She eventually gave up. She turned off her laptop and laid down on her bed. She felt pathetic. She came to South Korea to be able to move on. To complete herself again and be normal. Not for her to feel that something was missing in her life and that it was okay to just watch a Korean drama than to go on a date. Can I go back to the past when I walk away from Carter? Does it mean that I will go back to the woman who is not completely happy and seems to feel nothing because she has been swallowed up by the past? She suddenly got up from her bed when she heard a commotion coming from downstairs. She could hear cluttering of things and someone shouting. Was there a fight going on? She rushed out of her room and went to the stairs. She was about to go down when she saw four men in black messing up the whole place. The chairs were upside down and one man was even holding a bat. The four guests she met earlier were all shuddering in fear as they huddled in a corner. "Jebal geuman haera," Tita Selina said, crying. The old lady didn’t know what to do to stop the mean from tearing the place down. “Urine donbol myondwae! Urieged oneuljwo!” one of the men said angrily. What do these men want? They look like they were looking for something. Why are they messing around? Cheska held her breath. "Aunt Selina!" She was about to rush to the old lady when someone pulled her back. She was startled and was about to fight back when she saw that it was Eun Young who stopped her. The teenager motioned her to keep quiet and stay hiding behind the wall. "Unnie, we need to stay here. Park Gung and his men might see you and hurt you too.” Cheska slumped down on the floor. Her knees were shaking especially when she heard something hit the wall. "What the hell do they want?” “Money. To pay off Appa’s debt to them,” Eun Young replied. “When Appa got promoted in the realty company he worked for, he also became addicted to gambling, women, and alcohol. He thought he had a lot of money. He was no longer satisfied with the casino. He also entered illegal gambling. Park Gung owned that illegal gambling my father went to and that guy deliberately buried appa in debt.” "You didn't know about it?" “We only found out when Appa left with another woman. Park Gung and his men went to our house and demanded that we pay them five hundred thousand won per week. When we couldn’t pay, they would make trouble and threaten to hurt us. But it wasn’t enough because we had no guests coming here. The review of our guesthouse was not good because of the gangsters. So Mama took some tailoring jobs and Kuya Oppa took up English tutoring jobs because our money was not enough. I took every tutoring job there is just to earn more money.” "Is your brother not back yet?" “I already called him. He said he was on his way. I wish he is here. He can make things right. It was always him who fixes our troubles around here.” She hugged Eun Young. The young girl was trembling in fear and trying so hard not to cry. Cheska thought scenes like these, with all the bad guys and gangsters, only happen in Korean dramas and movies. She didn’t expect she would experience it as well. In her twenty-five years in this world, she never experienced this kind of violence. She was also scared but she needed to be brave for Eun Young. She didn’t know what else those men could do. Carter finally arrived. His eyes widened as he looked around. “I have the money. Please accept. Juseyo reulpyo hamnida.” He pulled out his wallet and handed the money with his head down. Park Gung took the money harshly and counted it. “Igo seunchung bunha jianta. Animyo nniga naijibeul taeugo simni.” Eun Young held her breath. "They said they would burn down our house because Kuya didn't pay enough." "Are they really going to do that?" Cheska asked. Eun Young swallowed. “They will do anything for money. They have no soul.” The girl hugged Cheska. “I am scared. This place is all we have. Where else would we be if we’re to lose everything? W-what if they kill us?” Cheska felt herself getting numb in fear at the thought of their fate in that house. She grew up in a quiet family. She was not used to violence around her. The only experience she had with gangsters’ brutalities was through movies, fictional books, and tv dramas. The hero she was hoping for right now was in danger as well. If she don’t do anything, who would even come to their rescue? "Maybe we should call the police," she said, seeing a ray of hope finally. "Let them throw those gangsters in jail." Eun Young looked at her through teary eyes. “No one can fight them. They are strong. They have police connections... and there was no way we could fight them back.” Just like in the Philippines. Corrupt ones are still rampant. Evil ones use violence for money. The leader grabbed the collar of Carter's jacket and pushed him to the wall. "Are you kidding me?" He raised his fist to punch the young man. "Stop!" Cheska shouted and came out of hiding. "Don't hurt him."
