mother?” Jean looked at Winston, frowning.
Winston nodded.
“It is part of their pledge as an ALLIANCE member not to disclose anything and to act indifferently to one another when they go public.” Freeman explained.
Jean stayed silent. She was still processing the information she heard.
“Winston Butler’s main job is to keep tab on the whereabouts of the Agents under AEGIS and to keep tab on all the important people in Sagrado. He found out your mother and his father was missing the day you were kidnapped.” Freeman continued.
Jean was listening.
“That was when he also found out you were kidnapped and he asked to have a solo rescue mission for the three of you.”
Jean looked at Winston and he shrugged. She punched his left leg.
“Ouch!” he frowned at her.
“You idiot! I know you’re an agent but how could you possibly do a rescue mission on 3 people alone?” she leered at him.
“He’s better off doing solo mission actually, Ms. Duque. He’s Eagle after all.” Cain said.
Jean looked at Cain.
“Thank you for complementing my brother, Agent Cain, but it’s still not okay for me.”
“You really don’t remember who I am, Diane?” Winston asked.
She looked at him doubtfully.
“Why do you know that name?” she asked.
Winston held her hand and both their eyes turned white. He showed her the old facility; Doc Tessa and Roland wearing lab gowns; him and Diane being tested on; him playing with Diane; Diane bailing him out; Roland taking him out of the facility; Doc Tessa carrying Diane in her arms; and finally, Diane exploding the facility and burning it to the ground. They both gasped for air.
“Y-you’re S924…” she uttered.
“Yes.” He simply answered.
“W-why did I forget all of those things?” she asked.
“Ms. Marina made you take your vitamins, didn’t she?” he asked.
“Yes, every day since I was 5. But I stopped drinking it when I started working at the bar.”
“That vitamins was the nxs drug. She created it to help you forget. She asked me to drink it as well but I do not want to forget. And even if I took the medicine, it won’t work on me.”
“Why won’t it work?”
“Because that medicine was made specifically to suppress your memory, Jean. Doc Tessa was your attending Physician back in the facility. Mine was boss Gary. And he doesn’t want me to take the medicine as well.”
“But why would she do that to me?”
“Because you were young and powerful, Jean. And she wanted to hide you from the GUILD. That’s why she asked AEGIS for help.” Freeman answered her.
“So you mean to tell me, that she had been working with you for 15 years?” Jean asked Freeman.
“Both her and Gary. You working in the bar was planned so we could monitor you.” He answered.
Jean fell silent, then she sighed.
“How long have you been working for the AEGIS?” Jean asked Winston.
“10 years.” He answered.
“So, you taking me in as your sister… was it because of work?” she asked.
“No. That was really my own intention. I have treated you as my sister back when we were still in the facility and that didn’t change. And I have been longing to see you after that, so when I met you as an applicant waitress at the bar, I really wanted to tell you who I am but boss told me you didn’t know me so I tried to be a brother figure to you as much as I can. I hope you’re not angry with me, with boss Gary, and especially your mom. We only wanted to protect you.”
Jean could feel his sincerity, and he could see his aura: he is being truthful. She smiled.
“Why would I get angry with the people who raised me? I should be thankful that you looked after me, because all this time, I thought my mother doesn’t love me. Now I understand.”
“Would you like to see them?” Freeman asked.
“Yes, please.”
“Then let’s go to HQ.” Freeman said and they all went out of the conference room.
As soon as they stepped out of the room, they saw Leinth on the sofa and when he saw Jean, he immediately stood up and rushed to her but Winston pulled her and put her behind him.
“Jean…” Leinth called.
“It’s okay Winston, we’re friends.” Jean smiled at him and went to hug Leinth.
He was startled but he smiled and hugged her back.
“I’m glad you’re okay, love.” He whispered.
“I’m glad that I’m back here again.” She said. She pulled away. “We’ll just go to the AEGIS HQ. If they will look for me, just tell them I am with Chief Freeman.” she said.
“We’ll be waiting for you.” Leinth said.
They left.
*****
When they arrived at the headquarters, they immediately went to the AEGIS Infirmary. Gary and Marina were both awake and they were talking. Freeman and Cain entered the room. Winston and Jean both stayed outside.
“How are you feeling, Agents?” Freeman asked.
