Chapter 41
The rising sun painted the sky in golden and orange hues, bathing the isolated mountains in a soft light. Morning mist still embraced the surrounding forest, while the wind whispered through the trees, carrying the scent of damp wood and herbs Kaelen had hung to dry the previous night. Castian slowly opened his eyes, feeling the morning chill seep through his skin despite the blankets covering him. His muscles ached with every small movement, a cruel reminder of recent injuries and the battle that had brought him to the brink of death. For a moment, he simply lay there, listening to the rhythmic sound of wind chimes outside the cabin, trying to find some peace in the new day. As he tried to sit up, he noticed Kaelen seated in meditation beside the extinguished fire, his eyes closed and hands resting on his knees. Castian admired the old hermit's serenity, but something made him frown. There was another presence in the cabin. Leaning against the opposite wall was a man Castian had never seen before. Tall, lean, and with an upright posture, he emanated an aura of authority and mystery. His graying hair was tied in a simple bun, and his deep, penetrating eyes seemed to carry the weight of ages. The white robe he wore was made of coarse linen, but the simplicity of his attire was deceiving. Every movement he made was deliberate, as if he was always aware of the space around him. Castian tried to sit up fully despite the pain, and the mysterious figure turned to face him. The man’s gaze met Castian’s, assessing him with an intensity that made the young warrior shiver. "You're finally awake," said the man in a deep yet serene voice. It sounded like the echo of distant thunder, carrying an imposing calm. "It’s good to see that this young spirit hasn’t given in." "He’s resilient, Master Xun," replied Kaelen, opening his eyes and standing with surprising ease for someone his age. He grabbed a damp cloth from a clay bowl and handed it to Castian. "But he’ll need more than strength to survive what lies ahead." "Master Xun?" Castian asked, glancing between the two men, his tone filled with uncertainty. "Who is he?" Master Xun tilted his head slightly, a gesture that seemed both a greeting and an acknowledgment of the young man’s doubt. "I’m merely an old man who carries ancient knowledge," Xun replied, his words precise and laden with meaning. He stepped forward, stopping beside Kaelen. "But to you, I will be a guide." Kaelen placed a firm hand on Castian’s shoulder, as if anchoring him to the reality of the situation. "He’s more than that, boy. Master Xun is one of the most skilled warriors ever to walk these mountains. He came because he believes there’s something in you worth preserving." Castian raised an eyebrow, his distrust evident. He pushed the damp cloth away from his face and set it aside, straightening himself a bit more despite the pain. "And why do you believe that?" he asked, his voice tinged with bitterness. "I’m no one. Just someone carrying a burden I never asked for." Master Xun remained silent for a moment, studying Castian with eyes that seemed to see beyond flesh and bone. Then, he slowly sat on a nearby wooden stool, crossing his legs with the grace of someone in absolute control of his body. "It’s true you didn’t choose this path," he began, his voice firm but not harsh. "But the path chose you. It doesn’t matter who you think you are; it matters who you can become." Castian pressed his lips together, looking away toward the wooden floor of the cabin. He felt anger and frustration bubbling within him, but there was something in Xun’s words that unsettled him, as if a part of him knew the man was right. "And what do you know about who I can become?" Castian retorted, lifting his gaze with a flash of defiance. "You’re just a stranger who showed up here." Kaelen sighed at Castian’s words but didn’t intervene. Master Xun, on the other hand, didn’t seem offended. Instead, he smiled faintly, as if he had been expecting that reaction. "You’re right," Xun admitted. "I’m a stranger. But sometimes it takes someone from the outside to see what those trapped in their own pain cannot." The unexpected response left Castian speechless for a moment. He didn’t know how to react. Part of him wanted to continue distrusting the man, but another part was desperate for answers, for direction, for something to make sense of the chaos his life had become. "Then tell me, Master Xun," Castian said with a heavy sigh. "What do you see in me that I can’t?" Xun leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees as he spoke. "I see a spirit that refuses to break, even when it’s on the verge of collapse. I see a heart that bears a heavy burden yet still beats with determination. And I see potential, great potential. But potential without direction is like a flame without fuel—it dies out before fulfilling its purpose." Castian remained silent, absorbing the man’s words. Kaelen finally stepped in, his voice softer than usual. "What Master Xun is trying to say, boy, is that you have a choice. You can keep running, carrying that pearl as a weight dragging you down, or you can learn to use it as the tool it was meant to be." "Use it?" Castian asked, frowning. He instinctively reached for the pocket where the Celestial Pearl was kept. "How could something like this be used? All it’s brought is destruction and pain." Xun shook his head slowly. "That’s because you haven’t yet understood the power you carry. Not all power is a curse, Castian. It’s what you do with it that matters." "And you’re going to teach me that?" Castian asked, still skeptical. "Yes," Xun answered without hesitation. "But teaching is a two-way path. You must be willing to learn." The silence that followed was heavy but not uncomfortable. Castian looked at the extinguished fire, his mind a whirlwind of thoughts. He knew he couldn’t continue as he was. He couldn’t return to the village without answers. He couldn’t run from what was coming. Finally, he lifted his gaze and met Xun’s eyes. "What do I need to do?" A rare and almost imperceptible smile touched Xun’s lips. He rose slowly and looked at Kaelen, who gave a slight nod of approval. "First, you need to relearn the basics. The strength you have now is not enough. You rely too much on brute force and ignore strategy. We’ll start with that." "And after?" Castian asked, raising an eyebrow. "After," Xun replied, picking up a wooden staff leaning against the wall, "we’ll teach you how to turn your burden into a weapon." In the days that followed, Castian began rigorous training under Xun and Kaelen’s guidance. Each day was a test of his patience, endurance, and willpower. Xun was not a gentle master. He demanded discipline and attention to detail, breaking down every one of Castian’s movements to rebuild them with precision and purpose. "Remember, strength without control is like a river overflowing its banks," Xun would say while correcting Castian’s stance during a training session. "It destroys everything around it, including the one trying to wield it." Though the training was exhausting, Castian felt something changing within him. Each movement repeated to exhaustion, each lesson calmly imparted by Xun, seemed to shape not just his body but also his mind. One night, as the three of them sat around the fire, Xun finally revealed a bit more about his connection to the Celestial Pearl. "I saw it once, many years ago," he said, staring into the flames as if seeing something beyond them. "It was in the hands of a man not so different from you, Castian. He too believed it was a curse but learned to use it as an instrument of change." Castian leaned forward, fascinated by the revelation. "What happened to him?" Xun tore his gaze from the fire and met Castian’s eyes. "He saved his village. But the price was high." Those words hung in the air, heavy with meaning. Castian knew the journey ahead would be dangerous, perhaps even fatal. But for the first time, he felt a spark of hope. Perhaps, with Xun’s wisdom and Kaelen’s strength by his side, he could find a way to avenge the destruction of his village and put an end to Feng.
