Chapter 42

The morning began with the tranquil sound of the wind brushing against the trees and the soft creak of Kaelen's cabin door. Golden light filtered through the windows, illuminating Castian's face as he slowly awoke from a restless sleep. Though his body had rested, his mind remained uneasy, haunted by recent events and the responsibilities now weighing upon him.
At the small wooden table dominating the center of the cabin, Master Xun sat in complete silence, his eyes fixed on something Castian immediately recognized. The Celestial Pearl rested in the middle of the table, enveloped in a faint glow that seemed to pulse almost imperceptibly, like the beating of a distant heart.
Castian felt a tightness in his chest at the sight of it, so exposed and vulnerable under Xun's watchful gaze. He rose slowly, still feeling the weight of exhaustion in his muscles, and approached.
"You took it while I was sleeping?" Castian asked, his voice hoarse. His tone carried a mix of irritation and concern.
Xun did not avert his gaze from the Pearl. His long, knotted fingers hovered above it, but he refrained from touching it directly.
"It wasn’t difficult," he replied calmly. "You sleep soundly when you finally allow yourself to rest."
Castian crossed his arms, trying to hide his unease.
"You shouldn’t meddle with someone else’s things without permission."
Finally, Xun lifted his eyes to meet Castian’s, and what the young man saw in them left him silent. There was a gravity there he could not ignore, a weight that seemed greater than either of them.
"This is not just a thing, Castian," Xun said, his voice laden with seriousness. "It is a fragment of something much older and more powerful than you can imagine."
Kaelen, who had been outside organizing herbs and healing tools, entered the cabin upon hearing the somber tone in Xun’s voice. He closed the door behind him and stood beside Castian, observing the scene intently.
"What have you discovered, Master?" Kaelen asked, his gaze shifting from the Pearl to Xun.
Xun leaned forward slightly, as if he could hear the secrets the Pearl whispered.
"This Pearl is not merely a magical object," he began, speaking with deliberate slowness, as though each word needed to be carefully weighed before being spoken. "It is a receptacle of raw power, a fragment of something that was divided long ago. But the most troubling part is that it is not passive. It is alive, in a way. And it is calling to something… or someone."
Castian's stomach turned at those words. He felt the invisible weight he carried grow even more oppressive.
"Calling to something?" Castian repeated, trying to grasp what that could mean. "What do you mean by that?"
Xun looked at him, his expression grave.
"Every fragment of power in the world carries a signature. This Pearl is emitting its own, like a beacon in the darkness. Any being who understands what it is, or desires to control it, can sense it. And, Castian, I fear it has already drawn the attention of dangerous forces."
The words hung in the air like distant thunder, making Kaelen furrow his brow and sending a chill down Castian’s spine.
"Is that why the attacks started in the village?" Castian asked, his eyes wide. "Were they after the Pearl?"
Xun nodded slowly.
"It’s likely. But those attackers may not be the only ones. If my suspicions are correct, there are others who now sense its presence. Some may be far more dangerous than the raiders you faced."
"So what do I do?" Castian asked, his tone desperate. "I can’t just get rid of it, can I?"
Xun shook his head, his face serious.
"No, discarding it is not an option. Even if you abandoned it, it would still carry your energy, your connection. The Pearl has chosen you, in a sense, and now your lives are intertwined. But there are ways to control its power and conceal its presence… for now."
Kaelen, who had been listening attentively, interjected.
"Master, do you think he should stay here? Wouldn’t it be safer to take him somewhere remote?"
Xun considered the question for a moment before answering.
"Remote or not, he will eventually be found. The key is not to run but to prepare. Castian needs shelter, yes, but also training. He is not just the bearer of the Pearl; he is its guardian. And to be a guardian, he must become stronger, wiser, and more resilient."
Castian ran his hands through his hair, exasperated.
"So I’m a walking target now? Great. As if I didn’t already have enough problems."
Xun rose slowly, his presence seeming to fill the small cabin.
"The question is not what you are now, but what you can become. Destiny has chosen you, Castian. That cannot be changed. What you can change is how you face that destiny."
Xun’s words echoed in Castian’s mind as he sat in silence, staring at the Pearl. He didn’t know if he was ready to accept the weight of being a guardian, but he knew he had no other choice.
After a moment, Xun broke the silence.
"I will teach you how to protect your mind and spirit, how to channel the Pearl’s power without being consumed by it. But it will take time, and time is something we do not have in abundance."
Kaelen intervened again, his voice soft.
"Then he should stay here with us. The cabin is isolated and far from the main trails. And with the two of us by his side, perhaps we can buy enough time to prepare him."
Xun nodded, though his expression remained grim.
"It’s a temporary solution, but it might work. Still, we must be cautious. Those seeking the Pearl may not take long to find him."
Castian felt an even greater weight on his shoulders, but at the same time, a spark of determination began to grow within him. He knew the path ahead would be difficult and dangerous, but for the first time, he felt he wasn’t alone.
The following days were filled with an exhausting routine. Xun began teaching Castian how to meditate, something the young man initially found useless but soon realized was essential.
"The Pearl’s power is not just physical," Xun explained as Castian struggled, frustrated, to keep his mind quiet. "It connects to you through your mind and emotions. If you don’t learn to control those aspects, you’ll be controlled by them."
Kaelen, meanwhile, began training Castian in weapon handling, forcing him to perfect his technique through repeated movements until they became instinctive.
"You fight with anger," Kaelen said during one session, correcting Castian’s stance. "That might give you strength in the short term, but it will leave you vulnerable in the long run. Learn to fight with focus, not emotion."
Though exhausted at the end of each day, Castian felt increasingly confident. He still feared what lay ahead, but he was starting to believe he could face the challenges waiting for him.
One evening, as the fire in the cabin cast dancing shadows on the walls, Xun sat beside Castian and looked directly at him.
"There’s something you need to understand, Castian," he said, his voice low and somber. "The Pearl’s power doesn’t just attract danger from outside. It can also corrupt you from within if you’re not careful."
Castian frowned, surprised.
"Corrupt me?"
Xun nodded.
"Absolute power comes at a cost. It can amplify your emotions, your desires, even your fears. If you give in to it, you won’t be yourself anymore. You’ll just be an extension of the Pearl’s will."
Xun’s warning struck deep within Castian, who couldn’t help but think of the times he felt the Pearl pulsing inside him, as if it had a life of its own.
"So how do I control it?"
"With patience, discipline, and a pure heart," Xun replied. "And with the understanding that true power doesn’t come from strength, but from balance."
Castian nodded slowly, determined to follow the path Xun and Kaelen were laying out for him. He knew danger still lurked, but for the first time, he felt that he might be able to face it—and triumph.
