Chapter 28
The night was silent, but inside Castian’s house, the atmosphere was as tense as the air before a storm. The torches illuminated the small space, casting flickering shadows on the wooden walls. Castian sat at the table, arms crossed, with the Celestial Pearl resting in front of him, wrapped in a worn cloth. The subtle glow emanating from the artifact seemed to intensify the charged atmosphere. Cheng, his father, stood near the window, gazing into the darkness beyond the trees. His face reflected concern and a sadness Castian rarely saw. Mei, sitting at the other end of the table, remained tensely silent, glancing between them, as if she could sense the conflict about to erupt. "You don’t understand, Father," Castian began, breaking the silence with a voice heavy with frustration. "If we hand over the Pearl, Feng will have the power to destroy not just the village, but everything around it. This isn’t just about saving ourselves. It’s about protecting something greater." Cheng turned slowly, his serious gaze locking onto his son."And what if you’re wrong, Castian?" Cheng questioned, his voice grave and controlled. "What if this fight isn’t ours to take on? We’re a small village. Ordinary people. We’re not warriors or heroes." "But I am!" Castian retorted, standing abruptly. His chair scraped against the floor with a sharp sound. "I can fight! I won’t just stand by while Feng threatens us." Cheng walked over to him, his hands pressing firmly on the table as he leaned in close to face him."You’re young, Castian. You have strength, but you have no idea what it means to protect something. Protecting isn’t fighting to your last breath. It’s making hard choices, choices that often hurt, but keep the people you love alive." Castian felt his father’s words like a blow, but his determination didn’t waver. He looked at the Pearl, feeling the weight of his responsibility."I can’t just hand this over," he said, more to himself than to Cheng. "Feng won’t stop. He never will." Cheng shook his head, his expression hardening."Maybe you’re right. Maybe Feng is insatiable. But are you willing to sacrifice your mother? Your friends? Everyone here? All of this for something that might just be a legend?" The silence that followed was sharp. Mei finally broke her neutral stance, placing a hand on Cheng’s arm to calm him."Cheng, please." Her voice was low but firm. "He’s trying to do what he believes is right." "And what is ‘right’?" Cheng shot back, looking at his wife, then at his son. "Fighting an enemy we can’t defeat? Putting everyone’s lives at risk for an ideal that may never be achieved?" Castian felt the weight of his father’s words, but his mind was filled with images of the village in flames, of the people he knew being destroyed by forces he knew he could stop."What if we do what Feng wants?" Castian asked, his voice calmer but still intense. "Do you think he’ll just leave us alone after getting what he wants? He’ll come back, Father. He always will." Cheng looked deeply into his son’s eyes, seeing the conviction in them. He knew Castian believed what he was saying, but Cheng’s experience told him the world wasn’t that simple."You think being a hero means fighting, winning, protecting?" Cheng sighed and averted his gaze. "I’ve seen what happens to those who believe that. They don’t survive. And who’s left to mourn them? The people they tried to protect." For the first time, Castian felt a pang of doubt. He knew his father wasn’t just talking in theory but from something he had lived through."Father…" Castian began, his voice quieter now. "I know you want to protect the village, but so do I. The difference is, I won’t give up. I won’t hide and wait for someone to save us. I’ll do it." "And what if you fail, Castian?" Cheng’s voice trembled for the first time, letting slip the fear he had been hiding. "Have you thought about what happens if you fail?" Silence filled the space once again. Castian’s breathing was heavy, his mind spinning between his conviction and the doubt beginning to creep in. Mei finally stood, placing a hand on Cheng’s shoulder and then on Castian’s."You both want the same thing, but you’re stuck on different paths," she said, her voice filled with calm and compassion. "Cheng, you know Castian won’t give up, and Castian, you need to understand that your father only wants you to live." Castian’s eyes softened as he looked at his mother."I don’t want to lose anyone, Mother. Not you, not Father, not anyone in the village. But I can’t just hand this over and hope for the best." Cheng let out a deep sigh, running a hand over his face."I know I can’t change your mind, son. But I just hope you know what you’re getting into." "I do, Father," Castian replied, his voice firm again. "And that’s why I have to try." Cheng looked at him for a long moment before finally nodding, though the sadness in his eyes hadn’t disappeared."If this is your choice, Castian, then I can only ask one thing," Cheng said. "Remember, you’re not alone. Don’t try to carry all of this on your shoulders." Castian nodded, feeling the weight of his father’s words. He knew he was about to face something far greater than he could comprehend, but he also knew he couldn’t back down. As the night wore on, Cheng retired to rest, leaving Castian and Mei in the room. Mei approached her son, placing a hand on his face as she had when he was just a child."You have the heart of a warrior, my son," she said with a sad smile. "But don’t forget that even warriors need support." Castian held his mother’s hand for a moment, feeling a wave of comfort wash over him."Thank you, Mother. I promise I won’t let you… or Father down." She nodded and silently left to join Cheng, leaving Castian alone with his thoughts and the soft glow of the Celestial Pearl. As the torchlight dimmed, Castian stared at the artifact in his hands and whispered:"Whatever comes, I’ll be ready." But deep down, he knew the doubt was still there, whispering in the darkest corner of his mind. And that was what scared him more than any enemy he might face.
