Chapter 34

I woke up the next day with Collin and Merikh cleaning up, then the door started rattling. Merikh took his staff, and Collin pointed a gun at it. Azriel suddenly opened the door, “oh, sorry,” he said when he saw his brother and Collin put down their weapons. I sat up from the couch and stretched. I turned around to see the three of them staring at me, “what?”
“Want me to get that?” Merikh asked playfully. I stared at them confused, then Collin whistled while pointing at my shirt. I looked down and saw that my white shirt is revealing my braless boobs, and my bra hanging over the couch. I immediately covered my chest with my arms, taking my bra with me to the bathroom. Then I heard a loud smack and Merikh yelled, “dude what the hell?!”
I got out of the bathroom and Collin handed me my red and gray plaid button-down shirt, “change your shirt,” he suggested. I took the shirt from him and went back inside the bathroom to change. When I got out again, I was in the middle of buttoning my shirt. I looked up and saw Merikh looking at me from my pants to my face, are you doing this on purpose? he asked in my head.
I looked at him and shrugged my shoulders. He just smiled and turned his back as I continued buttoning my shirt. I didn’t know Azriel walked behind me, “you really shouldn’t get your hopes up with Merikh.”
“You scared me!” I said as I smacked his arm.
“Sorry,” he laughed a little, “but seriously though, if you’re gonna choose one of them to be your boyfriend, don’t go for my brother. He’s an asshole when he’s in a relationship. But pathetic when he gets his heartbroken,” he bit on his KitKat before leaving me standing there.
“Okay, so,” Azriel said in a loud voice, “I got intel on your dad and he’s in Reno Beach, the one near Toledo. But he’s not alone. Beleth is with him and he has a legion of demons at his disposal. I don’t know what they’re planning but I am assuming that it’s probably something big.”
I walked towards them in the kitchen and leaned on the archway, Collin handed me a cup of coffee before sitting on a good chair he found. “So, what’s the plan?” Collin asked before sipping on his coffee. Before Azriel could answer, a flap of wings was heard then followed by some footsteps, “you’re squatting here?” Raphael asked as he entered the kitchen.
“Hello to you, too, brother,” Merikh said.
“Guess Azriel has already started,” he commented, “as for the plan, well, we have nothing yet. The angels are being sent to every part of the world. The demons have scattered everywhere, thanks to Beleth. This isn’t just an apocalypse anymore. It’s war.”
We were talking about what we should do when we heard another flap of wings. “Hermesiel,” Azriel said as he stood up straighter, “what’re you doing here?”
“Well, if there’s anything I can do, to help is what it is,” she said while checking the dust on the doorway. Hermesiel looked exactly like what you think an angel would look like. She’s tall, wavy blonde hair, aquamarine eyes, rosy cheeks, and pink lips. She was wearing a dark blue pantsuit. “So, uh, what’s with the pantsuit?” asked Merikh. “My vessel’s a lawyer. She’s about to go home when I came to her and this is what she wears most of the time,” she explained, “so where’s the Nephilim?”
“Right here,” I raised my hand as I took another sip of my coffee, standing on the side.
“Oh good!” she exclaimed, “okay, I need you to go out to your daddy’s truck and under the weapon compartment, there are some books in there. Take the ones with angels with trumpets and bring it back here. Thank you.”
I just stood there waiting for anyone of them to protest but since no one said anything, I placed my coffee on the counter and went out.

After Mia went out to the truck, they all turned to Hermesiel, “what’s wrong with you?” Collin asked.
“What? Her father’s truck is loaded with sigils. Nothing and no one can touch the back compartment except for her and vamp here. Besides, if she’s going to be useful, might as well have her fetch some stuff. ,” she explained.
“She’s not here to fetch anything.”
“Meh. Don’t really care,” she said as she leans on the counter.
“Why are you really here?” Azriel finally asked.
She looked at her brothers and Collin, then she rolled her eyes. Placing her arms over her chest, “I’m here because of one thing and one thing only. Kill Beleth.”
“And you think you’re stronger than Beleth?”
“Yes, of course, I do. I don’t need your pathetic Nephilim to save the earth and win this war. She’s not strong enough to defeat the King of Hell and his legions of demons!”
She went on about how she wanted revenge for the death of her husband, the real Bartholomew. Mia silently entered the house when she heard them arguing. Merikh was having a screaming contest with Hermesiel when Raphael interrupted. “I am not going to repeat myself, Hermesiel!” Raphael roared, “you can get revenge however you want but we are not putting the  Nephilim in any form of danger!”
She was about to say something when all of them looked at the archway and saw her standing there, “uhm, here’s the, uh, the book,” Mia handed it over to Hermesiel, who grabbed it from my hand while glaring at her. She opened it and turned to a page, then slammed the book on the table, “there!” she said, pointing at something. Merikh read it, “no! Fuck that! No!” he yelled.
“Why not?! It’s not like she’s your girlfriend or anything. Besides, she’s not worth it. She can die and no one will care about it,” her snide comment made Merikh push her to the wall, his staff across her neck. “Don’t you fucking dare lay a finger on her. I will kill you myself if you do,” he warned. Hermesiel was quietly choking, Merikh pushed the staff on her neck a little too much, then Collin pulled Merikh back, glaring at Hermesiel as well. She placed a hand on her neck, gently massaging it.
They were too busy with Merikh and Hermesiel that they didn’t notice Mia walked over to the table and read what was written in the book: In order for the spell to work, a Nephilim should sacrifice oneself to effectively close the Gates of Hell indefinitely.
Mia looked up from the book and saw the angels and Collin looking at her. She placed the book back down to the table and sighed. “If that’s the only way to do it, then I’m willing to,” she said softly.
“Mia,” Collin whispered, then he turned to Raphael, “there’s another way, right? Tell me there’s another way!”
Raphael bowed down his head and shook it. Hermesiel smugly smiled, “well, if that is settled then I guess I will take it from here.”
She was about to walk closer when Azriel appeared right in front of Mia. “Move, Azriel. I don’t want to hurt you,” she commanded. Azriel stood his ground, “you might be forgetting one thing, Hermesiel. You may be older than me, but I rank higher than you. I am the Archangel of Destruction and Death. I can destroy you. I can take your grace and your wings. So, back the hell off,” he warned, his green eyes glowed and we heard thunder rolling outside. She looked at Merikh, Collin, and Raphael then back to Azriel, “fine,” she gritted her teeth and took a step back and disappeared.
***
Somewhere in an empty alley, Hermesiel met a man in a dark hoodie. She looked around to see if anyone was watching her or following her. When she saw no one, she walked closer to the unknown man, “I did everything I can, she can’t be taken. They’re protecting her too much, it’s disgusting!” she rolled her eyes. “Did you try to grab her away from them?”
Hermesiel shook her head. “Then you didn’t do everything you can,” he commented. He moved closer to Hermesiel, who was walking backward, moving away from this mysterious man. When she hits the wall, he grabbed her by the neck, “all you had to do was grab her and disappear. I gave you the easiest task, and you failed me.”
She hears the sound of a blade run through something. She felt her insides burning, realizing that it was her stomach that the blade went through. She let out an ear-piercing shrill, her eyes glowed a faint blue. Her grace disappeared and so did her life. When he pulled out the sword, she fell onto the ground, bleeding from her stomach.
The man wipes the sword’s blade to the sleeves of his hoodie and walked away.
