44. Visit
GENESIS
All the way to the hospital, she found it hard to sit still. Every five minutes or so, she would ask Dante if they were close already. And when Dante finally pulled into the parking lot of the hospital, she almost jumped out through the car's window. She had to calm herself down and opened the door before she got out.
She walked ahead of Dante and even spoke to the receptionist by herself about who they were here to see. She was aware that Dante must have been confused as hell, but that was something she was going to address later. At the moment, all she wanted was to see her best friend.
Immediately she walked through the doors of the ward, she felt a wave of happiness hit her. Her eyes brimmed with tears once her eyes met with Sara's. And she would have dived to hug her friend if that did not mean that she would have to explain to Dante and Scar Face why she was doing that.
Even Sara must have understood from her hesitation that she had not yet spilled the truth about her past to Dante, so she was also struggling to hide her tears.
Sara looked pale, and her lips were chapped. Genesis walked to her, reached out and stroked her arm.
“How do you feel?” She was still trying not to cry.
“I feel like shit.” Sara whispered and Genesis had to stifle her laughter. Her friend was still the same person she was before the coma. “I just want to leave this place.”
“Just a few more days, okay? I'm sure they just want to observe you a little bit more.” Genesis said to her. “Plus, you were shot in the chest and that's a delicate area.”
“Yeah, whatever.” Sara rolled her eyes and then she looked over Genesis's shoulder, at Scar Face. “I want to be alone with this lady now. You men are boring as hell.”
Scar Face laughed heartily and it echoed in the room, then he said, “Alright.” He pulled Dante out with him as he left. And before the door was even completely shut, Sara grabbed my hand.
“Girl!” She whisper-yelled, and then she groaned in pain as she clutched her chest.
“Take it easy, please.” Genesis helped her adjust the pillow beneath her head so that she was laying down as comfortably as possible.
“You know those people that say that there is a thin line between life and death?” Sara asked out of nowhere and Genesis nodded. “They're right. Where I was…” She closed her eyes with a frown. “I don't even know where that is, but I was floating, everywhere and nowhere at the same time. I felt light as a feather. One day, I would hear everything people say, and I would try to move all to no avail. Then the next day, I would be completely disconnected, trapped in what I saw as complete darkness. Then, out of nowhere, I would see a bright light drawing me into itself and just before I would get in, it would disappear. The whole experience was scary, Jenny. I never want to go through that ever again.”
“You won't.” Genesis reassured her friend, trying not to cry from the fear in Sara's eyes. This was really all her fault. “I'm sorry I got you into this. I should never have asked you for—”
“Say that again and I'll twist your nose.” Sara did not let Genesis finish. “So you're saying you should have never told me, huh? That you should have suffered this alone? Is that what you're saying?”
“Well, look where telling you has gotten you.” Genesis sniffed as tears brimmed her eyes again. Her chest felt tight but she still forced herself to speak. “I almost lost you, Sara…”
“Yeah, but you didn't. I'm alive, aren't I?” Sara gripped Genesis hand tighter. “I would do this a million more times if I had to. You'd do the same for me, I know that. We've come a long way together, Jenny. This was just a small sacrifice.”
Genesis wiped the tear that had escaped her eye and placed a soft peck on her friend's hand. “Thank you so much.”
Sara smiled toothily at her. “Any time.” Then her eyes scanned Genesis's face. “You're glowing more than usual.”
Genesis blushed and looked away from her friend as she knew where Sara was going with that statement. Sara squeezed her hand and she looked back at her to see that she was wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
Then Sara gasped and covered her mouth dramatically. “You guys have—” She hesitated for a moment. “You guys have fucked!?”
“No!” Genesis swatted her friend's arm playfully, but she could not hide the redness that came out on her cheeks. Her whole face and neck felt hot. “We've only… kissed.”
“Oh my gosh!” Sara's eyes went wide. “What happened to your relationship only being a contract? When did this happen? And why didn't you tell me!?”
Genesis eyed Sara. “Did you not just wake up from a coma?”
“Right, right.” Sara sighed. “We have a lot to catch up on.”
“A lot.” Genesis nodded as she exhaled.
“So tell me how the kiss happened.” Sara was all giddy again and Genesis rolled her eyes. “You better explain in detail.”
“Well, it was a hot day.” Genesis started. “So I decided to go in the pool, and I met him there. One thing led to another and we ended up kissing.”
Sara frowned at Genesis's summary but she did not push it as she was well aware that that was all she was going to get out of Genesis. “So, are you guys going to take things further?”
“Yes.” Genesis nodded, trying not to blush again. “But we're taking things slow for now.”
“Awww.” Sara wiped imaginary tears from her eyes. “Remember, I'll be your chief bride's maid.”
“Of course.” Genesis laughed. “You and Scar Face? What's going on between you two?”
“Scar Face?” Sara looked confused. “Who is that?”
“The one that came to rescue you. The one with the sc—”
“Oh!” Sara chuckled. “You mean Matthew? That's his name, not Scar Face.”
“I'm sorry, Dante likes to call him that.” Genesis smiled. “So what's going on between you two?” Genesis would be lying if she said she had never noticed the kind of concern that the man always had for her friend. And the way he looked at her? It was obvious that Sara had his heart.
“Well…” Sara started. “We've been hooking up for a while. It started as a no string attached type of thing, then we started having feelings for each other. But Jenny, I'm scared to commit. He's an amazing man but men like him are unpredictable, I do not want anything to take me by surprise and set me back. The other day he asked that I go live with him once I'm discharged, and I am yet to give him an answer. I want to take this step with him but I'm scared.”
“Oh Sara…” Genesis smiled softly. “From the way I've heard him speak of you, look at you, I don't think he'll do anything to hurt you. Matter of fact, he could burn down the world just for you. I mean, look how he risked his life to come get you out of Rodriguez's hostage. You can still take your time to think, I'm only telling you what I have observed.”
“Thank you…” Sara smiled and sighed.
Just then, ScarFace— Matthew burst through the doors of the ward with Dante right behind him. “Well, I think we have given you ladies enough time to yourselves. I do not want the doctor to come in here and scold me about not letting her have enough rest.”
“Oh, that's alright.” Genesis got on her feet. “We're even done.”
“Great.” Matthew grinned at her. “Dante was just telling me about the wonders you have performed with his son. I would love it if you could come help me Sara once she's out of here, like once or twice a week?”
“I would be happy to do that.” Genesis responded. And she was happy indeed. It was the perfect excuse to see her friend once she was out of here.
“Thank you.” Matthew nodded curtly. “We'll make the arrangements once the time comes.”
Genesis took Dante's hand that he had extended to her and they walked out of the ward together. She could almost not contain her happiness. Things were really falling into place.
“For someone you don't know, you seem really happy for her.” Dante said and she looked at him.
“I'm just really happy that everything has calmed down in our lives.” She replied. And she was not lying this time.
He opened the passenger’s door for her and she got in with a huge smile, one that did not drop even when they had gotten home. She felt lighter than ever at that moment. She had a feeling that this was the beginning of the best times of her life.Download Novelah App
