45. Suspicion

DANTE
He had been really suspicious of Genesis the last few days. Not for something serious, no. It was about that lady, Sara. The kind of closeness they had after barely meeting each other seemed unnatural. Genesis always talked about Sara a lot now, they had even taken to texting each other.
It bugged his mind so much that he thought it wise to discuss it with Luke.
“It's a woman thing. They bond over the littlest things.” That was all Luke said.
Dante nodded but he still was not convinced. He took his friend's words for it and chose not to think too much of it. That was until he overheard Genesis on the phone speaking with Sara.
“Do you remember when that local boy band was trying so desperately to be the it boys on campus?” Genesis had asked.
He frowned. If they really had just met, how did they share a memory that went all the way back to college?
He chose to remain there and listen more but it was not long after that that Genesis had ended the call, saying that she needed to focus on cooking.
He walked in casually, with his hands in his pocket and she smiled at him when she noticed him.
“You were speaking with Sara?” He began his interrogation.
“Yes.” She nodded with her smile still on as she stirred the onions she was caramelizing.
“You guys attended the same college?”
“Yes, we did!” She beamed at him.
“So you guys have known each other since then?”
“Y—” She caught herself and regained her composure. From the look on her face, he knew that she was cooking up a befitting response in her head. “No. We only just realized that as we've been talking.”
“I see.” He walked behind her to fetch himself some water. As he passed, he saw her go stiff.
He really wished he did not have to feel this way about her. He did not want to feel like she was lying to him. It only made him curious as to what kind of connection she had with Sara that would make her lie to him.
Or maybe she was actually being truthful and he was making a mountain out of a molehill? But his guts said otherwise. From her body language and the way her eyes moved around the kitchen, he knew that something was up. She was definitely keeping something from him, and she was obviously scared of him finding out.
He chose to give her her space for now as he announced, “I'm going for a walk. I'll be back before dinner.”
“Alright.” She nodded stiffly.
It was Luke's number that he dialed immediately as he exited the kitchen.

Dante took his time to explain to Luke what he had heard why he thought it was suspicious. But Luke, in his usual carefree nature, insisted that it was still nothing to fuss about and that both women were just excited about the new friendship that they had just found.
And Dante tried, he really tried to see things as Luke saw them but he could not. He still had the feeling that something was not clear about the bond that Genesis shared with Sara. She was an open book and it was easy to tell that she was unsettled from the way that she acted.
“I don't think there's anything to worry about.” Luke said over the phone. “Why would she possibly lie about knowing the woman even if she actually did? It just doesn't make sense that she would do that, so I think you should calm down.”
“That's what I'm trying to figure out, Luke.” Dante was beginning to feel frustrated. “Something is wrong, I just know it. But, right now, my brain cannot come up with possible reasons as to why she would lie about that.”
“See, I think you should try to get your mind off this thing. There's really nothing to it.” Luke advised.
“Alright.” Dante nodded. He may have indeed been thinking too much of it. “Thank you.”
“It's okay.”
And with that, he dropped the call and took his seat on a nearby bench. He tried to convince himself that if it were really important then Genesis would have said something to him about it. But his nerves were still not relaxing and he still had that strange feeling in his guts.
He did his best to suppress it and started heading home for dinner when he saw that it was almost six o'clock.
*******
Dinner was awkward. It was as if Genesis was already aware that he was beginning to suspect her. She spoke very little, not how chatty she usually was when she was around Elon. She ate very slowly and took her time to think of her responses, like she was scared that she was going to say something she was not supposed to.
“Did you guys have an argument?” Elon asked and they both turned to look at him. He only shrugged and she reached out for a piece of bread. “You both are being very awkward right now and I am not comfortable with that at all.”
“I'm sorry we're making you uncomfortable.” Dante apologized. “And no, we did not have an argument.”
“Then why are you guys acting weird?” Elon looked at his father with a frown. “Dinner is usually lively even though it's just the three of us. But today, it’s awkward. Why?”
“We're just tired, El.” Genesis spoke up. “We're a little bit low on energy.”
“Hmm.” Elon hummed and went back to eating his food. They both knew that he did not buy that excuse but they were also glad that he did not push it.
They stayed in silence like that until they were done with dinner and Elon was ready to retire to his room. While Genesis went with Elon to tuck him in bed, Dante waited in front of her door. He needed to talk to her and clear this awkwardness that had come between them.
A few minutes passed before he sighted her coming and she paused immediately she saw him standing in front of her room’s door.
He watched her swallow before she started taking slow steps towards him. “Do you need something?” She asked carefully.
“No, I don't.” He shook his head. “I just need to know if I said something to upset you.” He chose to be careful with his words. Perhaps, when he had asked about her and Sara knowing each other since their college days, his tone was a little bit harsh? He was not sure that that was the case, but he still had to ask.
“No…” She exhaled and looked down at her fingers.
“Then why are you being withdrawn?” He could not help the frown that appeared on his face.
“Nothing, really.” She looked at him. “I just need to rest, I guess.”
“Okay…” He was not satisfied with her response but he was not one to pry in this kind of situation. “I should leave you be then. We'll talk tomorrow?”
She nodded and gave him a small smile. They shared a hug and he gave her a soft peck on her forehead before he headed to his room. Even as he had his shower and got ready to sleep, he was still trying to get rid of that feeling in his guts. He trusted Genesis and he needed to get a grip of himself. That night, he fell asleep holding on to that trust that he had for her.