“We’re feeling a lot better now, sir. Maybe I could go and look for my daughter? I won’t be able to stay much longer here knowing she’s out there and I don’t know her whereabouts---“
“Mom!” Jean rushed to her and hugged her tight.
“Oh, Jean!” Marina hugged her back and kissed her head and cheeks. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to protect you enough.” Her tears flowing on her cheeks.
“No, you have protected me long enough, mom. I know all your sacrifices now. Thank you for raising me and taking good care of me.” She said, not letting go of the hug she had been longing for from her mother. When she was satisfied, she finally let go and saw her mom’s tears. She wiped them off.
“How are you coping up? Are you hurt somewhere?” her mom asked.
“I’m okay now, mom. Turns out, I have healing abilities, too.” She said proudly.
“I’m glad you’re okay.” She said.
“How about you? Are you being stubborn? They told you to rest and heal. I want to heal you myself but I know you’re going to MIA on me again once you’re all healed up. So I will let you heal normally here so I could visit you every day.”
“You silly girl.” Her mom laughed. She laughed a bit, too.
“I will just check on boss Gary, mom.” She said and went to the other bed.
“You said that as if I am on the other room.” He joked.
“Well, you’re on the other bed… Thank you, boss.” She said and hugged him. He hugged her back.
“You’re welcome. I don’t know why you’re thanking me, though.” He said again. She pulled away.
“I know what you and my mom had been through all this years, covering up and protecting me from the GUILD. Winston told me about it. And I’m sorry that you have gone through those torturing because of me.”
“It’s rather me than you getting those beatings. They are beasts.” He said exaggeratedly.
She smiled at his jokes.
“You still have some broken bones on your ribcage.” She said.
“How do you know?” he asked.
“I can see it.” She said and she put her hand on his left side. They saw yellowish lights emitting from her hands.
“What are you doing to my patient? Seriously, Chief?” a voice came from behind them.
“Nightingale! Jean’s trying to heal Gary so we didn’t interrupt.” Freeman answered.
Jean turned to look at her and when their eyes met…
“Amora…” the lady called Nightingale said and hugged her.
“W-what?” she was startled. All of them were startled.
“I have been looking all around for you. I know I would meet you here somewhere but Gods…” the lady pulled back and put her hands on Jean’s face. “Dear child, I am so happy to see you here.”
‘Child… The only one who calls me child is… Jean let me take over! That’s my mother!’ Amora excitedly said. Jean closed her eyes and when she opened it again, she hugged Nightingale. They all looked puzzled.
“My queen.” She said.
“Oh, Amora…” Nightingale said, crying.
“Hey, Nightingale, that’s my daughter.” Marina said.
“She was my daughter, too.” She answered.
“Okay… can someone explain what’s happening?” Freeman said.
Jean pulled away from Nightingale and she closed her eyes and Jean came back to her senses.
“I think I can explain.” Jean said.
“Please do.”
“When I was in the facility, Fienes injected his so-called nxs13 to me. He also said that all my suppressed memories will return. And then I fainted. I woke up because someone was standing in the middle of the room where I was confined. It was an apparition of Amora. We were talking in Dagrasean and so I realized I wasn’t awake because I can understand her. And she made me remember everything.” Jean explained.
“That doesn’t explain why you knew Dr. Cristina Grey.” Freeman said.
“I am the reincarnation of the sorceress of Bakir, the one who raised the saint Amora. I’m Karnilla.” Nightingale introduced herself.
“So you know about the prophecy?” Cain asked.
“Yes. But I am waiting for it to happen so that I could meet the saint I raised myself.” Nightingale said.
“But that doesn’t mean you can take my daughter away.” Marina said.
Jean looked at her mom and smiled.
“You’re my mom whatever happens. Dr. Grey here was Amora’s.” she said.
“Okay, that’s great to hear.” Her mom said.
“Alright, visiting time is over. I’m sure, Amora… I mean, Jean needs to rest as well.” Nightingale said.
“I’ll visit again tomorrow, mom.” Jean said as she hugged her mom and planted a soft kiss on her mother’s temple.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”
“Bye, boss.” she said and hugged the man.
“Have some rest, too, Jean.” Gary said. She nodded.
They all left the room.
“Agent Butler, could you send Jean back to the MARVELOUS compound?” Freeman ordered.
“Yes, sir. Jean let’s go.” Winston said.
“Thank you for taking care of my mother, Sir.” Jean said to Freeman.
“No worries.” He said.
