Chapter 18

Dr. Harrison POV
In the coming days and weeks, I balanced my responsibilities at the hospital with being present for my father's recovery. It was an arduous journey, one that tested my resilience and challenged me emotionally, but I drew strength from the love and support of both my medical colleagues and my family.
I can't let this circumstance affect my work.
I'm so thankful that Sadie stayed with me.
Today, my focus was on Gab, one of my long-time patients suffering from heart failure.
I reviewed Gab's medical records, studying every detail meticulously. Over the years, I had developed a deep connection with Gab, not just as a doctor but as a friend. I had witnessed their ups and downs, their moments of strength and vulnerability. Each time they faced a setback, it weighed heavily on my heart. I knew I had to give my best to ensure they received the care they needed.
I stepped into Gab's room, where they lay peacefully in the hospital bed, looking tired but with a faint smile on their face as they saw me enter. We exchanged greetings, and I took a moment to sit down beside them, creating an atmosphere of comfort and trust.
"How are you feeling today, Gab?" I asked, knowing that their response would provide valuable insight into their condition.
They sighed softly, "It's been a tough few days, Dr. Harrison. My chest feels heavy, and I've been having trouble catching my breath."
I nodded, listening attentively to their description of the symptoms. I knew that heart failure was a relentless condition that demanded constant monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans. I reassured Gab that we were here for them and that together, we would tackle this challenge head-on.
I conducted a thorough examination, monitoring their vitals and reviewing the latest test results. With a heavy heart, I knew that we needed to make some adjustments to Gab's treatment. Their health was my responsibility, and I was determined to do everything in my power to help them find relief.
Throughout the day, I made it a point to visit Gab regularly, checking in on their progress, discussing their concerns, and offering support. I knew how crucial it was for patients to feel cared for, and I wanted them to know they were not alone in this battle.
As the day wore on, I found myself reflecting on the weight that came with being a doctor. It wasn't just about diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications; it was about forming a genuine connection with each patient, understanding their fears and hopes, and doing everything possible to improve their quality of life.
But even amidst the challenging moments, there were rays of hope. I recalled the times when Gab had shown remarkable resilience, their determination to fight against all odds, and the joy that filled the room whenever they made progress.
After checking on him i told him that i'll be back later to check on him again.
It was lunch time, so i stopped near the nurse station to looked for Sadie.
"Hey, Abby?" i called her friend.
"yes doc?" she said
"is Sadie in there?" i asked
"uhm, the last time i saw her is on the room 225? maybe she's still checking her patient" she said
"okay, thank you" i said
"no problem doc, i'll go now, i still need to check my next patient" she said and left
When i was about to leave the nurse station i saw Sadie walking towards this way.
"Sadie" i called her name, she was busy checking her folder
"oh, doc!" she smiles at me
"you've been working hard this past few days, it's already lunch time" i reminded her
"uhm yeah right, i just finish my last patient this morning, are you going to have your lunch?" she asked
"yeah, do you want to come with me?" i asked
"of course" she smiles
"hi guys, are you going for a lunch?" i looked at the doctor who is approaching us, It's Veronica.
"yes" i answered her question
"mind if i join you?" she asked, so i looked at the Sadie first, she nods at me.
"alright" i said
As we made our way to the hospital cafeteria, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. It had been years since I last had lunch with Sadie.
As we settled into our seats, Veronica, Sadie, and I engaged in casual conversation. Veronica, being the outgoing and friendly person she was, effortlessly joined in, making the atmosphere lighthearted and relaxed. We shared stories of our work, reminiscing about old memories, and laughing at the funny incidents that had occurred during our time at the hospital.
As we talked, I noticed how effortlessly Sadie fit into the conversation. She was as charming and delightful as ever, and her presence brought a sense of warmth to our lunchtime gathering. It was as if no time had passed, and we were back to being carefree friends again.
As we savored our meals, I couldn't help but steal glances at Sadie, marveling at how life had brought us together again. It was surreal, sitting here with her and Veronica, two people who had significantly impacted my life in different ways.
Throughout lunch, I couldn't shake the feeling that this reunion was more than just a coincidence. It felt like the universe had conspired to bring us back together, to remind us of the bond we once shared and the potential for a renewed friendship.
After we finished eating, Veronica excused herself, saying she had to attend to some urgent matters. As she left, Sadie and I found ourselves alone at the table. It was the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into each other's lives, to fill in the gaps that years of separation had created.
"So, how have you been, Sadie?" I asked, trying to contain my excitement.
She leaned back in her chair, her eyes reflecting a mixture of emotions. "It's been a journey, Harrison. Life took unexpected turns, but I'm trying to make the best of it."
I nodded, understanding that life had a way of surprising us with its twists and turns. "I'm glad, i'm back again" I said sincerely. "i missed teasing my best friend"
A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "whatever"
"how about you? are you feeling better?" she asked
"i'm feeling way better now, thank you" i said
"no need to thank me, i'm glad your okay now" she said
We continued talking, catching up on the events that had shaped our lives since we last saw each other. We shared our joys and struggles, our triumphs, and our heartaches. It was a cathartic experience, one that brought us closer together.
As our lunchtime came to an end, we both go back to our work.
Late into the evening, I reviewed Gab's condition once more. We had made some adjustments to their treatment plan, and I hoped it would make a positive difference. I approached their room with a mix of anticipation and apprehension.
As I entered, Gab looked up at me, their eyes searching for any signs of improvement. I couldn't help but offer a reassuring smile. "We've made some changes, Gab, and I'm optimistic that they will help alleviate some of the discomfort you've been experiencing."
Their face lit up with gratitude, and I felt a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing that, as a doctor, I had the power to make a positive impact on someone's life.
As the night settled in, I continued my rounds, attending to other patients while keeping Gab in my thoughts. Being a doctor was not just a profession for me; it was a calling to serve, to heal, and to be there for my patients in their most vulnerable moments.
And so, with unwavering dedication, I pressed on, determined to help Gab and all my patients, one step at a time, as we journeyed together toward recovery and hope..
