Chapter 44 : Shadow Mission - Helper
As they step through they found themselves in different regions, Team Leo and Levi landed on polar regions on separate planets while Nicholas and Bruce found themselves in a metropolitan area.
__________Team Levi______________
It was a snowy terrain and not a single shelter in sight, there were a few mountains around which Brandon assumed they would be heading for to find some shelter.
"First thing is finding shelter right ?" Brandon asked.
"Correct, let's find an uninhabited cave" Levi replied.
There made their way to the closest mountain, it was deep and smelt like decomposing bones.
"Nope, definitely not, do you know why?" Levi asked.
"Smells like a wild breast's leftover in here" Brandon replied.
"Good I will skip the survival tutorial for beginners then" Levi said.
They made their way to the next cave which wasn't deep but seemed to not have been used by any beast, they set up camp there.
"Stay here I will be right back, I will be back in ten minutes" Levi said.
Brandon did as he was told, he sat at the mouth of the cave using his core eyes to scan the area for beasts and anything suspicious, for the next five minutes, he could only see Ice bears and polar lions.
Looking towards the distance he could see some movements, zooming in, he saw a group of people traveling through the snow, they were all covered up from head to toe so he couldn't see their faces.
A few minutes later, Levi returned to the cave covered in blood and snow.
"Did you go on a butcher spree or you happened to walk through a field in the middle of a paint ball war?" Brandon asked.
"Ran into some trouble, I handled it" Levi replied.
"Just wild breasts though" he added.
"So what sightings are we investigating?" Brandon asked..
"Elves, they usually travel in groups, but this terrain, they will probably be covered up making them hard to spot" Levi replied.
"Is this planet completely completely snowy?" Brandon asked.
"No, the other parts should be filled with ice caps and cold water bodies" Levi replied.
"They might try finding a Less snowy region to lay base, somewhere secluded but with favourable weather" Brandon said.
"Good initiative, it would take about half a day to get out of this snowy region" Levi said.
"Well then let's get moving" Brandon said.
"Right, pack up" Levi said.
A few minutes later, they were traveling across the snow trying to get out of the endless falling snow.
Brandon was secretly leading Levi in the direction he had seen the earlier group go, if his guess was correct the only other people who would walk through this weather would be the elves.
"So what's your plan for the future?" Levi asked.
"The future?" Brandon asked back.
"I mean after military academy, after you have served your time, will you join a faction? continue in the military? or just retire?" Levi clarified..
"I don't really know but, I'm sure of one thing, there's no room for retirement in my future" Brandon replied.
"Cool, you remind me of someone, I knew" Levi said.
"Really, who?" Brandon asked.
"His name was Tade, we never pronounced the name right but, he never got mad, I guess wisdom isn't scarce among Africans" Levi sighed.
"What happened to him?" Brandon asked, he noticed a slight tone of dejection in Levi's voice.
"He died during our last mission as 2nd years" Levi replied.
"He sacrificed himself for you" Brandon said.
"How did you come to that conclusion?" Levi asked.
"Well, the slight tone of dejection in your voice was my first clue but then the way you said he died, I felt there was a connection" Brandon replied.
"You are smart, he would have loved you, it was my fault, we had all the information, weapons, everything needed for the mission but i was in so much hurry to round up our 2nd year that I didn't let them scout the area around our target" Levi explained.
"You were ambushed?" Brandon asked.
"Not exactly, we were supposed to wipe out a vampire camp that was tailing a military convoy passing through dangerous territory, we didn't know they were other enemies in the areas. The vampires had camped out in a valley not too far from where the convoy camped for the night" Levi continued.
"You don't have to tell me this, it's obvious you are still hurting over it" Brandon said with concern.
"I know, It's just that your remind me so much of him" Levi said, his voice now cracking.
"Woah, Senior Levi, do-" Brandon was interrupted when Levi pulled him to the side of a tree, he slammed it with his fist causing them to be covered in snow.
A few minutes later, two individuals arrived at where they were, pulling down the clothes covering their faces, Brandon first made out the pointy ears and near pale skin, Levi had his arm on his weapon already.
"Are you sure you felt someone here Valeria?" The first asked.
"Yes, Taurus, there was someone following us" The person named Valeria replied.
"Well then, can you still sense them?" Taurus asked.
"I'm trying but I can't sense them anymore, it'sike they vanished" Valeria replied.
"We don't have time to waste, let's move" Taurus said before they disappeared.
They couldn't find them because Brandon had drawn a concealing Rune to mask their auras. Once it seemed safe to move, they got out of the snowy camouflage.
"That was close, we have to be careful" Levi said.
They quietly walked in the direction the two elves went, Brandon made sure to keep the rune active as they moved, they arrived at the a hill where they crouched in case the enemy turned back.
When they got to the too they could see the group of individuals being joined by the two elves , they were boarding a makeshift boat to cross a river.
"I wonder what they are up to" Brandon said.
"Me too but, I'm sure it's nothing good" Levi replied.
"Well let's be sure before we act" Brandon said.
They watched the group sail across the river till they were out of sight before they came down the hill to the mouth of the river.
"How do you suggest we cross?" Brandon asked.
"Well, we can't swim it, the water is too cold and using our ability to stay warm would create steam that would give away our location, we can't fly over, they will spot us before we even get across" Levi said.
Brandon looked around for any items they could use to cross. On the floor around were pieces of wood, rope and a rusty knife.
'Well the wood won't be enough to build a raft so these are useless" Brandon noted.
"But we can create makeshift surf boards" Brandon said.
"Really, what if they are still at the other end of the river when we get there?" Levi asked.
"Oh, well, I guess we can only do one other thing" Brandon said.
"Which is?" Levi asked.
"Walk around it and hope to find a bridge of some sort" Brandon replied.
Levi didn't oppose so they walked along the river side, going in the direction it flowed, as they got further, the river got more narrow, then they got to a point where there were rocks scattered across the river with the other side within their sights.
"Well, this will have to do" Brandon said.
"You aren't thinking of crossing on these stones right?" Levi asked.
"We can't let the elves get too far ahead of us, they might still be on the other side back where their boat must have docked, it's an easy set of jumps, we can use our ability as boost" Bradson explained.
"At least you know what you are doing, let's go" Levi said.
Getting to the other side, they quickly hid among some trees before swiftly moving to the supposed position of the elves, since there wasn't an endless array of falling snow, they had limited camouflage.
They got to the elves location, they had set up camp at the base of a hill close to the edge of the river.
"Looks like your suggestion was spot on" Levi said.
"They look like runaways" Brandon said.
"Huh" Levi said confused.
"Look at them, they are covered in bruises, on edge and with limited supplys, they barely have a tent to sleep in, that that thing is one storm away from becoming a discarded ship's sail" Brandon said.
"Wow, you have keen observation skills" Levi said.
"Thanks, let's set our camp a bit further away" Brandon said.
They set up their camp on the other side of the hill behind some trees and continued watching the elves till night fall, when there seemed to be no activity.
"We should take turns keeping watch, get some sleep, I will wake you in four hours" Levi said.
"Okay" Brandon replied.
As Levi kept on watching the elves, he couldn't help but remember what Brandon had said before 'Well let's be sure before we act'.
"Don't tell me he feels sorry for them" Levi mumbled.
While asleep Brandon had spread his senses across a wide range so they wouldn't be ambushed. His brows knotted as he felt several unfamiliar auras around them on both sides of the river.
Levi noticed the river suddenly froze over at the same time, Brandon ran up to him.
"We are surrounded" Brandon said.
"I thought I told you to sleep, huh we have to find a way out" Levi said.
Brandon could still sense the intruders, the ones behind them suddenly halted but those coming from across the river kept moving forward.
Soon they could see a group of creatures Brandon recognized from his last planetary visit.
"Deathwargs" Brandon said.
"Death what?" Levi asked.
"Deathwargs, the elves were being tracked, that means they are indeed runaways" Brandon replied.
Close behind the deathwargs was a small army of what appeared to be humans.
"I thought we were the only ones sent here" Brandon said.
"We are, those aren't humans" Levi replied.
Zooming in, Brandon could see their attire, it bore the emblem of a ram skull with a sword behind it and a snake curled around it.
The elves were awakened by the sound of the approaching intruders, they took out their weapons and stood around in a circle.
"They know they are surrounded" Brandon stated.
"This is certainly troublesome, any suggestions would be appreciated" Levi said.
"Well, we could take our chances with the enemies coming from behind us" Brandon suggested.
"We could but if thier numbers are the same with these guys, we would be toast" Levi replied.
"Then we fight alongside the elves, there's strength in numbers" Brandon said.
While Levi was contemplating their next course of action, the elves had engaged the intruders in battle, they were holding up well at first but as their injuries piled up, their movements became sluggish, one of them who looked as young as Brandon was hit badly and bleeding on the ground, one of the females around his age stood in front of him to defend him as two Deathwargs lunged at them ready to take a big bite out of the elf girl, this triggered a memory which Brandon dreaded.
The next thing Levi knew, he felt like a rocket took of right next to him as Brandon shot up into the sky in a burst of flames. The elves below had no idea of the meteor coming down on them, a vampire lunged at the elf girl protecting her injured friend, the elf girl managed to ward off the deathwargs but the vampire's speed was far beyond hers, she was sent flying before crashing into the camp behind them, the elf boy seeing a hope was lost closed his eyes in defeat but the next thing he felt was an intense amount of heat accompanied by a bird cry the elves found particularly intriguing.
The vampires, demons and deathwargs attacking were surprised by the entrance of an unknown individual who had just scorched one of them to death.
"That kid will be the end of me" Levi sighed as he snuck down the hill to join the fight.
Meanwhile, Brandon looked at the vampire he had just killed, what was left of it turned to ashes, snapping back to his senses, he quickly went after the other intruders, he decided to go all out before Levi arrived and by the time Levi got there, half the army had been wiped out and the rest were quickly taken care of as Levi joined in.
Surprisingly, the army in the hill behind them retreated rather than joining the battle. Once the the battle was over, Brandon walked over to the injured elf, he had multiple bite marks in his arms, legs and waist.
"The amount of paralytic venom you alone have probably taken in would probably be enough to keep all of you down for hours" Brandon said.
On looking up, he found Levi having a stare off with the remaining elves, all gripping their weapons tightly.
"Woah, the fight is over, why the tension?" Brandon asked.
"Let's get going, you wanted to help them and we have" Levi replied not taking his eyes off the elves.
"Ian, is there anyway I can help him?" Brandon asked.
"You can purge out the soul energy strengthening the venom so his immune system can take care of the rest" Ian replied.
"It's not the solution I was expecting but it's still something, if I leave him like this, he will be paralyzed for days" Brandon sighed.
He placed his hand on the elf and channeled his soul energy into it, he could feel the energy of the venom fighting against his but the constant supply and Brandons currently evolution was more than enough for Brandon's soul energy to prevail.
"Am sure you guys can handle his wounds" Brandon said.
He walked up to Levi, sprouting his wings, he took one more look at the elf before grabbing Levi and flying off.
"Get the medicine, someone help Biola nveva out of the rubble, what did that human do to you?" The leader asked the boy on the ground.
"He helped me, I don't think he's completely human" The elf boy replied before passing out.
Brandon could feel Levi frowning without looking at his face, when they finally landed a good distance away from the elves, Levi just walked ahead till they found a place to camp.Download Novelah App
